  • for some reason since i only live a couple hours away i kinda wanna become a creeper and go find him and be in aw (awe? ahh? awwwww?) of actually seeing him..... @_@

  • I learned about Mr. Gage in a book about the brain.

  • My class was learning about Phineas Gage and my teacher showed us this video. It was hilarious!!

I also have a question. Do you live in Indiana?

  • @PaigeMLovesMusic no he lives in montana

  • @PaigeMLovesMusic Hank (him) lives in Missoula, Montana. However, his brother, John (who is the other half of this video blog) does live in Indiana.

  • @PaigeMLovesMusic He lives in Montana

  • AWESOME

  • The anatomy teacher showed this to her class and now it's literally all my nerd-but-not-nerdfighter friends talk about.

  • @CeliaAnnn you did tell them about Nerdfighteria right? :D

  • I am totally showing this to my psych. teacher!

  • I just got a headache... irony is afoot!

  • was very unimpressed with my psych class when I said there was a song about Phineas Gage, no one liked it, or even listened

  • Haha, we had to do a project about Gage in 7th grade for science xD I wish my science teacher had shown us this, I would've actually gotten an A on it :P

  • "Tumble weed just ran over my mac book. I love Montana." Lol.

  • I can't believe I'm rocking out this hard to a song literally about head trauma.

  • @TheWarnerSister Same here. XD

  • I love how Lemon is jsut wandering around in the background.

  • Piano drums and an electric guitar? You can't even hear what he is playing.

  • im studying that in school

  • gross

  • This song is awesome. You sound so good singing this Hank!

  • frontal lobe disinhibition is the real lesson of that case study for clinical psychology, by separating and well... destroying that connection between the frontal lobe and the rest of his brain he was angry and impulsive and unpredictable, like a drunkenness that never ends PG showed how brain injury related to personality changes

  • It's amazing what you can learn from a 4 minute video, or a song for that matter.

  • Totally should audition for American Idol with this song.

  • 64 people . . . . . have disliked this

  • very catchy

  • There was a page about Phineas Gage in my psychology book so I just had to come back to this video :)

  • I just like how Lemon is chilling in the background in part of the video

  • Kind of ironic how the ad to the side is about improving your brain health...

  • 2:26 hey lemon!!!!!

  • Hank, have you not realized that it wasn't a teacup. It was a half Teacup. Big difference.

  • I wonder what Phineas Gage would think of this song...?

  • We watchd this in Psych today. My non-nerdfighter psych teacher found this on accident when she was trying to find stuff about Phineas for our class. :D She was so impressed by how much information was in this song. She gives you props for doing your research, Hank. :D everyone in the class was looking at me funny when I said I was a nerdfighter but they just don't understand.

  • If I wasn't a nerdfighter I would surely write:

I'm in the weird part of youtube again.

  • This was on VeryDemotivational!

  • eating clam chowder while watching this :)

  • can someone tell me what guitar hank uses?

  • I LOVE THIS!

  • Why do you always use the same cords?

  • 2:25 it's lemon!

  • Oh my god, we watched this in psych today, and right away I was like "OH MY GOD, VLOGBROTHERS!"

...it was a shame when everyone looked at me blankly.

  • We talked about Gage too and people who suffered about Gage disorder or syndrome, not sure which one...

so in our book it had a small text about those gage people and it was something like:

"There are lots of Gage in our society. They might look normal people but they're not. They're mental state makes it hard to get along with other people etc etc"

(so, in my language we pronounce Gage and gays very similarly)

  • great song but the best part was "a tumble weed just flew over my macbook. I love Montana!" amen hank. Amen.

  • thank you Hank for this song. I took my final exam in my Neuroscience class today, and while I don't know how I did on the rest of the test, I know I got the questions about Phineas Gage right. I sang this song in my head to find the answers :-) . thank you.

  • A really old video I watched in AP Psych made Phineas Gage look like a bitch.

    This angered me.

I'm sending my teacher this video.

  • Get this of my brain!!

  • You should make a song about phrenology.

  • I was looking through all the vlogbrothers videos and I saw that it said phineas gage: a song and I got so excited that I actually knew who he was that I just had to click on it

  • I sent this video to my neuroethics teacher and he showed it in class! It made my day!

  • I like trains

  • 1,349!

  • 1,348

  • @vanman988 1343rd comment . . . I sense a pattern starting . . .

  • @gymcats319 1344th comment because I just couldn't leave you hanging

  • @jessings333 1345th comment. The pattern must continue.

  • @SideShowHomer 1346 omg this is crazy

  • @crazywilltheoriganal

    FIVE MILLIONTH COMMENT!

  • @thetimelady42 c-c-c-c-combo breaker! to someone with an awesome name. =D

  • We discussed Phineas Gage in AP Psych. I brought up the fact that there was a song about him when conversing with my group.. to which my co-captain replied, "I watch the vlogbrothers!"

    "NERDFIGHTER?!"

The response he gave me was the nerdfighter symbol.

After three lonely years of high school, I found a fellow nerd because Hank wrote a song about Phineas Gage.

  • @spot41414 I met my best friend after forgetting "Will Grayson, Will Grayson" in my English class, I was met the next day by a drawing of a nerdfighter symbol next to my book on the chalkboard. It was the teacher's "Student assistant" and we are now best friends. :)

  • this is a great video it was actually sent to Pandora comedy

  • My Psych teacher told us this story and I raised my hand to ask if he was talking about Phineas Gage. I was the only one to know who it was. :) Thanks Vlogbrothers!!! <3

  • Just went to a lecture about how science has been able to learn from people like Phineas Gage. As soon as his picture came up on screen i had this song going through my mind! There was a great one about a nurse called nancy whose brain was damaged so much that everything she saw became a lichtenstein cartoon x

  • I just realized how disgusting this story actually is. O.O

  • @rachelsaunicorn Your comment was the 1337th comment. dftba.

  • I'm definitely listening to this to study for a Psychology test tomorrow...

  • Yes! I got my psychology teacher to agree to show this!! = D

  • I was the only one in my Psychology class who knew who Phineas Gage was.

And my mother says the internet is a waste of time.

  • @pinjamurai thx to john and hank green i have out smarted my English teacher && my biology teacher

  • We did this in psychology!

    Sending to my teacher. :D

  • We talked about brains in my biology class and the teacher was talking about a story similar to this and I freaked out because I knew all about it and I think I kind of scared my class. I also used this story in an English paper I did last year about what in the brain causes empathy. :)

  • I did this in psychology too :D

  • Comment removed

  • Our teacher played this today. I didn't know it was gonna be a vlogbrothers video so as soon as I saw Hank I loudly yelled "IT'S HANK GREEN!!!!!!!". Everyone looked at me like a freak. I don't care.

  • Transcribe Audio, it is like youtube commenting on the song or a back-up singer.

  • Gotta show this to my psychology class and think I created new nerdfighters.

    WIN!

  • My physiology professor talked about Phineas Gage today, and I have been waiting all day to come home to watch this video. :D Thanks, Hank, for writing a Phineas Gage song! :)

  • I had to track this down again because in my biology class on Friday my teacher played a video on the brain and different things that can happen to it, and Mr. Phineas Gage was mentioned and I got all happy and it took everything in me to not squeal out 'Hey! Hank taught me that!' Yeah, I was getting weird looks from my lab partner, and I was thinking 'it's okay, I'm a nerd. Live with it. It's pretty sad when a good portion of your knowledge was gained via youtube videos. :S

  • holy lot of comments 133 pages

  • Watching this to procrastinate/help with my philosophy homework, but then almost clicked onto a giraffe sex video, which is most certainly procrastination only.

  • My psychology teacher showed our class this wonderful song ahahah

  • The dirty lens works well with the song really

  • i could listen to this song all day. oh wait i did.

  • It was half a teacup..

  • i sing this as if i hear i hear it every day on the radio

  • this dude left me no choice, but to take 4 minutes off my cramming time for tomorrow's psych100 midterm..gd1

  • THIS is how they should teach us about Phineas Gage in psychology class. They should just play this song.

  • We talked about Phineas Gage in my Psychology class today.

  • I felt really smart in psychology class because I already knew all about Phineas Gage!!! Thank you Hank Green!

  • @alwaysshoutmaybe Awesome! In my psychology class we discussed Phineas Gage... I also felt really smart. :D

  • How about a song about Nicolas Cage? Similar names.

  • We talked about Phineas Gage in school today! Well, actually we were talking about things impaling your skull and one kid said, "Well I read a story once about a guy who worked on a railroad and got a pole shoot through his head" and my friend next to me went, "OH OH OH IT'S PHINEAS GAGE!" Then we started freaking out and our teacher looked at us like we were crazy. The end.

  • @cupcakestar6 We are going through US History in our english class, the same thing happened to me, just that I was the one that was having A nerdfighter awesomeness-fit xD

  • I wonder what Phineas Gage would say if he knew there was a song about him???

  • i love this song!

  • this is my favorite song of his.

  • my favourite song on the new album XD

  • It's funny... cuz I'll always imagine Hank as Phineas.

    LOL.

  • Im showing this to my science teacher...or my dad (he's a science teacher)

  • "A tumbleweed just went over my MacBook. I love Montana!" That should either be the state's new slogan or a t-shirt.

  • My aunt is singing along.

    So proud. SO. PROUD.

  • My Psychology friends didn't believe me that there was a song about Phineas Gage.

  • i read about this guy, it was a very interesting book.

  • there was a pop-up add on the screen, and it was for a "baby's brain damage"

  • 2:25 Zitchdog!

  • PUFF LEVELS ARE HIGH

  • I am a fairly recent vlogbrothers subscriber. I bought Ellen Hardcastle and this is my favourite song. This song deserves my more views! I've always been fascinated by Gage and I couldn't believe it when I realised someone actually did an awesome song about it! It's becoming more and more obvious that Hank and John never, ever forget to be awesome.

  • haha, this is great (: though..technically he wasn't stabbed >.<

  • Guitar hero: Hank Green. someone wake me up when they make it

  • It amazes me that you made this song using three chords

  • @rotnakleugim Trust me, there are so many songs with only three chords.

  • epic

  • I love when Hipster Hank sings awesomely nerdy songs while wearing a hipster hat and walks around empty, deserted train tracks.

  • i know that guy! they told us at climbing class to wear our helmets over our farheads lest out frontal lobe turn to clam chowder in a fall and we end up like phineas gage

  • we were shown the other phineas gage video 'cause we were learning about him in science. after we saw it, my level of respect for my teacher shot through the roof.

  • O.o Don't trip on the railroad tracks!~ XD

  • Anyone else notice the sneaky laptop at 3:15?

  • Glad he didn't get hit by a train.

  • Wow, this video tought me a lot!!

  • hot <3

  • brain over brawn explained: you can live without huge muscles: you can't live without big brain!

  • Should have been "Never go home the same", not "again", rhymes better, and 'again' isn't true, because if it was, this song would be very boring.

  • @lysolcoke2HD Haha!

Nerds: Making lyrics better since time began.

  • This is honestly my favorite song of Hank's.

  • This is one of my favorite Hank songs and music videos. It also marks the day I started regularly watching Vlogbrothers!!!

  • @TheWarnerSister

    Same here....

  • My english teacher had a book about Phineas Gage and I nerded out and grebbed it as fast as i could so i would get it before anyone else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2:23 Inexplicable Lemon!

  • The sky at 2:54 is so picturesque!

  • This is definitely one of my top three favorite Hank songs ever.

  • I love Hank, The Katherine, and Lemon :)

  • . He recently has been creating episodes for an online You-tube series called Assassins Creed Brotherhood 2.0. in which he is incredibly good at entertaining his viewers, and extremely poor at actually playing the game

    wikipedia fails so hard

  • 3:51 Hi Katherine. :)

  • Lemon :D

  • 2:23 Hi Lemon!

  • "A tumbleweed just blew across my MacBook! I love Montana!"

Haha, and we love you Hank.

  • It seems that the wikipedia page on hanks songs have multiple key phrases that match...

  • I miss Phineas Gage like a hole in the head :(

  • "That was more than he could explain."

    O'reilly?

  • I'm so glad this song exists. I need to study this for psychology and this is insanely helpful. Hank decreases world suck and suck levels in my grades.

  • WRONG!

  • Hey it's Lemon!

  • This song really helped me with my psychology revision!

  • 63 People love railroad accidents.

  • I love Lemon! :D (S)he reminds me of my dog. :)

  • O need the lyrics to this

  • Watching this totally counts as biology revision... :D

  • I'm afraid I always find Hank hot, but I like tall, lanky nerdy guys. Like my husband :)

  • we learned about phineas today in linguistics, since he didnt his ability to make sentances or recognise language. I think thats pretty cool

  • I had to write a news paper, supposed to be in 1848 after the accident, and I made you an eye witness[:

  • Brilliant! One of the best songs about a true-to-life event since Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"!

  • singamajig solo for the tetris song

  • Gregor Braci.

  • I got my psychology teacher to play this for my class when we were learning about him. :D I helped me find another nerdfighter in my class

  • PLEASE WRITE A SONG WITH SINGAMAJIGS!!!!! That would be one step up from the party blowers.

  • My friends were talking about how the brain affects the human body and I used Phineas Gage as an example of what one can survive without. My only problem was I kept starting to sing the story.

  • @SaukaKumagae I wouldn't call it surviving. after the accident Gage lost literally all ability to feel emotion and with that loss he was no longer able to function. without emotion he didn't even have the drive to feed himself and would have actually lain down and died without care and attention. the human brain is full of way too much awesome!

  • @hardcorehunter1 I would still say he survived, but I understand it wasn't much of a life afterwards. Regardless of the damage it did to him as a person, the fact that his body could function without large portions of his brain is still a good example of what one can survive without. Yes, indeed the brain is full of awesome.

  • @SaukaKumagae Very well. I accept your definition of survive and am now even more amazed by the incredible durability of the human body. It's almost as awesome as being a Nerdfighter is it not?

  • @SaukaKumagae lol the same thing happened to me

  • I felt so smart when we talked about Phineas Gage in my Psychology class and i already had some knowledge about him. Oh how i love nerdfighteria <3 <3

  • i like the dog just chilling behind him half way through

  • why did you have to write it out of ballad format! I need to have a ballad for a school project!

  • where can i buy this song?!

  • My teacher is going to show this to every 8th grade class she has after I recommended this to her. Thank you Hank. DFTBA.

  • I learned about Phineas Gage today in psych. Thank you Hank for providing me with knowledge before class.

  • Hank, you still need to tell John whether he can be your singamajig player!!!!

  • WHY WAS THIS NEVER IN MY SUBSCRIPTION BOX

    >:C

  • i have a what if for all of the smart(er) nerdfighters out there. what if, because information can me sent and held inside energy is it possible that our emotional make up can just be perpetually housed in the energy in our brain? and the processors for things like emotional control and how to act like a sane person and housed inside the brain tissue? and because people with brain problems can end up forgetting memories and not usually talents, could those things be related?
