Thorpe is probably the better technical freestyler. However Phelps is the better technical swimmer. Under water butterfly kick is the most beneficial skill in swimming, by far! Its just the fact that you can move so fast under water with little resistance and less effort. The only thing I find difficult with using dolphin kick is having to hold your breath for so long. How Phelps can do it, I don't know. The man is a fucking machine!

Thorpe at his best was the greatest 400m freestyle swimmer ever. However the full body suit he wore to break those records will also be banned from next year. Mens suits from Jan 1st 2010 will be no higher than the waist and no lower than the knee.

In my opinion, the absence of Ian Thorpe did much for Phelps' morale. Knowing that you're the fastest swimmer in a race is great for your morale, and tends to make you swim a bit faster. I also believe that if Thorpe continued his training, he would have beaten Phelps at Beijing.

The only reason phelps can swim so fast is his body. His body is THE STEREOTYPE of the "perfect swimming body." People like Lochte and Lezak are downplayed because of Michael Phelps The only reason they don't destroy Phelps in the pool is because they don't have his body. Most swimmers can identify with what I write. I'm not saying that he doesn't work as hard; he just gets a huge hand from his body. Of course that is part of the reason, but there are many people on the pro circuit with a bigger wingspan and taller than Phelps. He doesn't have the inbred muscle or strength or technique. He practices day after day to get where he is, and deserves to be there. Don't downplay his effort.

Phelps is indeed lucky; he has definately some form of physical advantage. And yes, it is possible that someone, who trains the exact same program as Phelps, without his natural gifts might not achieve as much. However, that is irrelevent to whether Phelps deserves his success or not. Fact is, Phelps trained extremely hard and maximised on any advantage he had. Body or no body, no one can achieve what he had without hard work. If he worked hard, he deserved it; simple as that. It isn't ONLY luck
