I remember when I was about 14 I was helping my mom go through a bunch of her albums and she was telling me which ones meant a lot to her, she handed me this one and had me put it on the turntable on our huge wooden stereo. As this song played, tears began streaming down my face and I couldn't speak for a few minutes..I'd never heard it before and Johnny's voice literally broke my impressionable heart... she looked at me and said, "see? now you know why I'll never get rid of this one..."
I asked my 2 daughters what they knew about Johnny Mathis and they said :isn't he the one that sings that song from that movie "Play Misty for Me",so I told them to go to youtube and listen to some of his older recordings, they were shocked to hear that he had that kind of range and song interpretation, and my youngest said she felt like he had neglected her love life by not acknowledging him sooner, now she's hooked
My friends and I at 16 years old, would sit and listen and cry to the unbearably beautiful sounds of Johnny Mathis. I first saw him in person when he appeared with Henry Mancini and it was one magical evening. Saw him for the fifth time last year and was still mesmerized by the God given talent of this incredible man.
@SEPTEMBERANCH I won't be rude and ask in which year you were 16. I will say that it's pretty extraordinary for a teen to catch on to Johnny. When you saw the Mathis/Mancini show, you also saw my dad as pianist and conductor. Gotta brag, can't help it. :) I am SO SO happy that he is so strongly appreciated in these days of hip-hop, bling, and digital music. RoJon (his production company - his full name is John Royce Mathis) forever!
He is the greatest. No one today can touch him. We were lucky to grow-up with this beautiful man and his marvelous voice. Will love JM forever. God Bless John
I was a very young man when I saw this man walk down the steps of the Rex Hotel in Sydney Australia. Black men were exotic in Australia at the time and I thought that he was the most beautiful man that I had ever seen. I will always regret that u never had the courage to just walk up to him and tell him so. Believe me folks he was more than beautiful, whatever that is!
IN RESPONSE TO COMMENT 7 MOS AGO. I AM SO SORRY YOU WERE DISAPPOINTED IN THAT CONCERT. I HAVE HAD THE HONOR OF SEEING HIM IN PERSON ONLY 3 TIMES, AND MANY MORE SHARED ON YOU TUBE BY HIS DEVOTEES. THE MEDLEY PORTION OF ANY PERFORMANCE IS SOMETHING THAT I CHERISH. ITS HIS WAY OF HOPING TO HIT ON TUNES THAT THE AUDIENCE WILL ENJOY EVEN IN PART. I WILL BE SEEING HIM IN CLEVELAND THIS APRIL 1 AND WILL BE THRILLED WITH ALL HE SHARES. THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER JOHN MATHIS. WE ARE BLESSED
Love this - he is one of my faves singing one of my all-time favorites. When I was 10 years old I told my family I was going to have him sing at my wedding!
Johnny is comming to a theare near me. $126 plus tax and handling. $300 plus for 2 tickets. That's the cheap seats.Riduculas(sp)! I saw him in the late 70's and he was in the round. He didn't sing any song completely. He sang a medley of a lot of his songs. I was VERY dissappointed. I hope that this concert is better. I do love his music and would pay anything to see him.
@charlibing i agree with you completely, it was Linda's version. that i first heard this beautiful song from. then , when i heard it from johnny i was moved to tears, love Irving Berlin, all is music, move me, thx. i also love Cole porter,
Thanks, first, to Mr Berlin for his vision. Thank you to Johnny for making this one his own. One of my favorites and I'm only 40. To all the the Hopeless Romantics out there Happy Valentines Day.... Red Rooster...
jazzsynger, The pianist is Johnny's Conductor/Pianist, from 1974-78, Jim Barnett. He says his first "break:" came in February, 1972, when he was asked to fill in, for Johnny's pianist.
Que voz celestial! Que interpretação! Quanta emoção! Johnny (maravilhoso) Mathis. Deus o conserve assim para nosso deleite. Obrigada 19rebel57 por nos proporcionar estes momentos. jesus o abençoe.
Mr. Mathais has a very nice Voice I was wondering If anyone has What'll I Do with Al Jolson singing it. I could Imagine Asa singing this one. B Arthur's Verison is very Beautiful too.
I love this performance, for the simple fact that it shows that nothing phases a legendary singer like Johnny Mathis. Im not sure it can be noticed in this clip, but when Johnny is looking at the pianist at the start of the song, he is actually asking him for the first line of the lyric. He forgot the lyrics, lol. But as the consumate professional, he gets the line and continues as if nothing happened. The end result a beautifully delivered song.
News Flash!...............Johnny will have 5 lps now on CD June 9th!....Up UP & Away..Rapture..Romantically....and if you want to know the others..contact me!!.......lol
@africanzion Yes, he is wonderful, wonderful. Blessed to have seen him perform just last night. He'll be 76 on Sept. 30... and he sounds great. He touches my heart.
SPECTACULAR!!! Thank you 19rebel57 for another amazing video of our "Star". The sound and picture are great. I feel like he is in my room. Wish he was : ).
Beautiful! Just Johnny and a piano, with his wonderful voice that is all he needs to accompany him. And haven't we all been in the situation where 'What'll I Do?' sums our feelings up perfectly? Thanks 19rebel57.
Mr. Mathis has again made my day happier through this clear and perfect video. Thank you for your work of love, 19rebel57. I am very grateful to have lived in his life time and to enjoy this quiet, charming, and down-to-earth man. His voice will always have a special place in my heart.
I did some research on this song, the great composer Irvin Berlin wrote this for his mother after she died. To me the words are sad yet they tell a meaningful story about loss and grief over that loss. I've heard this sung by many singers but only Johnny sings it the right way, thanks for the upload
WOW!!!. what a style to sing!!! Absolutely marvelous!!! Nobody can do it the way Johnny Mathis do!!!. I want to show my admiration for him and thank you 19rebel57 for give us such a treasure!!
Oh My, Oh My, what a beautiful new video shared by 19rebel57, as always. The quality of your videos just get better and better, they're the REAL deal and I am so happy that you are sharing these with us. Please keep them coming, they always rate the 5 stars that I'm leaving. Thank you again.

He still has the most beautiful voice and breath control. I have actually worn out 2 of his Christmas albums. The ones he recorded with Percy Faith.
