I just love this show so much, I remember watching this show when i was living on the farm in Canton, South Dakota, and also in my kindergarten class too, I remember my kindergarten classmates and I would sit down on the floor, and our kindergarten teacher would turn the tv on, and she would explain each letter to us, I hope i'll get my two nieces to watch this show and other old PBS shows too, sh that They'll enjoy them, like I have before them. I wish PBS would Show Old Skool Shows On TV.
As a kid, I never noticed how primative (and somewhat scary) the Letter People puppets looked, nor did I notice that the puppeteers were somewhat unskilled. I wonder whatever happened to those puppets. Incidentally, at least one of the puppeteers (Allan Trautman) went on to work with the Muppets for some time.
I remember watching every episode starting in Kindergarden... To look at them know, brings back awesome memories and wonder if some of these didnt scare the heck out of me.... They seem kinda creepy now.. But at 6 years old they were cool.
I grew up and currently live in Chicago and we had this curriculum at my CPS school. The teacher would hide one of the letter people dolls before class each week and we had to find it. Man I used to live hunting for them. Then we would listen to the letter's song. All week we would focus on and do activities around that one letter person. What a great way to learn letters and their sounds. I still have very fond memories of learning my letters.
OMG!!! What a flashback! I've been looking for footage of The Letter People for soooo long. I started wondering if I had made them up because no one I know remembered them, even when I sang the song. Lol. This video just made my day... Thank you for posting, and remembering!
@BeautyMarqTV You are not the only one. I went through the exact same thing! Nobody remembered the letter people. I moved to minnesota as a kid, so nobody here knows anything about the letter people. But even my old friends and relatives in St. Louis did not remember them either. But I never forgot! When I went to preschool I already knew my letters because of this show!
Today, apropos of nothing, I started babbling to my husband about this show I'd watched when I was a kid, and how the characters used to come visit me in my kindergarten class. He thought I was making the whole thing up. God bless YouTube. Thank you for archiving these episodes!
The new Letter People have official Facebook and Twitter pages, for those of you who weren't aware. Their Facebook page has posted a few links linking to articles involving the original Letter People. There are also a couple Facebook pages for
separate Letter People, including Ms. W (Wonderful Words) and Mr. R (Rainbow Ribbons)
one of the teachers at the school where my mom taught had inflatable versions of ALL the Letter People.....dunno if she still has them though, but she had them up for YEARS until she retired
I used to hug all the Zanny blow'y up letter people when I came into the classroom every day and kiss them too! I thought they came to life at night and my fave was Mr. M cuz he had all those teeth LOL but I want them back, I'd love them today just as much as I did back then!
wow, I wish this and other old pbs shows was still on the air, i have two nieces, and i wish that this and other old pbs shows was still on the air, so that they'll experience this show and the charicters, like i have before them.
I recently noticed that KETC's website (on their timeline page) states that The Letter People TV Show started in 1972...This is not true, the show began airing in 1974 and the last new episode was produced in 1976. It was the classroom program which began in 1972.
Well there was one particular show that I remembered watching as a kid. All I can think of was that the character was a puppet of some sort, kinda like a sesame street puppet. And KETC produced that.
@zatchHBK85 I think KETC might have produced "Let's Celebrate" (I think that's what it was called) where a blonde woman taught her puppet cat (named Doodle) about holidays.
@thenorris2 I doubt it...Contacting KETC about The Letter People is pointless, they direct you to Abrams & Co. the current owners of the classroom program - who cannot provide any information about the TV Program since they were not involved in its production.
OMG! I didn't realize that the Letter People were a mostly St. Louis thing! That's why I couldn't ever find anything relating to the TV show before! Thank you so much for this! I've missed the Letter People for years! No matter how cheesy, it takes me back to watching PBS every morning! :)
@Lilnib The show started as a local show in St. Louis, but was quickly syndicated across the country on other PBS stations, so it wasn't just a St. Louis thing, but still not every TV market carried it.
Hi, thanks for uploading these videos! Do you have any shots of the charging bull that used to come out on the show? I can't remember what it charged for, and whenever I try to explain it to people I get a blank look! :)
@MIKECNW I grew up in Chicago too... I do NOT remember seeing this at all. I grew up in the 70s and this was nowhere to be seen as far as I can remember. Either that, or it creeped the hell outta me and I changed the channel and don't remember. lol
When I was in kindergarten our teacher gave us letter people coloring pages and I still have all of the letter people. Memories of my early childhood. Thank you.
This is incredible. Do you know if there are DVDs of the Letter People? That would be a great find.
(Actually, looking back at some of the episodes, the puppets are kind of scary, the sets and original opening theme song are gloomy) With that said, at the time they aired, I really enjoyed the episodes.
Thank you for sharing the cartoon intro! So great to see and hear that again. Very informative introductory video, Nick. I'm surprised by how much of this I remember. Thanks!
man, i still remember watching this in my kindergarten in canton, south dakota, and i still remember our kindergarten teacher explaining each letter to us.
Could you maybe put up just the letter people theme song? I know it's really short, but I wanted to show it to a friend without giving her all the other information. ^^
I could not stand this show. It made me so mad in Kindergarten.
My mom reminded me recently that I came home one day from Kindergarten and asked how my day was and I said, "Horrible. We watched the STUPID letter people", hahahaha I must have really not liked it!
I loved The Letter People in Kindergarten back in 1978 and now my daughter is loving them in her Kindergarten class. I'm so glad the teacher is using them, everything else is taught so differently these days. My daughter would like to add that'" Mr. L is lemon lollipops, just so you know. Thank you." Oh, to be 5 again.
That wa really GREAT!! Thanks again EVER so very much for posting this! BTW, did the show, by any chance, have any simularities with the original version of the show The Electric Company?
god i remember this show, I remember watching this at my farmhouse and In my Kindergarten class in Canton, SD. I also remember my kindergarten teacher explained each of the letters to us. god i miss this show.
Thank you for posting this... diddo it does bring back fond memories... I Always Remember'd Mr T... the Original Mr T the one w/out the Gold neclaces.. but with HUGE TEETH :0)
Do you remember where you read that information? I've contacted KETC and they've directed me to the new owners for more information. But the website provided little information. We all know how eager they were to replace and "edit" the original characters. Currently awaiting response from them.
Wow seeing this sure reminds me of my pre kindergarden days at the nursery. I never saw the shows but i remember that the teachers at my childhood day care center use to intorrduce to us a new letter like every day. There was a letter people box filled with blowup dolls of all the letter people. They would also play cassette tapes of thier songs. I can't believe this video made me remember 1984 like it was yesterday. Thank you for the great flashback.
Wow!! Awsome! That was the best profile I've ever seen! I wonder if Jim Henson and his kids ever saw the letter people tv show. Anyway, thanks ever so very much for posting this! I absolutely, definately, positively loved it! = ) BTW, I was wondering, was that you narrating this profile?
At least one of the puppeteers on "The Letter People" did go on to do work for the Henson company...so who knows? I always called the Letter People the "Not Ready for a Henson Production Players". :)
Took me awhile to find this...started with "electric company" and finally found this...this is the show that I always wanted to watch but found slightly (or more) disturbing. The teeth--the excess teeth are just scarry on Ms. A. Sort of like a car wreck--you can't help but look. Wow, what a trip back in time.
I loved this show as a kid! they're not creepy and if you think so.....you're just a wuss. I still remember the the theme song word for word. Letter People!!! make your sounds catch!!!!
I grew up in Toronto and remember this show, but only vaguely. Whenever I mentioned it as my favorite show growing up people never knew what I was talking about. Now that I see it as an adult, it really does look rather creepy and scary...I don't think I'd like to watch it now! Who woulda thought it was on until into the 90s! I grew up in St. Louis and remember watching the old series. I also remember trying to describe it to people who didn't grow up in the area and was often told "sounds creepy". Now that I see some of these clips, I think they're right.
Very well done, but I need to admit; this show used to creep the crap outa me when I was a kid. Especially the intro. The sets were so dark and menacing compared to Sesame Street.
i remember the dolls that blow up (letter people huggables) from kindergarten and they used to have cartoon like slide shows they would play for us....(you know, the cassette goes beep and they flip the projector to the next slide) anyway i never remembered this show tho.
this show was a big reason why i learned to read and understand sentences at such a young age. i will always remember the letter people! Miss A is the best!
I have been wishing for Letter People on DVD! I want them for my kids someday. My girlfriend has never heard of the show, and I can't wait to share this with her! I watched Letter People in kindergarten and first grade. That was how kids learned phonics, spelling, and reading back then!!!
THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THIS OUT THERE FOR KIDS TODAY! Children's shows these days can't begin to compare!
im happy to know im not the only one that thinks about and remebers the letter people i thought i was the only one people dont believe me that they exist. i want to use these to teach my nieces and nephwes to learn the alphabet
Thank you for this video! It's been such a long time since watching this series in elementary school during the early 80's. Letter People did a great job helping us learn basic phonics. I can still remember some of the more catchy tunes, and it's nearly 30 years later! :o)
I used to watch it I think in before going to Kindergarten and then when I got to school we sat around in a big circle and all the inflatable letter people were up on shelves for me to see them. Each week on I think Tuesday a different one would come down and be the focal point. Also if you looked up on those billboard things above the chalk board accross it from a - z would be all the letter people. I always remember being distracted by them, A achew!
on top of this anybody remember todays special i think it came on after the letter people oh we people from the crazy 80's grew up watching totally insane shit! its amazing we learned anything at all
I used to watch this show religiously as a Kindergartener. Our teacher showed it to us and I was hooked. My parents found it on TV and taped almost every episode. Oh the memories.
I remember when I was a kid, I could only watch The Letter People when I had special days home from school. Either on teacher workdays or when I was sick. Thankfully, I got home schooled for two years and I finally got to see all 60 episodes. That was a blessing. :) And years later, I was able to get all the episodes on videos from an internet auction which was another blessing. :) Yes, I love the Letter People. Especially Mr. S, Mr. V, Mr. N and Mr. R
I let my three year niece listen to the Letter People songs. She loved it! Especially Miss A's Ahcoo song. She always loves singing it and doesn't stop listening to the Letter People songs. :)
I have tried to explain Letter People to my friends. I have been accused of making this up more than once. This will definitely help me prove my point!
Wasn't the Silly Bull a segment on the Letter People? He ran head first into bigger words to cut them into syllables didn't he? And then he would crack up afterward.
awesome! i remember watching this show as a little kid and keeping a checklist of the letters to make sure i watched all of them. thanks for posting all of these clips!
I remember this as a kid. It was something that stuck.

i remember the dolls that blow up (letter people huggables) from kindergarten and they used to have cartoon like slide shows they would play for us....(you know, the cassette goes beep and they flip the projector to the next slide) anyway i never remembered this show tho.

I am so freaked out by that song...the 2nd one, "cpme and meet the Letter People..." I feel like I'm home sick from school in first grade.

LOVED IT...such a special memory from 1st grade in 1976. We all adored this program. Miss those days, big time.

S, Mr. V, Mr. N and Mr. R

Excellent montage! Sesame Street had some memorable songs, but rarely were they as fun as the Letter People's.
It's amazing how great a show can be despite not being big-dollar or associated with a famous name. ...such as "Henson."

Great Tv show with one of the best theme songs ever! If you were a kid growing up in St Louis in the 1970s you knew the lyrics by heart!

Wasn't the Silly Bull a segment on the Letter People? He ran head first into bigger words to cut them into syllables didn't he? And then he would crack up afterward.
