@gadjet567 long story short; Megatron is effectively dead to make room for Galvatron, and Optimus died so they could essentially make a 'new' Optimus in Rodimus--sell as many Rodimus toys as Optimus did (not to mention you've got Hot Rod AND Rodimus), and then you've got the option to re-release Optimus later, either as a "returned from the dead with a new powerful form" type thing, or just a "hey, remember that guy? He was cool". sort of thing.
I've got to say, the scenes where Unicron completely dominates Megatron have a lot of power to them. After all, Megatron is a Saturday morning cartoon villain; by the time of this film, he'd been crushed on 65 consecutive occasions. Yet he has never given up; never bent; he's always back with a new crazy scheme to turn babies into energon. To be so utterly beaten by Unicron... well, it says a lot.
@Gadjet567 They were both popular, but they'd been around for two years by then and weren't on most shelves anymore. Megatron takes on a completely different form anyway, effectively dying for toy purposes. By contrast, Bumblebee was still on shelves, being small and cheap, so he makes it out alive. Soundwave makes it out too, because while he's old, he has cassettes and therefore more potential toys. But the Seekers, Insecticons, and most of the original Autobot cars, being old, die.
Does anyone ever notice? From Season 1 at least through here, it seems like the Autobots avoid everything from weather-induced traffic accidents to Decepticon missile fire by inverting polarities! What the heck is a polarity inverter, and how does it work - particularly without mucking up their own internal systems?
@AutobotNutcase ever seen doctor who? John Pertwee as the doctor inverted the polarity of the nuetron flow alot, it actually does nothing but sounds so scientific people accept it.

Can you point me toward a few, please? It's so funny to see something from the Doctor show up in TF, and vice versa - I recently found a comic in my "Transformers" collection featuring a rampaging Decepticon who kept shouting "Allons-y!" (I about split a gut laughing! Thanks, Tenth Doctor!)

Not to knock the theatrical release, but as you mentioned about the Japanese trailer, which I have a copy of, much of the footage that appeared in the J-trailer should have been in the movie. It would have raised the battle for Autobot City to better heights.
yes i know that but it was actually proven in the storyboard (transformers the movie 1986 anniversary edition) that it was smokescreen who was dead just miscouloured so was the headless body of Windcharger (which Arcee was dragging) you can also distinctively see Wheeljack fighting Devastator later on.
Here is how I view the whole Transformers thing. The lines in the 2007 and 2009 movies suck. However, it was due to a combination of shitty writers, the greedy bastards that worked for Michael Bay, Hasbro, Takara, and whiny ass Generation 1 OCD types that love to fucking complain about the movie yet lack the damn balls to make a better one themselves or to kick the shit out of Bay et al and that say the only true Transformers is from the Generation 1 era. This cartoon movie could fit as a sequel to revenge of the fallen! The dinobots will be introduced, but i dunno if devastator and arcee could fit in movie 3!

Excellent movie but it seems that Ultra Magnus, Hot rod, Kupp, Springer and Arcee just came out of nowhere.
They didn't appear in any of the episodes before the movie.

Actually, they probably made him like Han Solo on purpose. Notice R.C.'s head is similar to Princess Leah, and Hot Rod practicing with the light saber. Plus about a million other nods to Star Wars.
