  • Can anybody tells me the basic differences between lao ja and xin ja?

From the videos on Youtube, it seems to be much ado about nothing.

  • The difference is simple: Lao Jia Yi Lu has the structure of 75 movements, defined be Chen Changxing, Xin Jia Yi Lu has 83 movements as the the form was revised be Chen Fake. In Beijing the just talk about Yi Lu, but in Chenjiagou the use this terminology to differ the version of Chen Fake from the one of Chen Changxing.

  • jw - is that li shu dong laoshi in the back?

  • It could be, at least he started in the same group with me, as far as I remember.

  • Thanks for your encouragement. Yes, I had the luck to learn from Wang Xian a long time ago. In my country I have no Master so it was a bit difficult the past years to make progress. I hope to continue my studies with him next year.

  • interesting performance of the lao jia yi lu. dao juan hong is a little different than the way I am being taught to do it for the lao jia (my teacher says that way is really part of xin jia). It is always a pleasure to compare the ways the yi lu is being presented thanks

  • Thanks for your comment. I did Lao Jia as i've been taught by my teacher. But as he said, like everybody's handwriting is different, every teacher has his own special way to interpret the movements in traditional Taijiquan. When you see the "4 Buddha Warrior Attendants" demonstrating, they all do it a bit different, but they had all the same teachers.

  • I completely agree. My primary Chen Teacher, Cheng Jincai, is a disciple of Chen Zhoukui, and even his Lao Jia forms have a heavy Xin Jia flavor. It all depends on the practitioners influences. Some say that as long as the principles hold true (eg: using proper chansijing), then ultimately it does not matter so much what the choreogaphy looks like. By the way good performance.

  • Thanks for your opinion. I agree with your statement that principles have to be true. Also thanks for your comment on my performance but I wasn't that happy with it. I was too nervous because just a minute before was Chen Xiaoxing performing and after me it was Chen Zhenglei. I felt so small in that moment :-)

  • Be proud of your work! It's true that these guys are giants in the field and have great reputations, but you were performing WITH them. That says something there already. By the way are you a student of Wang Xi'an?
