Nikon D3100 vs. Canon 1100D, 500D, 550D, Nikon won, but Canon 600D, 60D and other Canon HIGH-END DSLRs are way better than Nikon's. If you have money just enough for a 550D I must say go for Nikon D3100 instead, and buy another lens from the spare money. ;) I now have a Nikon D3100 and aiming for a Canon 60D.

I am saving up money for a DSLR, but I am really unsure: the Canon 550D or the Nikon D3100? Canon sells more lenses and they start off cheaper, and the Canon has a external mic-jack but I am not sure if I am going to use that anyway, but the Nikon is cheaper.. I hope somebody can help me because this video didn't really persuade me to buy either the Canon or the Nikon.

@Ciaokje Go with the 3100, I owned a 550d, and the 3100 has a mode that trains you in photography that kicks ass and takes names!

@Ciaokje If you look beyond this review, 550D is a much better camera than the D3100. I would say go for 550D. It's more bang for the buck.

And like Kai said "If you plan long term, go for 550D". It can even record movies at 60fps (at 720p). Canon's menu system is easier to get used to with and more objective compared to Nikon . Canon has a tougher body in this case.

Canon lenses are less expensive to start with. etc.Nikon is good and so is canon.

Your choice ultimately!!

@WillBarrett5 I guess 500D has been discontinued a long time back. So your choice should be between 550D and D3100. Also 500D did not have many video related features that 550D has. 550D was a big improvement on 500D; so I guess you cannot use this video as a replacement for 500D review.

Go for 550D if you are confused between D3100 and 550D, in my view.

Canon 550D got Magic Lantern, which already makes it 10x better than the Nikon D3100.

Well, maybe not 10x better but without a doubt better.

For those who doesn't know, Magic Lantern is a free hack you can install on your Canon 550D to get hundreds of new amazing and very useful features for both video and picture mode.

Too much to include in one comment but just search it up on google. They update it often with tons of new features. There are no videos covering all the current features.

@Rico0oShredder Well it has its advantages compared to the D3100. - better sensor (the same as the D7000) with 16.2 instead of 14.2 megapixels - flip screen with higher resolution - microphone input - infrared sensors for a ir remote control - ~4 pictures per second instead of ~3 in the burst mode - max. 30 pictures per second in the video mode instead of 24 - bracketing - HDR - various effects like selective color (can also be applied to videos) - mirror lock-up ...

I think it depends on who you are, if you're lazy I would recommend the d3100 because it's lighter in weight and has "pre-set effects" whereas you would have to manually adjust for 550d. I personally chose 550d because it's smaller/thinner, shoots faster and also has a slightly better than d3100, video recording wise.

@eveningniteshade , To be honest I don't really see the differences between the two cameras. They are both pretty ideal for video taking and have the same mp/similar white balance.

The good thing about 600d is that it has a flip out screen which is reallly cool! Haha but I guess at the end of the day, I would choose the 550d still just because it feels thinner/easier to hold for more small hands and it's cheaper by quite a bit :)

@c00kiecream There is lot more to 600D than meets the eye. Like the remote flash comtrol, the movie crop more allowing you to zoom digitally without losing quality, variangle LCD is really useful for vdo as well as stills.

His point is that there's not enough of a difference between these cameras to say that one is the clear winner. And do you live on a remote island? Go to your local camera shop or big store and fool around with the display models one evening. They don't require that you buy them.

entry-level Nikon cameras SUCK mainly due to lack of the AF motor, which limits which lenses you can buy (either nikkor or third-party like tamron or sigma). other than that, who cares. it's a camera with some features. i've had nikon, have canon, but took my best shots with a sony (pre-minolta-buyout)

Basically no one who buys his first DSLR really needs the built-in AF motor, given that there are dozens of lenses (Nikon, Tamron, Sigma, Tokina,...) out there with a built-in motor, it's not really much of a limiting factor.

It pretty much only matters if you already own lenses without a built-in motor.
