  • I think this album has the best big band drumming I've ever heard.

  • I got the original sheet music for this and the title says: Big SCHVIN face.

    Any history to this?

  • @mikasaren Song is spelt as my album has it. Strange about the print since one gentleman says that -Tales of Rhoda Rat should be -Time Out.. Maybe if mistakes were made, I could of asked him for clarification since he was very accessible during the intermission at one of the concerts listed on the inside cover

  • @BH21206 I have a similar copy where some of the parts say "Big Schving Face" on them - the chart's missing the alto solo and the backgrounds behind them, but other than that, it's as recorded. Sierra Music did a full transcription of the chart as it was recorded and is MUCH easier to work with, IMO, than the "Schving" transcription.

  • @BH21206 Actually, I just pulled up my copy of the chart and compared it to the recording. The Sierra version has it as an alto solo, the manuscript version says tenor. The solo break at [D] in the manuscript version says 24 bars when the solo really runs 60. On the 4th chorus, the brass enter with backgrounds that aren't in the manuscript parts. The chart picks back up with the manuscript version at letter [F], if he has the one I think he has.

  • @BH21206 I knew Bill. If it said "Schving Face" then you might be right, but my guess would be that it's Bill's sense of humor. He gave his tunes very unusual names. He also arranged The Jazz Soul of Porgy and Bess, one of the most phenomenal albums ever produced IMO and the musicians he hired reads like "Who's Who" in jazz.

  • @DebbSaxx1 I actually I believe that Big Swing Face is the original chart for the song. Consequently, I believe that Big Schving Face is a transcribed version of the song, as to avoid copyright, I would presume.

  • @WastedMyTimePlaying Thanks for the info. :) I'm sure Bill would get a chuckle from it. :)

  • @mikasaren The were dodging copyright laws, by changing the title a bit.

  • @mikasaren They're avoiding copyright laws.

  • @mikasaren sorry for replying to an old comment but i believe that it was named this after a german player or other associate of Buddy Rich's that would pronounce big swing face as big schving face instead so this piece was named almost as a homage to him.

that's what i've heard anyway sounds like a very plausible idea if you ask me though.

  • @mikasaren Big Swing Face was written by Bill Potts who lived just outside Washington, D.C. where he taught. Is his name on your sheet music?

  • Simply amazing.

  • Well I used my ears and eyes... Its NOT CHUCK. It according the album credits, my ears, and the review - its Ernie Watts (sax), Ray Starling (trumpet), Bobby Shew (trumpet), and of course Buddy on percussion.

    Grow up.

  • Use your ears Man .. That's Chuck blowing the solo .. ! Also it's on the album credits which I have.. Sorry , but but your WRONG...

  • @sctybaker there's an interview with Bobby Shew floating around on the internet where he talks about playing this solo.

  • lol..this is how tommy igoe's life started

  • Pretty sure thats Chuck ...

  • @sctybaker No...this is Bobby Shew
