I certainly agree! I'm assuming you mean recording quality when you refer to clear playing. It's amazing how clear and what good quality a clean 78 played on high quality players of the time can sound. Many examples on YT. Transfers to CD vary quite a bit from clear with depth to overly cleaned up, even ghostly sounding. Of course many performances are only found in scratchy versions but often worth the trouble to learn to hear the quality of playing through the noise.
