In the early days of this country, people used to teach themselves. Some were fluent in three or four ANCIENT languages (Latin, Hebrew. Greek, etc) before the age of about 15. They were required to know those just to be granted admission to a college. Even in public schools, they were one-room schoolhouses and kids were allowed to teach or tutor other kids.
