mmm took me a long time to understand that is useless trying to do this if you don´t know first how to play at least the basic rythms of congas, or timbal, or bongoes... and at least having mastered songo basic, samba basic and jazz basic
Also, although not as known, is a rythmic system of Hindu music called Konnokol (or something like that), a great rythm system that John Mclaughlin has made it more well known (learned from his exchange with Indian musicians). Danny Carey too said that his time practicing with Aloke Dutta (a very well known indian percussionist and tabla player) made him improve on his rythmic style and technique and on executing polyrythms with far more effectiveness.
Akira's the best, and he's right, many afro-cuban rythms are polyrythmic, that's why latin jazz drummers that mostly base around those kind of rythms also have (generally) great independence. Another great example: Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez. Great two drummers!
got almost got it after trying for 6 hours non stop...and over the next week i finally mastered what h plays here but....HOW ON EARTH DO YOU PLAY THE CLAVE INDEPENDENTLY WHILE SOLING!!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!? WTF!!!!
It took me ca. 1 month just to teach myself the very first pattern... then I listened to my own recording and it wasn't quite musical ;-). Yes it takes enormous discipline. There's a massive truckload of information packed in this free 6-minute video that could entertain us drummers for years, even decades. Kudos to Mr. Jimbo!
i have dvd called learn master drums and theres a guy on the dvd named andy smith hes a drum teacher in nashville and he demonstrated some intresting ways to use son clave and rumba clave and some latin rythms with running 16 ths on bass drum why playing the rythms with hands .
This stuff is the most challeging I´ve ever tried. It´s fantastic to improve control and it´s fun to play heh.
I do paradiddles and other rudiments above the feet ostinato (in normal 2/3 clave and rumba clave) and then I change the right foot pattern to "strong" (on the beat) 8th notes and "weak" 8th notes (syconpated). I´ve found that helps to gain control and independence in the left foot.
wow i taught this to a 10 year old and he picked it up quicker then i did. i think its about forgetting the way we view rhythms as interdependent on each other. ie... right hand holds time, while the rest of the limbs compliment. took me a while to learn this stuff only because i had to re-learn how to learn rhythms.
its witch craft, voodoo druming ! Akira is not from this planet...i think thats the best description I can give in regards to his style...the man is a BEAST !!!!
ugghhhhh i'm learning latin patterns right now...I play all styles, hard rock, metal and jazz and I have to say the latin and afro-cuban styles are by far the hardest...makes everything else much easier though once you get it. You have total control over everything you do!
i remember my first time messing with latin it was to this video. i spent a full day learning the first 3 exercises. my brain had never hurt so bad in my entire life. lol.
