See above response to supablackman. Oil shale: billions of barrels, but only about 4 billion extractable. That's about 1%, and it is extracted much more slowly than regular crude. The rate of extraction is slowing for crude and will soon be for all liquids.
Understand this: the future is one of LESS oil/energy no matter how much we drill. The US: peak in 1970 --> HUGE drilling boom --> extraction rate is now almost half of what it once was.

the 2 main things that determine the price of oil is the futures market and supply an demand. if we drill, we increase the supply of oil, when we drive down the demand of oil from foriegn markets, the price will drop. we use 25% of the oil, we take that out of the market, then supply exceeds demand, and the suppliers are going to be forced to scale back operations.

You have a basic misconception created by media mis-reporting geological facts: The amount of oil in place is not the issue, it is the rate of extraction and amount that can be recovered. So, despit there being a huge amount of kerogen (not oil) there, they can only extract a few million barrels a day (mb/d). Right now it's only 1 mb/d. In 15 to 20 years they MIGHT get that up to 5 or 6 mb/d. However, in 15 to 20 years we will have LOST 47 mb/d to declining production in existing wells.

On the other hand, Canada is a wash with cash because of the high oil prices. Just look at Alberta and Saskatchewan the oil producing provinces they are a flush with cash. I think my American friends have it all wrong. I am a Canadian and in here we drill our oil. The fact of the matter is we still pay alot which seems odd that we produce our own oil. The reason why oil price is so high is because of the market price globally. The market price is influenced by global demand and global affairs (i.e. wars). Plus our oil is private which means companies own it. It is very unlikely oil will be cheap again in the foreseeable future thanks to demand from China and India

In Canada's case these oil companies pay what is called royalties to the provincial governments b\c its the provinces who have jurisdiction over natural resources in Canada. However, these companies boost these province's economies like crazy. I mean in these provinces they dont even have enough workers they have to import workers from other provinces and other countries. The province of Alberta has a larger surplus than the federal government. Thats just ridiculous!!

As soon as we announce that we will drill here, gas prices will start to drop, because the prices are driven by the market and speculation. Right now speculation predicts low supply, high demand. If we allow drilling where we KNOW there is oil, we will raise supply to meet demand, and prices will go down. Capitolism = supply and demand.
We can pursue that oil without threat to our eco-system, "we have the technology". The Carrabu in Alaska that we were so worried about now find sanctuary and a place to give birth to their young in the shelter of OUR pipeline. They have actually flourished since the pipeline was installed.

You have a basic misconception created by media mis-reporting geological facts: The amount of oil in place is not the issue, it is the rate of extraction and amount that can be recovered. So, despit there being a huge amount of kerogen (not oil) there, they can only extract a few million barrels a day (mb/d). Right now it's only 1 mb/d. In 15 to 20 years they MIGHT get that up to 5 or 6 mb/d. However, in 15 to 20 years we will have LOST 47 mb/d to declining production in existing wells.

On the other hand, Canada is a wash with cash because of the high oil prices. Just look at Alberta and Saskatchewan the oil producing provinces they are a flush with cash. The government's there dont know what to do with the money from high oil prices. Those provinces dont even have no taxes (except federal tax). I mean it got to the point where the Alberta government had to give out free checks to its citizens because of the massive revenue it accumalated. This is other side of the story.

I think my American friends have it all wrong. I am a Canadian and in here we drill our oil. The fact of the matter is we still pay alot which seems odd that we produce our own oil. The reason why oil price is so high is because of the market price globally. The market price is influenced by global demand and global affairs (i.e. wars). Plus our oil is private which means companies own it. It is very unlikely oil will be cheap again in the foreseeable future thanks to demand from China and India

In Canada's case these oil companies pay what is called royalties to the provincial governments b\c its the provinces who have jurisdiction over natural resources in Canada. However, these companies boost these province's economies like crazy. I mean in these provinces they dont even have enough workers they have to import workers from other provinces and other countries. The province of Alberta has a larger surplus than the federal government. Thats just ridiculous!!

As soon as we announce that we will drill here, gas prices will start to drop, because the prices are driven by the market and speculation. Right now speculation predicts low supply, high demand. If we allow drilling where we KNOW there is oil, we will raise supply to meet demand, and prices will go down. Capitolism = supply and demand.

Iraq is producing LESS oil now than they were during Saddam's rule, which is adding to the fake increase in price. The war is for oil, Alan Greenspan. If the prices are from increased cost or supply/transportation issues. Then, even with a higher price, oil net profits would be the same, only gross would rise. Instead, profits are the most in the world's history. Therefore, profit margin is greater.
