Here is another book that will help one understand what Moe and Hogan did to have a repeatable swing, It is called (Ben Hogan's magical Device). It is only 17.00- U.S. Dollars, You will learn what they did in common in order to get the club square to the target time after time.
Moe's swing used a right forearm and shaft in line (parallell) at all times, and a more or less non-rotating club face through the swing (square to swing plane).
Both good things, and can be used with a conventional swing aswell.
As I understand it Moe would be average in distance. With that said he hit all his targets. When he was 65 someone on the video he was being recorded asked him when was the last time he hit a shot out of bounds and he said 8 yrs. To most (MEN) that think distance is the most important thing I say it isn't. I would and most would have taken Moe's ability's over distance. Just do a google on Moe records, Every pro today that had seen him believe Moe was the best ball striker.
Hip clearance is the most overrated nonsense in golf - i have seen man y people hit a ball on one leg ith zero hip clearance. The secret is position at impact! The one thing all pros share in common. HANDS BEFORE SHAFT WONT MAKE YOUR SWING LOOK DAFT
@Dreama40 I gave it a self-taught go based on the 3 videos I bought and it tore me to shreds. Keeping the feet on the ground and that wide stance and both hands with the palm grip just ate me up bad. It's a valid swing if you don't press and will accept that your distances will go down.
Probably if kid was taught this from age 8 it might work if the kid was flexible and could train all this in his head and muscles.
I agree with the stiff shaft and tipping stiff like Moe did.
So would it be fair to say that in the conventional swing there is more left hip clearance at impact than compared to moes swing, or is his leg action the same as the pros leg action and the main difference is in his swing plane action.I guess what i'm trying to say is was moes leg action different to modern day pros leg actions and if so what was/is the point of difference. Thanks for your comments !!!!!
Yes it is fair and right to believe that because in the conventional swing the reason is the lead hip has to clear because the conventional golfer is setup to close to the ball and the only way to get back to the ball is to make the room to do so by clearing the left hip when the golfer is right handed. Yes his swing was different because his hips and legs movement was for him to stabilize himself while his arms swing to impact then finish.
@Dreama40 The answer is that Moe's swing is actually quite similar to a number of great touring Pro's swings. Duval, Trevino, Azinger, Hogan to name a few. It's a question of degree... Moe's swing was on one end of the extreme in many obvious ways. The sum total of those differences probably resulted in the extreme straightness of his ball striking when he was on. Watching any touring pro in their prime is similar, however. O'Meara in 2000, Nick Price in the 90s, Trevino most of his career ect.
@Swingmachine1 I've got the VHS you cam shot this off of. And on it and the other tapes he's carrying on about the palm grip in both hands. But in the 1963 interview here on youtube he's talking a more conventional grip.
How would one describe Moes leg action? lateral with a slight left hip clearance? As i see it he does push off his right foot(grounded) to drive his legs forwards, but yeah any thoughts on Moes leg action would be greatly appreciated, as i get the top half of his action now ie, set up as per impact , correct grip, swing on or close to the plane, but havent heard much discussion on how well his leg/hip action was.
I too have been studying Moe's swing for about a year plus. It is certainly pure genius. I have been practicing it a bit more in the last few days. At first I did not trust myself, but his method works and you don't have to be extremely athletic to do it. You can certainly see the folly of the way golf has traditionally been taught; you don't need any special school, just study his swing and take it to the range.
The blade fanning open and closed vs blade de-lofting and re-lofting. That is my theory why he was so solid at impact. Moe never fanned his club open to close; he simply de-lofted in his backswing, much like modern professionals do in their short game.
If you all don't know there is a Movie being made as we speak about Moe Norman. His Movie is called Dance the Green. You can do a google search for Dance the Green and get more info. I tried to post a link but you can't on Youtube for some reason. IT will be out maybe this year. Can't wait.
Such a strange cat, I think he may have been a bit autistic, he certainly has some tendencies that point to it, but you know he was a swing genius and the best ball striker of our time, I for one feel he should get more praise than he does, R.I.P. Moe
TheBusiness55 like you I have been studying Moe as well but for 8 years. Even tho he may of had flaws in his descriptions there is more there then meets the eye. I have come to a place in this journey that what he describes is more true then ever. I know what he means about the pendulum I am there I have a lack of the ability to describe it as well but I know and can reproduce what he did day in and day out. It is a feeling of greatness.
Moe is all arms and full roll release. In his mind he thought like a pendulum which is probably why he was so confident. In reality he was a full roll arms and hands swinger. Contrary to what he thought, and what is often claimed, his face rolled over a lot through impact. A true pendulum can't function on the angled plane of a golf swing. And since his body was passive due to his wide stance and grounded feet, the toe had to roll. And did.
you tell me to watch it again, and then you explain how moe doesn't know what he's talking about.
that makes me think that you are kinda stuck in "golf fantasy land"
1. moe had great, powerful hips. go watch him again, and notice the angle of his shoulders to the club. they hardly change. that means, hip rotation. or you could say that the clubhead stayed pretty much in front of his body during the whole swing. that's not arms.
2. "what's close to a perfect swing? a pendulum! the clubhead can't come off line if it wants to! " he isn't saying it's a pendulum, he's saying it's LIKE a pendulum. which it is.
and the point is, use your hips to create power, keep the clubhead in line with where you wanna go, and make your swing simple.
You don't have to agree with moe, but come on, at least let's be realistic about this.
Tiger says that moe was the best ball striker he ever saw.
His hands were incredibly strong and so too were his forearms. The club is being held by the hands and the density of his muscles helped considerably with his ability to hit the ball. Moe said he squeezed the club with his left hand. With that being said he really deflected the ball when he hit it. Unless someone has his power there will not be people who can mimic his swing for accuracy or distance.
Moe Norman had Pop Eye forearms and tremendous upper body strength. Those are ingredients that are necessary to hit the ball as he did. He had very few moving parts, an abbreviated follow through and still hit the ball long. He used to be out by his car before his tee off in the morning lifting weights by his car. These are the stories that I heard about Moe. Hammer
One of the main reasons moe was so great too ,was that from the age of 12 he would hit 600 balls on the range, then go out on the range and chip the balls back into his bag. Then go do it again some times 3 or 4 times. He did this every day , 8 months a year for the next 15 + years. His golf teacher also never tried to change his style . If you put that effort into it your gonna be a legend just like Moe.
and he didnt do it cause he was forced to or thinks this is the only way to become famous he did it because he love the game soo much more than almost any golfer he did it for fun like a hobby
The pendulum motion that he demo's here is as if you tie a string to a fixed object then swing the object back and forth on the same line. If you extend your arms and bend over to the correct angle which is the plane of the club shaft and grip the club with a firm hold on the club and let the arms swing back and forth just as he says the lead arm is the rod and the trail hand is the claw so the claw holds to the rod to a form a fixed angle so the arms moves more like a pendulum. GET IT.

I play golf with a lady at my local club and I realize now that she swings like Moe.
I've heard other ladies criticise her action calling it a hockey or cricket shot.
I think she is the most under estimated player in the club.
We've won a number of competitions this year together because of her accuracy with this technique.
It doesn't matter how you hit the ball as long as it works for you.
