ellery hanley was easy won of the best rugby league player if not thee best rugby league player and I am glad to say im related to him. belive me or not
Loved watching him at Orana Park when he was playing for the Western Suburbs Magpies. It was no co-incidence that when he left, the Magpies fortune went down hill.
Mate you are a fucking joke - you made 2 videos on 2 exceptional players who's talent was made famous when they were at Wigan. The Martin Offiah video didn't contain one Wigan highlight (Wembley 94 would have been a start) and you begin this one off by saying Ellery Hanley's career was tarnished by a stint at Wigan. Are you on gas?? Get over your bitterness and acknowledge the whole of these 2 legends careers, not just the bits you prefer otherwise you come across as a Leeds fan...
he was truely a brilliant player, player ahead of his time. Too bad he didnt have good players around to reach the pinnacles of our game, the world cup
Hanleys skill of being in the right place at the right time was down to his supreme fitness, no-one in the British game could live with his strength and physique and he was more than a handful for the Aussies. He was 20yrs ahead of his time in GB and he's still superfit at 50 !
Easily the best player to ever play the game.Power, pace, finesse, could kick, take a high ball, tackle, pass to any distance, had supreme vision of the game... peerless.
No probs with tough footy but BIG probs with cheap shots that decide premierships. In any case, Tigers had last laugh in 05 when they smashed the Bullwogs 54-2.
Pfffftttt the bloke was a FAIRY couldnt even last the grand final in 88....He was soft as , the fact lamb one of the smallest blokes in the dogs team took him out says it all....
Guess us aussies were just too tough for the bitch hey....
sonny nickel dont make me laugh, he WAS shit!! ellery hanley best player this countries ever produced, and the only player who couldve scored that try against saints!! what a day that was too. my hero growing up and what a credit to the game he was,not afraid to say it either but without him wigan wouldve of been anywhere near as succesful as we were in the late 80's
was skating with Ellery today, and last week, i knew i recognised his face from somewhere, but i wasnt sure where.. really down to earth guy, and after watching this fook me am i going to have something to talk about next time i see him lol....
Great finishing player but seemed to have very sticky hands. Only saw him pass the pill once. He also appeared to break his legs every time he scored requiring his teammates to hoist him up. Odd
Ellery Hanley was by far the best player of his era certainly in Britain. As a Kid watching Wigan he was awesome week in week out. He had pace, great footwork, a footballing brain and really dedicated himself to improving his all round game. Hanley was to Rugby League what Floyd Mayweather Jr is to Boxing a natural talent who reached the peak of his profession. There as never been anyone close to him in terms of ability for the past 15 years and is easily of the best RL players of all time.
In 1988 he was the best player in the world. His performances for the Balmain Tigers in 1988 were as good as any player I have ever seen in Australia.
If he was playing the game today he would be the best & highest paid player in the world.
His speed & great acceleration, skill, strength, courage, competitiveness & footy acumen made him the complete footballer. He would make the 1st thirteen of any team in any era.
Best player there has ever been. Powerful, unnatural balance, could play in the pack and drive it in, could play at standoff and control the game, could play in the centre's and act as pivot and could play wing and finish them off. Oh yeh - and his kicking wasn't too shabby either. Definitely my favourite player ever and his try at Wembley against Stains is my favourite try of all time. Billy Whiz was arguably the best runner in the game, but all round, Hanley has it by a fair bit.
Funny how you didn't add the footage of Terry Lamb knocking Hanley out of action in the 1988Canterbury - Balmain Grand Final. He was never the same player after that!
I honestly think Jason Robinson is the best player ever. But Ellery Hanley was absolutly phenomenal and doesnt really get enough credit. Wish he had been around 10-15years later and had gone to Union.
I remember once catching a train from sydney to Campeltown to see Ellery Hanley play for Western Suburbs Magpies. This was after he played for Balmain Tigers a few years before. He was like the Viv Richards of cricket. When ever he played the game you were always watching him.
Its about time someone had a proper montage of Hanley and a DVD Boxset of his career as he scored over 400 tries, I would buy it tomorrow. I have 'Bonnie Tylers - Holding Out For A Hero' clip during his 1988 stint at Balmain which is 2 mins of sheer brilliance, I'd upload it if I knew how to do it. Hanley's was fitness and strength plus he was always on the shoulder of a guy who made the linebreak.
awesome player, watched him as a young boy at wigan.was mesmorised with some of the things he did on the pitch. A match winner and one of the greatest players ever to play at central park.

if he has to go as low as taunt another player as he scores, 1:11, he's no champ. glad the opposition prop used him as a sofa bed.

One of the very few English players who actually capable of making an impact on Australia - just extraordinary.

I'm sure the try at 3:31 was Des Drummond. I dont remember Ellery play no5 but he was another Wigan legend!!!!

Or possibly Henderson Gill? Him and Ellery grew up together in the Bradford Northern academy team and I think Gill played 5 at Wigan
