If everything had universal and unimpeachable merit there would be no movie critics, awards and recognitions, film studies, literary studies, etc. Twilight would rank as highly as Pride and Prejudice and find equal attention in the classroom.

That, thankfully, is not the case.  Some comedies have universal acclaim, and yes, they are superior to the ones that don't.
