People all over the world at any given time have to deal with bad politics affecting their lives negatively. Comparatively (i.e. Iraq) losing some business short term is nothing to cry about. A man comes to your village, he says "I'm standing for government. I'll give you as headman 250Baht for every vote you get me." So as Village headman you enroll the entire village to vote his way. Without knowing WHY or WHAT he is going to do with his election... Apart from make the village elders richer than they have ever been.

Sound like a system open to exploitation to you ???

Corruption can only be handled by a law.

I am not naive but I believe there is no way back once a country has started it's march to democracy.

I believe a court declared the present government illegal. THAT is the way to handle criminal behavior. My country has been a democracy for 85 years and we still have serious problems to handle, as the people and the world evolves.

I really love most aspects of Thai culture.

andersemanuel I agree with you - the court should decide - but these protests have been going many months BECAUSE I think no action was taking place.

mediamindcontrol - I'm neither Thai or went to university.

I did however spend alot of time getting to know the people one street over from the tourist zones, where I got to see for myself the desperation of people. It wasn't pretty and talking to people who run businesses they felt the demonstrations were /cont.

You should try to get off the beaten western path and into the villages and back streets - its a different story... I did not say Thai people are dumb at all.

My experience is that the average wage is ~500Bhat per month. The villagers aren't dumb, but they don't get any say either - they leave it to the elders who are the ones collecting the cash for the benefit of the village. Its not democracy unless its an informed decision.
