If people live longer, surely they will need to work longer. With an aging population (ie less people paying in to SS) it will cost more to run it and so either payments have to go up or contributions down (or raise the age).
Just think about that point - either contributions or age go up or allowance goes down. Many ways to fix that (those above or raise the taxes) and people will think one is better than the other, but it seems fairly logical.
The only problem I have with SS is that I am FORCED to participate in the ponzi-scheme. Give me the OPTION to opt out. Let me gamble MY money. I trust myself with the money more than the government.

@migkillertwo Medicare payments have been declining in the last year and half because of health care reform (what you deride as "Obamacare"), growing at an annual rate of only 3.8% (down from recent annual increases that ranged from 4.7% in 2010 to 15 percent in 2006). Providers are trying to address "health care reform" and are looking for ways to control costs. $500 billion was saved in Medicare because of the Affordable Health Care Act which targets corruption. Some people get the point now.

The government is a non-profit operation that can most afford to rescue the world economy by showing some economic balls. This is by no means a reason to hand the Social Security system over to Wallstreet fatcats that make their livings selling the rest of the US down the river. Neither for nor against Sanders or Koch, but...
If people live longer, surely they will need to work longer. With an aging population (ie less people paying in to SS) it will cost more to run it and so either payments have to go up or contributions down (or raise the age).
Just think about that point - either contributions or age go up or allowance goes down. Many ways to fix that (those above or raise the taxes) and people will think one is better than the other, but it seems fairly logical.

@migkillertwo Medicare payments have been declining in the last year and half because of health care reform (what you deride as "Obamacare"), growing at an annual rate of only 3.8% (down from recent annual increases that ranged from 4.7% in 2010 to 15 percent in 2006). Providers are trying to address "health care reform" and are looking for ways to control costs. $500 billion was saved in Medicare because of the Affordable Health Care Act which targets corruption. Some people get the point now.

The government is a non-profit operation that can most afford to rescue the world economy by showing some economic balls. At a time when Apple is as big as Europe's 32 top banks combined I don't think we can look to financial institutions to make the loans necessary for economic growth. The New Right got more and more energized until they finally won in 1980 with Reagan who, by the most conservative standards, was a big disappointment and an even BIGGER disappointment if you're liberal. @islandmuffin You forgot the part where the Chinese rejected the US banking model and refused to eliminate the separations between investment and commercial banking. They don't allow their banks to leverage debt 30:1, so they were not subject to the same degree of market crash. It's nice that you bring up the example of China. They are more Capitalist but not really any more free. See how Capitalism (an economic model) differs from Democracy (a political model).
Capitalism =/= Democracy.

Oh, and by the way, dessert on a deserted piece of waterlogged land, Native Americans DESERVE REPARATIONS FOR THE SLAUGHTER OF THEIR ANCESTORS as do other groups, some of which groups HAVE received reparations, like Jewish persons and Japanese, for their respective sets of barbarous treatment by the descendants of the original "Barbarians" while other groups subject to similar treatment by the same perpetrators have not received a dime.
You can't construct a scientific correlation on that.

Sorry everyone. Capitalism is a failure...thats why the economy is so bad. My bosses have been trying to get everybody to fight each other , to hate Christianity and to be selfish and ONLY DO FOR ONESELF. But the problem with that is, for example, Apple, the iPads are made by virtual slaves, and us rich folks act like we did all the work, even though we inherited all our money. Our parents were drunks who sent us away to school, and never loved us. WE ARE SORRY FOR RUINING YOUR COUNTRY.

Let’s say Obama increased Government power for good things. What happens when Obama is voted out and Dick Chaney takes over? Would you regret that Obama expanded Government power then?
