I've been playing the bass for about two months now and I need some help. do you think you could tell me how to increase my finger speed for fast songs like shout music. and also is your bass tuned in sharps or flats? because mine is ins sharps.
@fazsound Yes, I'm well aware of that... that's why I said playing ON the frets generally increases buzz. I didn't say anything about playing directly behind the frets, that's where I normally play and I never get buzz unless I play very aggressively. I don't think you really understood my comment
actually, the best place to fret is about 1/3 of the space behind the fret itself, not right behind it. Otherwise the break in the string isn't strong enough, therefore causing fret buzz depending on the dynamics in your right (plucking) hand
@subsonicbassist depends on the bass, the setup (including string gauge), how hard you fret and how hard you pluck.
Playing directly on the frets IS A BAD IDEA but playing directly behind will generally reduce fret buzz - you could always set ur bass up properly instead.
Also when jaco played fretted stuff he played directly behind the frets - i never heard anyone say he was renowned for bad fret buzz... Would you have told him to do his homework too........?
@XxDisciple666xX not a scrub, actually a professional Christian musician who plays for thousands of people in 3 services every week and I know that playing directly on the frets causes buzz. Metal vibrating on metal makes noise but you can play just slighty behind the fret and still have great intonation with considerably less fret buzz :)
to be honest, it's better to play on the frets if you can manage it. you can minimize some of the fret buzz this way. of course, you run the risk of hitting notes a halfstep sharp if you're sloppy. but them's the breaks.
It's just something we don't do.... during our services. We are a charismatic church, and people run, sing, dance, lay prostrate, but I can count on one hand the amount of times I have played shout music.
The 5th String is a B string that gives lower tones than can be accomplished on a 4 string. R&B and Gospel bass players often like 5 strings because of the lower tones that they can generate.
It depends on your budget, and what sounds and feels comfortable to you. My main bass is a Yamaha TRB 1005. I just recently purchased a SX bass, check out my Video entitled SX Jazz Bass.
Torch - you know I love what you're doing - if I may, let me expound a little without imposing.
The "shout" could be thought of as walking a two bar phrase over a dominant 7 chord over and over. What I think helps is for cats to actually write out ideas. More younger cats gotta get that reading and writing thing down.
The other "jazz run" , yes 1 - 6 - 2 - 5 / 3 - 6 - 2 -5 is called "Rhythm Changes". It's one of those things we hear all the time but don't know what it is, you know?
*when i 1st watched this i got mad. i thought 2 myself how am i suppose 2 follow. but when u said 4 string my soul got happy again!!!! thanx & God Bless*
torch i see you are still doing what you do! that is great man and i am forever learning hopefully one day i will meet someone willing to teach me and i can play at some church to learn. i believe there is only so much practice one can do and you learn the rest as you go. be blessed man a blessing. i enjoy learning from you via the net!!
I am a piano player teaching a 12 year old how to play bass... I can play enough to carry a service but dont know too much... so im doing home work to teach him. I have a question. why are you not centering your fingers in the center of the fret? is there a reason I dont know?
The note is actually created at the point of the fret. The reason from fretting at or just behind the fret, is you have to use less force, to fret the note, and minimizing fret clanks...If you really begin to dig in, the further your hand is above the fret, the easier it is to make lots of fret noise.
You are correct. Technically you can do anything you want as long as it makes sense and you land back on the one

Playing on the frets actually increases fret buzz.... do your homework.

If you are getting fret buzz and playing directly behind the fret, I suggest you look into getting your bass setup.

Hi Brother,
I think this was very helpful. I'm learning the numbers so the volume of the bass is fine. I appreciated the numbers. Be blessed. Pastor jeff

So the 4strings notes or E A D G?
dave021786 3 years ago
Correct. The typical tunings are:
4 string = EADG
5 string = BEADG
6 string = BEADGC
Torch7 3 years ago
how different or whats the difference between the 4string and the 5string bass.

How long did it take you to learn. I'm getting a bass because I wanna play in church :)

I started playing in Church after about 3 months of having my bass. I started making videos on Youtube a bit after that.
I am still learning myself. I think its an ongoing process.
