dude for normal races use medium weight characters and use bikes (best is probably mach bike, but any bike that drifts the same way is good). then you wheel stand down the straights and drift around the corners. also use manual. this is coming from a guy with over 8000 points still :D

About 6:18 based on what vehicle you have and what place you are in determines what items you get. Different vehicles get different chances of getting different items. The closer to 1st place you are then you get crappier items. The closer to las place the better the items you get are.

wow do u know the shortcut at mt? god its good at the beggining right before the first turn ul seesome leaves ride on that and go straight it will snatch u a item and give u boosts. the good thing with the item is ul fall behind becuase stuff slows u down but when u get the item it cuts the corner so ul get the bad item when ur in last and be in first ending up getting a good item trust me ive got a gold mushroom in 3rd
