Did E. abdicate, fake his roll and position himself to mitigate harsh subjugation of England in future? In ‘40, did his words & dangerous wandering from Paris to Provence to Portugal, offer himself as “bait”, hoping to delay Hitler’s invasion past summer & radar setup? (Hitler did delay.) --Did Edward’s desperate acts save Briton?

I like the Kitty Kelly book The Royals which has much the same info but it is framed in a more realistic way. The German connection still exists as Prince Phillips 3 sisters all married Germans princes (1 of which was a Nazi).

I think the title to the show is pejorative. If you believe the speculation, he was a traitor. But he was not king. Or does the title mean he betrayed the nation when he abdicated. I think part of the problem is modern people viewing the monarch with expectations that it is somehow egalitarian. It is a form of class structure that is labeled a constitutional monarchy. In that case, he had no real power to betray his nation before or after his abdication.

I think only the naive, the imbecilic and the hopelessly romantic believed the fairy tale that Edward abdicated his throne over Wallace Simpson. No vagina is worth that, period. I always suspected that he was a closet-homosexual whose private sexual predilections were discovered and who used Wallace to lend some semblance of plausible legitimacy to a politically-compelled abdication.

in england the king/queen is the head of the church so why the hell would he need to listen to them. besides ploting to overthrow the monarch is treason and consparicy last time i checked.

@prowlifik The title of head of church have no real power England has a constitutional monarchy, meaning Edward cannot be king without the permission of the people who are represented by parliament and the prime minister . So therefore it is not treason for the prime minister and parliament, the people who truly run the country  to consider if they want him to be king and if not, how to get rid of him.

One begins to think that God, himself, sent Wallis Warfield Simpson.  Had it not been for her, England probably would have entered the Nazi sphere voluntarily. And Hitler easily could have won the war, with no expense in fighting England...indeed, having England as an ally! SO glad he fell in love with Wallis, and had to abdicate. Some say eventually a statue of Wallis will be erected, in gratitude, some day!

told his son, (& his son told me), that the Duke was nice & natural...but the Duchess was arrogant & artificial. This may mean nothing...but it is an insight. Yet, she DID take him off the throne--and that's what counts.

I have always suspected that Charles was allowed to marry Camilla as part of some "back room" deal: he could have his woman in exchange for abdicating for William upon the Queen's death. Just about everyone failed to notice that when Kate & William announced their engagement & appeared before the press at St. James's Palace, a large portrait of King William IV had been placed on the mantle behind where Kate & William stood.

@mrlopez2681 I have always hoped that the monarchy would skip to William, but have a little bit of a sense of Charles' character, he will not vacate the throne unless forced to. Once the Queen is dead and he accedes to the throne, he can go back on whatever he may or may not have agreed to.

The whole point of hereditary monarchs is not needing to be worthy of the position; you have it because you were born to it, and a nation that puts its trust in that would want to have *a lot* of safeguards and precedents that were effectively a legal binding limitation. The whole point of precedence is that it is not binding.

It would be very easy to have an appointed "monarch" who served for, say,, 10 years at a time, and leave behind all this hereditary nonsense.
