I'd seriously recommend joining a gym. All of the top bodybuilders train at a gym. Getting yourself a gym membership is one of the best investments you can make in your overall health and fitness.
I'll tell you what, you post up a video of your calves and I'll post a video of my calves... Then we can let the viewers decide who's right and who's wrong :-)
You can experiment with different foot positions, wider stance, toes in, toes out, etc. and see if you can fee your inner calves working more. But for me I just focus on taking a medium width stance, toes straight, and strive to build the entire calve bigger. I don't even try to isolate the inner or outer heads.
@leemhayward i do everything like i do the straight ones until i cant do anymore which is usually around 100-200 reps, and then i wait like 20 seconds then i put my toes together and do it then i wait 20 seconds then put my heals together. i can tell the strength of my muscles is good but i am genetically unlucky cos they never grow lol
hey I have really skinny calves probably 1/3 or yours. I was wondering how can I make them grow? If i do this would they grow wider and longer? or what do you recommend?
I love training calves although my calves suck haha! So I just have a question, my gym doesn't have the seated calf raise machine. So would I still get good results from doing donkey calf press, or standing calf raise like this?
@attwood93 start stretching as many times a week as you can, its gonna lessen cramps by a million times i promise. stretch before during and after your workout, plus its great for your muscle, more room for more blood but stretching too far and too much, is horrible for you. just like the training, use technique
Thanks Lee, I do my farmers walk for my grip strength, but I add in the raised calve because I only carry about 40 pounds anyway. I am following your facbook pic's with your NEW Camaro. What a beast of a car... just like it's owner. Talk to you soon Lee... Herc. PS/ I ment 40 punds on each arm...

Afternoon Lee, I have been working my outer calves muscles by standing and placeing my heels touching and toes flared out ( like a piguine ). For my inner calves muscles I reverse it, my toes touch and my heels flare out ( like pigone toed ). again standing. I also do farmers walk while raising up on my toes as I walk. I also do one arm dumbell raises for both side. I have been complimented on my calves, but what do you think on my clave exercises... Talk to You Soon... Herc.
Personally I don't try to combine moves very much (i.e. farmers walk with a calve raise, etc.). I think you'd probably be better off just focusing on one thing at a time.
holy crap lee!! your calves are freaking huge!! X(
i am a "have not" genetically big calfe person and my calves are very stubborn :/
and the thing is that i dont just work out for fun and want to have an even porportioned body. i want to be a professional bodybuilder so i reeeeaaaally need to build my calves and they are definetally too small compared to the rest of my body. my upper legs are getting there since i didnt work out my legs when i first started to work out but my calves arnt :/
1. are seated calf raises crucial for building claves becuase my gym doesnt have one ?
2. sometimes when training calves i get some sort of cramp feeling in the sole of my foot at the top of the contraction, could this be due to placing of my foot ?
@Attwood93 dont know if this helps but i use a leg press machine and put the seat to the furthest away setting. then put your feet on the bottom of the plate. i think its a fairly similar movement.
@samblunt93 i do standing calf raise and leg press raise 2-3 times a week and they wont grow cos i get the cramp feeling before my calves begin to fatigue :/
Seated tends to work more of the outer head of the calve. Standing works more of the overall calve and generally allows for heavier weights to be lifted.
Thanks for the vid. My sport through early years was swimming, which while giving me great upper body strength means I have bloody scrawny legs! Hopefully I can try to turn that around...
It's going to vary for everyone. But generally with regular training you should see strength gains on a weekly basis and that should in turn allow you to see actual physical changes on a monthly basis.
hey Lee, is it a good idea to hit my calves first when am fresh on days where i train bodyparts like chest, arms or shoulders that dont require any lower body involvement?
Unique exercises that i don't see in the gym... I'ma incorporate this to my calf workout.
The unique exercises i have in my arsenal are. Decline triceps pulldown's and Isometric hold calf raises, followed by a burn out half range of motion calf raises.
can someone please tell me whats the damn secret to have big and strong calves? i work out everyday and my arms, chest, back, and legs are great, but my calves are still skinny. :(
Very true about the shoes, the chucks are nice for this type of workout because you can make those arch motions, when with normal running shoes you coudn't.
It should be noted that seated calves hit the soleus primarily, and that the ideal calf routine includes these as well as calf work with full knee extension (like standing calf raises). Full RoM does help immensely though.
I agree that holding the Calf raise at the top gives you a lot better calf workout. I use a little bit different technique using the Hammer Strength standing shrug machine. I turn around so that I am facing the machine. Then after loading up 300-400 lbs, I lift the weight, perform the first portion of the calf raise standing on my toes, and then hold it at the top and complete a nice slow shrug before setting my feet back down.(5sets of 10 reps). This gives me an unbelievable pump!!
For lifting flat shoes like Chuck Taylors are awesome. You don't want an arch or soft cushion soles like running shoes. Flat soles are best for giving you a solid base for lifting.
one thing u all need to know that you all should have the proper machines to exercise. even heyward can't have good calves if he hasn't got some. so it depends on how much good equipments u have IN UR GYM.

@trickster The seated variation puts most focus on the soleus and standing on the Gastrocnemius. So you should so both in either order to correctly balance calfs.
You think this could work but standing using a smith machine, but standing on a hing wood plank or stack of some of those rubber plates? My place has no seates raises.
@alexsmeels Im sorry im NOt gay so Im not a specialist on homosexuality such as yourself, furthermore..what the hell are you doing reading a comment I made 10 months ago...perhaps another gay trait Im unfamilar with?..good luck with all that and please remember to use protection we dont need any more alexmeels running around outside of San francisco...
Same idea, you'll just have to hold a pair of dumbbells (depending on your strength). But when holding the position for 10 seconds like this, balance becomes an issue when doing calf raises the way you want to do them. You can also do seated raises at home. Sit on the edge of a chair or couch with your toes on that same block you're using (or you may need a taller one to get the stretch). Then just put a dumbbell on top of each thigh (hold it in place with your hands) and do the same exercise.
Nice lee. Good vid. only if more people followed this. You see alot of short jerky calf movements in the gym. This is a welcomed wake up call for those people!!! 5 stars

after I work out my calves one gets super pumped and the other is only slightly pumped and smaller. But they both get sore.
Any advice anyone. should I do just the small calve, or double the work ?????
I am still new to calves
planetlover316 2 years ago
"one-leg movement".
first make sure to know which part of your calf is week
so if lower calf - do seated raises
if upper calf - do standing raises
inside of calf - do with toes pointed in (and vice versa for outside calf)
if you feel that one calf is smaller, add two extra sets for the smaller one after every calf exercise.
ex. if you do 4 sets of standing raises, finish them 4 and keep going with 2 extra for the smaller one.
and hopefully this would work.
