Volvos awd is useless offroad!!! Even Volvo says that!!! Their awd is ment to be fwd whit help by the rear wheels if it is a bad road like ice on the road or something, not drive offroad couse they know its useless to sell 50-50 awd in expensive cars.... And a new Volvo are expensive....
Volvo is such a big mouth company, it cant go clean over simple off road course, while a cheaper american Jeep can easily pass it. I do know that the XC90 is a safe piece of machine, but why did Volvo shout loud about its awd system if its useless :(
It is sick to drive XC90 in places like that. Either stupid or irresponsible. It is aan on road car with like off-the track ability. And there it is better than any off-road as comfort is the key. Why commenting that?
Volvo's AWD system the worst among AD+WD cars in the world. The video clearly showed that it is not capable of getting through any obstacles. It seems like Volvo install a fake AWD without limited slip or any system that can transmit the power to the wheels that have more traction. So what we see is just a one wheel drive car whose wheel with less traction spins like crazy. Not only this XC60, but also other Volvo's AWD have this problems.
@mrqoopify It's just an old version of Haldex AWD. Obviously, Volvo knows that most SUV drivers won't venture that far off road except for the if it snows in winter. Then you put on chains and even a FWD can make it easily. But thank God that the 2008+ XC60 and XC70 have newer much better versions of Haldex, and therefor are actually better off road.
guess what people all these new "4WD" cars they have 2 day are for nothing more than getting up a snowy driveway theyre just electronic monitering systems that limit wheel spin/slippage theyre not locking differentials and transfer cases like real 4wd for the rough stuff so if u take ur AWD suburban family crossover out in anything more than a few inches of snow it WILL get stuck..... SORRY
@braydenmartindale If you don't need the space you're MUCH better off with an XC60 or XC70 as they have newer better versions of the Haldex AWD system that Volvo and Audi use. I know, I have an XC70 and it can defanatly do more than the XC90 and if I had gotten the XC60 with more ground clarence it would have been better but oh well.
I had a Subaru Forrester XT, 5 spd - insanely fast car, I loved that car UNTIL on a slightly wet curvy road under full acceleration, the back end got loose and even though I am good at sliding cars sideways, the Forrester completely became unhinged and spun a full 180 into a mud embankment. Now, I didn't care about spinning out - it happens, what pissed me off was that the car was stuck in a couple inches of mud! Luckily, I called my wife who pulled me out - in her Volvo!
@neverhearof Why is that embarrassing? what would be tho is if she showed up and just got in your car and drove it out....i have a small ditch in front of my house and droped the front tire of my $100.000 Peterbilt into it and had to hook my XC90 to it and have my wife drive and pull me out....Thats a head hanger right there!
Hi ding0925, And if thats the case it could be ONE wheel drive sometimes, thats the wheel that spins hopelessly when the motor is stuck ! Ha ha ha ha... good point you make young man.
@ding0925 And, many 4x4's AREN'T locked in all the time in off-camber situations, or even heavy mud unless you are running lockers. I would rather have a Euro All Wheel Drive such as a Haldex Traction System or a Quattro system over many American so-called "4x4"'s.
Hi reggiecis4x4, It was 3...2...1... actually, but your right we don't get to see what happened next! Since I didn't film, edit or direct the video I can only pass your comment on, which I will do because I have pondered on the issue myself before. Your the only one to point out the mistake in the editing.
Yes your right, I know nothing about Subaru except they are reliable, well built, fast & very expensive! I question your statement "Outback to places Jeeps blush...;O)" Being a "professional photographer" doesn't mean anything to me really. When you tell me you have pulled a trailer or something similar over Ayres Rock full laden with something heavy & substantial then Subaru will have my approval, the same applies to Volvo. Neither of which can hold a light to a Jeep or Defender!
An outback where a Jeep would bush, like the shopping mall?
In the snow we had last winter, over a matter of 3 weeks i pulled 4 outbacks 1 land rover and a Isuzu trooper, this was on top of the Ford transit, a Nissan mpv and a honda.
omg those guys cant drive...volvo xc90 is a great and beutiful car...though its not buildt for these conditions nor are most of the other SUV:s today. They are built for the country side roads and alitle more. Get a land rover or whatever if this is what you want to do! Volvo RULES 4 life!
Obviously the Volvo isn't a Land Rover, so it won't be able to keep up with them offroad, but it's damn handsome, more than capable for most people's needs and safe as a bank vault. I'm impressed with its abilities.
Keep in mind the Volvo has street tires on it , the smothest tread amaginable for quiet hyway ride, i have an extra set of wheels for mine with radial skinny snow tires and its nothing like the one you see in this vid...
The D5 will most definitely get more than 23mpg unless you are driving like a twat in it and as far as off roading, it isn't comparible to a LR Defender as that's a proper 4x4 farm vehicle. When off roaded correctly the xc90 performs better than all other road built 4x4's and the top range models are fully loaded.
There's obviously something wrong with his D5 them, because it should get far more than 23MPG.
Even the 2.5T petrol gets more than that.
It's not a crap off roader either, it's actually very capable off road. When you compare it to a defender, which is basically built to live off road, then it might look crap.

I want to buy an XC90, but wanted to ask if it is compensated and economically. I'm from Brazil and I have my doubts. Unfortunately here in Brazil naum is the diesel version, only the petrol version. This is a type of car many maintenance?
Considera, DZ.
Thank you, did not have to translate ... rsrsrs, well, thank you for your opinion. As told her, I intend to soon buy a Land Rover or Volvo. . Now I look in my country more!
@Blindzector Get a Land Rover, Volvo's are a very very poor car, I have had two. Very silly issues when doing maintenance on them, e.g. Changing a Headlight bulb! haha not easy on a Volvo! Poor off road, and crap turning circle! Get an LR3 if you want 7 seats!
It´s not true that this car was brand new 10 months ago. The XC90 have new taillights since 2007. And on the video it´s the old ones. This kind of cars works like shit in terrain! Believe me I have one. But in wintertime it´s superb on swedish roads, and in that case, british roads are nothing compared to what we have here. We have this big hill up to our farm, and my car have no problem going up, not even when i have my horsetrailer on with two big horses in it.
Hi marsatter, You need to read the description again & then read the comments again before making a comment. Nobody has stated or otherwise claimed the XC90 featured in this video was brand new 10 months ago. This video was posted 10 months ago, but was recorded in 2003 as stated in the video description. Believe me that your XC90 would have struggled where this one did. XC90 towing capacity 1800kg, you might be over the XC90's limit? Land Rover towing capacity 3500kg & in a different class!
@jakeom Hello yoyung man, They are only made as fourwheel drives as far as I know! I have never heard of a front wheel drive version or any other 2wd variant. Thats not say that somewhere in the world there isn't one!
@jakeom At the tender age of 14, you should be more respectful of people with greater knowledge of a subject you are commenting on! I should presume then that you are a member of the gutter gang dressed in trainers, track suit bottoms & a hoody. A self confessed expert on all things all wheel drive. More accurately, probably spent too long driving a computer game version which has deluded you into becoming an armchair expert!!! jakeom is spelt wrong, should be jokeom!
no how could u think that, my comment was not towards u at all it was to "jakeom" maby ur thinking of jakeom when he said "fu dumb ass, front wheel drive...
@suprakilzz26 Sorry, I just wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, having looked at jakeom's channel it turns out he is 14yr old kid. And an abusive one at that! He obviously has no idea what he is on about which might explain his retort! He is what I call and Ebi, = Embarrassed by inexperience, these people usually fire off swearing & abuse when embarrassed by someone elses greater experience! All the best for 2010 to you!
It was brand new at the time, so should be respected not abused or risked for the sake of off-roading, in my opinion anyway. I don't think it could handle much more, for a soft roader is was good enough, but would not follow a Freelander or similar. Good enough for British snow and ice but not tough enough for British mud and rocks!
It depends on what do you need the car for. One of my cars is a XC90 3.2, with a customized Ocean Race Edition engine of 396 hp. I had no problem to race against any X5, X6, Q7 or Touareg...
Fair comment if you like the XC90 enough to spend money on that kind of performance. I could make a Series 2 Land Rover fast if I put a supercharged big block Chevy V8 under the bonnet, but it would be a waste in many ways. No point in having a 4x4 perform like a sports car if it cannot perform like a 4x4 off road, Range Rover blends luxury, performance & ability perfectly. XC90,X5 & Q7 stand no chance against it except in road speed & thats it!
I get your point. But all the Land Rovers are built for off-road. I am not interested in off-road. And yes, in a race, the Range Rover will most probably not stand against XC90, X5, Q7.
@cristicharisteas actually the range rover will outperform the xc90,and the 2010 supercharged will beat the x5 48xdrive,and q7 in a straight line, and will be alot more comfortable
HI passatski, thanks for your comment. For a soft-roader it was ok. I would rather have an XC90 than a Jap 4x4 of the same class. I shall pass on your compliment to H, as he sorted the video.
XC90 won Texas Truck of the Year DESPITE being a car platform. LR has been building off roaders for decades but did they ever take it upon themselves reinforce the roofs of these heavy vehicles with Boron Steel (or better material) so they would maintain a survival space in high speed rollovers ? Volvo For Life!
Land Rover uses steel for the roof panel in Range Rover, Discovery & probably Freelander. The Defender however is alloy. I take your point about safety cells but there could be many other objects that could get to you anyway. Better to avoid high speed rollovers in the first place!
ye well build quality depends a many things for example, wood you by a Toyota if it has done a million miles, no. i driven a xc90 for years and the only problem i had was cost of petrol. Sure i heard others had problems but they thought it was a land rover and rove it like one, me. i live in the coldest climate in the wold above the arctic circle, were there is bad roads, 30- fahrenheit some times, 2 meter snow. still it works every time.
You don't live in the coldest climate in the world, above the Arctic Circle and at 19 I doubt you even own an XC90 nevermind have driven one for "years"! As for -30 Fahrenheit & 2 metres of snow your imagination works everytime not your fantasy XC90. Why do you let your countrymen down with your BULLSHIT!!!
There isn't really any content in the video that directly compares the XC90 to either the Defender or Discovery. The video shows some of the XC90's ability off road. However, the XC90 is aimed at the same market as the Discovery. It not only lacks in off road ability but also towing ability if you were to compare the two. A pity also that the interior door handle came off in my hand when I sat in one at the dealership, so it does equal the Discovery for build quality!
Hi steprestwich, My brother should take the honour for editing the video, so I shall pass on your compliment. As for trading my Landy, no chance matey! My brother & I looked at a new XC90 in the showroom. When I closed the front passenger's door the silver trim came off in my hand, ooops! Plus they are just to soft for my kind of work, cannot pull a decent trailer, have no low box, cannot be hosed out & generally are not built for more than a bit of snow or a camp site. Regards, DZ.
I don't know, I wasn't there when he took it back. he did wash it off beforehand but not underneath! Yes the 90 proved quite a blessing that day. Regards.

@Blindzector Get a Land Rover, Volvo's are a very very poor car, I have had two. Very silly issues when doing maintenance on them, e.g. Changing a Headlight bulb! haha not easy on a Volvo! Poor off road, and crap turning circle! Get an LR3 if you want 7 seats!
danieldavies980 2 years ago

Land Rover towing capacity 3500kg & in a different class!

is this version frwd?
jakeom 2 years ago
@jakeom Hello yoyung man, They are only made as fourwheel drives as far as I know! I have never heard of a front wheel drive version or any other 2wd variant. Thats not say that somewhere in the world there isn't one!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
wtf are u talking about there is no such thing as frwd
suprakilzz26 2 years ago
fuck u dumb ass, front wheel drive...
jakeom 2 years ago
@jakeom At the tender age of 14, you should be more respectful of people with greater knowledge of a subject you are commenting on! I should presume then that you are a member of the gutter gang dressed in trainers, track suit bottoms & a hoody. A self confessed expert on all things all wheel drive. More accurately, probably spent too long driving a computer game version which has deluded you into becoming an armchair expert!!! jakeom is spelt wrong, should be jokeom!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
I hope that your comment is not directed at me?
DingleZilla 2 years ago
no how could u think that, my comment was not towards u at all it was to "jakeom" maby ur thinking of jakeom when he said "fu dumb ass, front wheel drive...
suprakilzz26 2 years ago
@suprakilzz26 Sorry, I just wasn't 100% sure. Anyway, having looked at jakeom's channel it turns out he is 14yr old kid. And an abusive one at that! He obviously has no idea what he is on about which might explain his retort! He is what I call and Ebi, = Embarrassed by inexperience, these people usually fire off swearing & abuse when embarrassed by someone elses greater experience! All the best for 2010 to you!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
the guy in the volvo drives like he is afraid to scratch it...
and that's something you don't wanna care about when you are going offroad...
car can handle much much more then what is being asked of it....
marinier88 2 years ago
It was brand new at the time, so should be respected not abused or risked for the sake of off-roading, in my opinion anyway. I don't think it could handle much more, for a soft roader is was good enough, but would not follow a Freelander or similar. Good enough for British snow and ice but not tough enough for British mud and rocks!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
It depends on what do you need the car for. One of my cars is a XC90 3.2, with a customized Ocean Race Edition engine of 396 hp. I had no problem to race against any X5, X6, Q7 or Touareg...
cristicharisteas 2 years ago
Fair comment if you like the XC90 enough to spend money on that kind of performance. I could make a Series 2 Land Rover fast if I put a supercharged big block Chevy V8 under the bonnet, but it would be a waste in many ways. No point in having a 4x4 perform like a sports car if it cannot perform like a 4x4 off road, Range Rover blends luxury, performance & ability perfectly. XC90,X5 & Q7 stand no chance against it except in road speed & thats it!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
I get your point. But all the Land Rovers are built for off-road. I am not interested in off-road. And yes, in a race, the Range Rover will most probably not stand against XC90, X5, Q7.
cristicharisteas 2 years ago
Fair comment. An olde English saying springs to mind "Horses for courses".
DingleZilla 2 years ago
@cristicharisteas actually the range rover will outperform the xc90,and the 2010 supercharged will beat the x5 48xdrive,and q7 in a straight line, and will be alot more comfortable
rangerover06sc 2 years ago
I bet it cannot beat my XC90...5,7 0-100 km/h
cristicharisteas 2 years ago
ok where are you getting those numbers from, even with a v8 it 7.4 seconds to 60mph.
rangerover06sc 2 years ago
have you ever heard about engine tuning?
cristicharisteas 2 years ago
yah,and it could just as easily be done to a range rover so thats not really a valid point.
rangerover06sc 2 years ago
Volvo is nice. But i would without a doubt take one of the two landrovers in the video, if i was given the choice of those three.
Land rovers rock, especially Defender and Range Rover.
johanj81 2 years ago
This is the old haldex system. The newer ones are way better!
Odersjo 2 years ago
Even more impressive than i would have imagined. Nice vid!
passatski 2 years ago
HI passatski, thanks for your comment. For a soft-roader it was ok. I would rather have an XC90 than a Jap 4x4 of the same class. I shall pass on your compliment to H, as he sorted the video.

XC90 won Texas Truck of the Year DESPITE being a car platform. LR has been building off roaders for decades but did they ever take it upon themselves reinforce the roofs of these heavy vehicles with Boron Steel (or better material) so they would maintain a survival space in high speed rollovers ? Volvo For Life!
swedishiron 2 years ago 14
Land Rover uses steel for the roof panel in Range Rover, Discovery & probably Freelander. The Defender however is alloy. I take your point about safety cells but there could be many other objects that could get to you anyway. Better to avoid high speed rollovers in the first place!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
True true. I have an XC90 and it is the best car! It has the best handling also.
prepn4cali 2 years ago
@swedishiron even better, land rover owners put roll cages in them
iENJOIskating209 1 year ago
ye well build quality depends a many things for example, wood you by a Toyota if it has done a million miles, no. i driven a xc90 for years and the only problem i had was cost of petrol. Sure i heard others had problems but they thought it was a land rover and rove it like one, me. i live in the coldest climate in the wold above the arctic circle, were there is bad roads, 30- fahrenheit some times, 2 meter snow. still it works every time.
breakthenall89 2 years ago
Johannes,
You don't live in the coldest climate in the world, above the Arctic Circle and at 19 I doubt you even own an XC90 nevermind have driven one for "years"! As for -30 Fahrenheit & 2 metres of snow your imagination works everytime not your fantasy XC90. Why do you let your countrymen down with your BULLSHIT!!!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
to compare a land rover and a xc90 is something a really dumb thing to do because their designed for different purposes^^
breakthenall89 2 years ago
Hi Johannes,
There isn't really any content in the video that directly compares the XC90 to either the Defender or Discovery.

"most impressive"
are you sure, maybe you meant most impressively crap :p
brownie200708 2 years ago
Well, for a soft roader I suppose it is most impressive. But crap in real terms!
DingleZilla 2 years ago
Nice vid, although I guess from this there's no chance you'll be trading your LR for the XC90 lol
steprestwich 3 years ago
Hi steprestwich, My brother should take the honour for editing the video, so I shall pass on your compliment. As for trading my Landy, no chance matey! My brother & I looked at a new XC90 in the showroom. When I closed the front passenger's door the silver trim came off in my hand, ooops! Plus they are just to soft for my kind of work, cannot pull a decent trailer, have no low box, cannot be hosed out & generally are not built for more than a bit of snow or a camp site. Regards, DZ.

mozillafirefox090 3 years ago
Sí estoy de acuerdo. Una 4x4 con capacidad para un recreativas. No construido para exigir trabajo off-road o de remolque pesado. Gracias por tu comentario.

Am I right in thinking that's all in the area of Holmfirth? Some cracking routes over there.

What did the Volvo dealer say when he took it back after that?!! Good job the 90 was on hand to tow that and the disco out!
ColumbineMHLR 3 years ago
Hello young man,
I don't know, I wasn't there when he took it back. he did wash it off beforehand but not underneath! Yes the 90 proved quite a blessing that day. Regards.
