I'd just like to apologize profusely for my last comment on here--I don't know what was going on with me that day, but I was being extremely rude, which is very unlike me. I'm very sorry for that and I feel really bad, so please, if possible, could you ignore that comment and forgive me? I honestly can't believe I actually wrote that...
If I was scottish I would feel proud of seeing a dance of my country being danced all aroud the world. It is so gratious and elegant, women look impresive whilst dancing this. Thanks to the dancer for letting see in what is acttually very difficult to do, trying to show in a slower motion what is done actually fast. Thank you and keep going, you look great.
Well I don't know about you guys, but in NZ this step can be done 2nd or 3rd (in a 4 step sword) or 4th (in a 5 step sword). And the clapping is to signify the change in tempo for the final step. Is it worth arguing over where the step should go?
And I would challenge anyone to do a sword dance at a 4th of the usual speed, if that. THEN criticise. Its NOT easy. I would know, I am currently teaching two 6 yr-olds the dance and it is difficult to slow down. And i've been dancing my whole life.
Note to judgmental and negative people: She's DEMONSTRATING. It's hard to learn when the person who's teaching you is going too fast, so she's trying to slow down the steps. That's why it looks weird or like she just learned it "last week."
Wow. That's all I can say. I mean, do you seriously take highland? When did you start, last week?
First of all, the pointing step is NOT the second step of the sword, it's the fourth step. Have you never taken theory? Well, I guess that's obvious by the way you're describing it. Srsly, pick up a textbook. I have no respect for you.
As a dancer myself I have seen a few negative coments here. Wow all I can say is Scottish highland dance is beautiful when danced to the pipes!!! When you try to dance slowly to show others the steps it looks cumbersome!!! Let's give thisdancer some slack here she is demonstrating the steps - not dancing in a competition! Oh and if you think I don't know what I am talking about - I have been dancing since 1968 and learned under some of the best teachers in Scotland!!! Go Girl!
I grew up on the 'other side' of the border but have always enjoyed watching the mysteriously symbolic Fling, who ever is dancing it! Even if you really did have the 'best' teacher in the world, if you don't have natural grace, work hard or even look like you are enjoying it then the dance is wrong. Kiera is trying to explain, think, teach, go through the movements slowly and without a tempo - all in front of a TV -and did it really well. She has my vote as she clearly loves to dance.
Instead of everyone freaking out over the fact that she wobbles, how about we just enjoy knowing that people all the way over in Michigan are dancing the Scottish Highland Fling- why so much hate on youtube all the time??
i dont want to sound rude but you have horrible balance when you are walking through a dance. if you hold your body up stright you would be able to keep your balance
Load's of people commented you on your origin and dancing, to me this is a great vid to learn the basics.
To the people who commented it... if you're taught by the best of the world, have years of experience or aren't appealed by her performence... please make a vid of your own, and let everyone here know how it's done properly!!!
It is huge help, but not dead necessary. The ballet placement, muscle traing, and foot positions, with turnout, are always very useful, but they are in ANY style of dance. Doing it without parallel ballet can be done; it's just harder.
Oh yes, always! I do/have done lots of kinds dance and I can't think of a single one in which ballet is useless. I have been corresponding on line with a nice Polish boy--Warsaw!?!!--who loves to dance and can't find any ballet or character classes, or even a "folk" group. Can you believe it? I live in Cleveland, Ohio, and we have MANY Scots, Irish , Polish, Hungarian, Lithuanian and ALL sorts of dance groups, some so-so, some wonderful. And there that poor kid sits. He gets hip-hop. Whew.
Ummm...what does being American have to do with anything? Being of a certain country doesn't mean you can't do/teach the dance of another's. Personally, I think you're being a bit high strung about this whole thing.
2 beat Pas De Basques (PDB's) should have been danced! Fifth position can also be danced (where described as 3rd position), ARMS may also be in 2nd position on the 1/4 turns (TO THE LEFT) and the last quarter may also be staying in BOX D!

Yoo, the pointing step is the 2nd step you learn when you start the swords!
May be the 4th step but its the 2nd step she is doing for the swords!
And i think she has picked up a textbook, but you needa drop the attitudee!

Hey, I don't mind people who're not Scottish teaching Scottish dances, but when they do it badly... it causes a lot of
"She's bad because she's not Scottish."
Which probably isn't true.

If you're going to put videos on Youtube, you should learn to dance properly. And to "TaxEvasion" she's not Scottish, she's from MICHIGAN.
