There is actually an earlier version of the theme that was used from 1994-1998, and both of these themes are referred to as the "WPIX Custom News Package".
I know the graphics are boring for sure! News music is an obvious US thing, don't believe the BS about news music composed from the rest of the world! It IS booorrriiinnnggg and its crap!
Thanks for posting. This is from the summer of 2006. The substitute video/robotics engineer spells his name "Julian", (not Julien as on the lower-third credit). Earlier that evening, we sent Air11 up to record and feed generic nighttime beauty shots of the city. This is the first use of those raw (unedited) images, as noted by the quick zoom-in and focus check on the Chrysler building.
Normally I can't stand overmodded/clipped sound--sorry, it's the radio guy within me--but this theme is so amazing that I don't even care. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the upload of one of the most impressive modern themes ever made.
They've used it for more than a decade, and it still doesn't sound dated at all. Says something about how well composed it is. It fits NYC like a glove too.
@dan28129 Oh I'm aware, thank you very much. WPIX being owned by Tribune since launch has nothing to do with whether this particular theme fits the station and the city.
Lovely music, but I do have a strange question. Does WPIX keep it's news broadcasts, or have a deal to have them preserved by an outside organisation? I just wonder, since the Library of Congress did a relatively recent (late-1990's) document claiming that the majority of local newscasts in the United States aren't kept. It would be a real shame for local history like this to be lost.
As far as I know, WPIX still has a decent archive (which is how they were able to get a Yule Log restoration). WABC has material dating back to I believe the late 1970s, and I'm sure WCBS and WNBC have similar archives.
However, I know WNYW didn't save most of their material, and WWOR threw out most of theirs when MCA took over...
some of the best music in the country!

They've updated the arrangement, but it's still fundamentally the same. I think it's about 15 years old.

@hintomedia -- "Fits NYC like a glove too." Maybe you are unaware that WPIX is and has been owned by the Tribune Company (of CHICAGO) since 1948.
