Sigh...I have to admit that I'm hopelessly lost when musicians are compared and not measured in their own right, in their own genre.
The same can be said of poets that present identical fare, but yet do so in distinctly different manner.... which might seem skewed to some and beloved by others...depending on the method of interpretation.
The Cale and Bauhaus paths are avant-garde and gothic (respectively) and are two very distinct interpretations of rock.
What year did this come out? It reminds me of Jim Morrison and the Lizard King stuff. I think this is better because he has a twisted sense of humour and sarcastic attitute. Plus, my next door neighbours are annoying me right now so I'm loving this song
It's so wonderful to find the original here. I have the original single from 1979 - this is the B-side of the single 'Mercenaries (Ready for War).' I saw Cale on this tour - he was a madman.
i saw bauhaus 83 to be fair they were totally dark and excellent and do put their own interpretations on songs very well and they do it as a tribute to their heroes
This isn't a demo, or at least it was released on the b-side of the "Mercenaries (Ready For War) 45 in 1980. It's a 4 track recording with John Cale : vocals, bass, Wurlitzer piano and Michael Mason on rhythm machine.
Song/playing brilliant;singing is the highlight IMO. typical live Cale, stilted, mannered; emotionally off base in a disturbing way. Rather like Ozzy, as bizarre as that may sound. JC has been known to have his"OO moments' in performance.Second half spectacular; uses voice as instrument in composition; real emotional force because production alters it, always been a great composer/producer!!Like LR, ever The University Don. To cool to rock, try though they might. Vulnerableandlovablexxx

Interesting to note that Rozz Williams was influenced by Cale's vocals as well as Bowie's...never realized it till this song..

Wow...different to bauhaus' version...Extremely industrial in a very different way to bauhaus! amazing! Sounds like machines in pain.

Well sung, but obviously just a demo, so some may prefer Bauhaus (live?) version. Still good as a document of rare song, thank you!
