Beautiful version. Tony's voice going still is heartbreaking although the distinctive guitar sound is great to hear. Gord's Gold, some of the best tunes ever written.
Rickcee, I respectfully disagree with your statement. At the peak of his career Tony Rice took the role of an acoustic guitar to a level others had only dreamed of, and had the double threat of being one of the most gifted male vocalists in the game at the same time. Rich baritone voice thats still very much missed by many. I've always thought he nailed every Lightfoot tune he performed, they were all beautifully done.
Allison and Union Station are always a treat to hear. Their playing is excellent, and Allison's voice is awesome. They and Tony did a wonderful job on this classic from the master. :)
@aplacetohideaway He's a totally unique talent. There will never be another like him. I wish he'd stop singing these days though....it dampens the greatness he once was. I know that sounds harsh, but it's like a great ballplayer going out in his prime. I'm so glad Gordon Lightfoot recovered so well from his near death bisected aorta, but Gord...no more singing, doood.
thank you bdwright2250 below!! Rice is a close friend of Lightfoot's and his playing on any Lightfoot tune is exceptional..he did a Lightfoot tribute album... this recording is wonderful including Jerry Douglas who is flawless..... sure they could have featured Rice on the solo but its her video and arrangements.. Go Alison!
You people criticizing Rice need to take a reality check, Rice plays straight from his soul spur of the moment, he improves like you breathe or blink. There's no other acoustic guitar player on the planet who can consistently pour there soul into an acoustic guitar and come out with the improvisational purity, tone and character rich hesitations and syncopations as Rice can. The day you can outclass his guitar playing is the day you have the place to criticize him and that day will never come.
@bdwright2250 Couldn't disagree more with your assessment of Rice. He's a good guitar player, a fair singer, and he misses the boat on every single Lightfoot song he attempts. His band is always good, as is he on his instrument, but they never get a good fix on tempo. Usually they're too fast for the amount of words Gordon Lightfoot puts into a lyric. This Alison Krauss rendition is quite nice, and Tony is great on this. I just don't like when he sings. I love Alison's slow bow.
Respond to this video... As usual, Tony plays too much. Too much meandering. Reminds me of the rural version of Al DiMeola. He sounds like he's practicing scales and not adding that much to the record. Tony...either play more tastefully or learn that less can very often be more.
@rickcee I hear plenty of rhythm playing in there too. If you listen to a lot of classic rock you'll hear an awful lot of 'meandering' too. It adds detail.
@bdwright2250 I will agree that Tony Rice is an amazing guitar player, but before you make the statement that he is the only guitar player to pour all of his soul into it, you need to listen to Ron Block.... Ron Block has played some of the most tasteful solos I have ever heard. Then when it comes to bluegrass with a drive you have to consider Josh Williams and Kenny Smith. With that being said, Tony Rice is every guitar players hero!
I'm a mad Tony Rice fan.. but the somewhat dodgy phrasing and lack of fluidity on this particular solo pass would surely have raised the question of doing another take ... no?
Tony im sure would have loved to sing with her but he lost his voice years ago he can barely speak let alone sing. i too wish he could still sing. God bless you Tony .
I absolutely love this version... it is magical... !!!!!
A big thanks to you... !!!

Unforgivable that the director should choose to not show Rice's hands during the solo. Piss poor directing! Alison K. and band are awesome as always.

Yes exactly! :)

Actually, the whole song through the choice of focus is really off! The only time he gets it right is during Jerry's "solo"!

@WillisMcGillicutty His solo was probably (re-)recorded at another time/place, either without cameras or the other musicians.

It sounds like they even cut out part of Tony's solo at 2:46 and bring him back in at 2:53
