Nope - All fully functional. Blades are 6mm thick 9260 high carbon silicon alloy spring steel. The tangs are 22mm where they leave the shoulders at a radiussed transition. They progressively taper down to enter the pommel at 16mm wide x 6mm thick. There are no welds on the tang. The blades are heated in an electric to 870C and then quenched vertically in a tank of paraffin / palm oil blend.
My custom blades are then tempered for two x 1 hour cycles at 350C for a blade hardness ~52Rc. The shoulder area is torched to draw to a spring temper in the low 40s, as it doesn't have to hold an edge. The tang is progressively drawn gets softer & annealled where it enters the pommel for toughness. Bevels continue smoothly to the sharp edge and sharpened by hand tools (Files> sandpaper> stone) & there is no secondary bevels. My swords are custom made to my client's preferences.
Does it have a peened pommel? Thats the main thing I look for in a battle-ready sword, not that threaded bullcrap that needs to be tightened every time you strike with it.
@DarkRagn Oh yeah I totally agree. Thats why I made a longer version called Even Kings Die, and I also did a longer Father's sword called In The Name of Crom; both with 33" blades. The original Atlantean only has about half it's total length sharp.
Arnold! make the end of conan as conan the king! it be a great comeback for you it be huge! i imagine a older conan with a beard but still in great shape but it has to be you in it. you are conan no one els can be him. that would be a great film. talk to John Milius and make this film..
Real swords should have plain guard n pommel. All this fruity etching ruins and art wall hanging crap ruin the look of the weapon. Make the swords for battle not some gay arts show.
@REHconanfan@REHconanfan yes maybe true lol :) I'll make you any type of sword you care to design. These are movie swords made into fully functional pieces of art with historical blade design principles included. But if you have sketches of a Conan sword design to suit the images created your mind as you read, I can make them too. Check out my Fable Blades website for more inspiration.
@harumba2 hi i was wondering, do you sell these marvelous pieces? like, can i order one? if so, what would be the price for one? i bet much since they are hand made, but then again, im still intrested :) please send a comment back, thank you for reading.
@REHconanfan Hi. If you google Fable Blades my website comes up first, and you can see my other creations there. I can make anything you can imagine :)
I don't know if Howard did come up with languages in the way Tolkien did? The actual movie prop for the Father's Sword used english lettering & words. On the atlantean they had made up lettering for an 'unknown' language - there was no meaning ascribed. We just mixed it up a bit: I used Runes - mainly Anglo Saxon, and Jeffrey used Egyptian Heiroglyphs on the Fathers. And Even Kings Die (the Atlantean remodel) I used greek lettering, as Atlantis is based on Greek Myth.
@harumba2 I understand. That's interesting. I think I might try read the books of Howard. I've got the feeling that they have much much more to tell than the films (hehe of course) Besides, I really like the design of these swords.
@TheJallejulle Oh yeah they're great books. It's been some time since I read them but when I was about 15 to 20 I read a whole bunch of them, including several by Robert Jordan and L. Sprague de Camp which were awesome too. They're pretty light duty and easy to pump through. Not like Tolkien in that respect lol
I hope the new film is well done, though not keen on the sword for it :-X
Haha, yeah you get that. It's all good fun :) I also made a longer slimmer version of the Father's sword too. You can see it at my website. Called In the Name of Crom. :) Handles so much better and almost 3 lb lighter than the movie prop.
I saw the vid. GREAT stuff. The handle on the original atlantean was 5.35 in. but the handle on the King of kingdom lost is 6 1/4 in. Was this delibrate? How much lighter do you think the sword would be if the handle was like the original. The sword of Nial is AWESOME by the way
Just to help the rear hand grip, the weight difference would be under 1 ounce I'd say. I can make your one however you like it. I can also do you a Father's Style sword. Email me if you'd like some prices. Cheers
Amazing work. On your website you list the weight of the Atlantean as abou 6 lbs. 9 oz. THis over a pound lighter than Albion's. How did you make it lighter? Is the blade narrower?
Can you etch the blade with the same detail and depth as the original swords? I would love to get a the Father's sword or Atlantean with custom etching.
All in all amazing work. I will buy from you guys soon.
Our starting stock is maybe a little thinner than Albions, at 6mm. I don't hollow grind, I use traditional performance blade geometries. The Barbarian models are only 6lb6oz. While Even Kings Dies is the one at 6lb 9oz, and that is actually 6" longer than the movie swords. However I made it with distal taper, and a better balancing blade taper. Plus Jeffrey managed to make the guard partially hollow to save some unnecesary weight, however the pommel is solid.
cont.d: I guess the main thing is I approached this blade as I do any real performance blade, using traditional geometries. Whereas the movie swords are all for show. Ther's a cutting vid Jeffrey did with one of his - I'll look for it 4U.
As for engraving, that would have to be done professionally. I engraved mine by hand, using Ancient Greek script, being that Atlantis is a Greek myth. I engraved deep using a diamond cutter on a dremel. Jeffrey etched heiroglyphs on his Destroyer using acid.
are those realy made out of metal and also where can I buy one?

Could you do a Stormbringer sword? I'm thinking the measurements on something like that might be tough to pull off.

@pulsare21 John Milius doesn't like Howard's Conan so him making another bad Conan movie is a bad idea.

I find it quite funny that the runes shows english words^^ Isn't there a specific language for this period and place in this story?
