That was one of the best performances by any male singer I have ever seen! And this guy has been with my home town's opera company for so many years and I've never heard him before! What a shame.
I feel bad for this guy it really looks like he's hating singing in this video. His chin is nearly digging into his chest, his veins seem ready to come out, and i've never seen a neck as tense as this in an opera singer. He looks like he's trying to drop a huge shit.
Einfach perfekt interpretiert!
You are all ridiculous. Good singing has nothing to do with the country, the house, the production and especially nothing to do with fame. Fame is nothing but being in the right place at the right time. Yes, talent helps but I am sure that there are plenty of lesser-known singers that could sing circles around the "stars" of the opera world.
This is one of the most beautifull Abendstern I've heard, even though his closed German vowels are too closed off and he sometimes gets off his breath support in an effect to be delicate. A great artist, who could benefit enormously from more consistent lower body support; the way he sings much of the aria is excellent.. This lack of support has become an epidemic in the vocal world today, and most German opera companies don't even care about good singing any more.
In most of the german opera companies they sing better than at the met or covent garden.
His german vowels are good (people know why HE is the most demandes Wolfram of our time! abd YOU want to give him technical advice? Haha, what do you call lower body support, he's a very high baritone (a real baryton-martin" and this aria is in a very uncomfortable tessitura for this type of voice. He does exactly what his voice is able to do, and that is imho the defintion of vocal artistry.
Are you on crack? Listen to the echo in the hall on the 'soft' parts again and tell me he doesn't have support. A very bright sound but I think he's pretty solid all the way around.
I have sung in many of the German houses and I attend operatic performances all the time in Germany and in the states. I would not agree with the blanket statement that you made about good singing in Germany. There are so many variables involved in good singing that one can not make such a statement. Also, have you heard some of the live-singing at the Met? Sometimes, it is atrocious!! I have had heard some excellent singing in Germany by unknown singers.
It's good to know that you've experienced some excellent singing in German houses; I have experienced some excellent singing at the Metropolitan Opera as well. However, singing is NOT the main focus at the Met and I suspect it is not the main focus in Germany either. Carefully re-read my original comment: "...most German companies...don't care about good singing.."
well, i have attended operas (in Germany) that were very well sung and still boring. so i have to agree that other factors, e.g. those you have mentioned, are important for an interesting evening. however, only if those things AND great singing come together something great can happen.
I agree 100%. All of these elements splendidly coming together is what makes opera the most exciting art form to me; too often nowadays, however, the musical part is not given enough attention, and I speak from first-hand experience. The vocal art has generally declined as well.

Wow! This guy is really something else! He sings fantastic and acts very convincing. But he is sinister as if he was taken from one of my nightmares.

bad piano... completely in the neck like Kaufmann´s doing, sounds very artificial.

Wunderbar.

Have you sung in any of the German Opera Houses?
nichtsleezy 2 years ago
No, but I work with dozens of singers who do and also speak regularly with managers, impresarios, and teachers who advise me of the same.

What is the "main" focus then? Or what things are thought of as more important?

Well, what else is part of an operatic production? Stage direction, lighting, scenery, costumes, etc.
