  • Rest in peace Rhino.

  • Wow that really sucks that Larry the guitar player passed away. How sad. :( I will never understand either how they werent world famous. But hey they got airplay back in the day on our local radio station KISS FM-Joe Anthony. They are one of my FAVORITE bands. We have all their albums. Nothing like vinyl!!!

  • R.I.P. Rhino

  • R.I.P Rhyno

  • Viva El Rhino! ☯

  • RIP Rhino, much love...

  • RIP Rhino...

  • RIP Rhino

  • Those dudes made some sweet sweet jams....glad they influenced other musicians and hopefully future bands. RIP Larry ‘Rhino’ Reinhardt

  • You can see where the Foo Fighters got their riff from for All My Life, right?! ;)

  • R.I.P. Rhino, you'll be missed bro. :-(

  • I saw them at he whisky a go go. I thought they would be bigger thn zep. Great show

  • @bigbadaik man they kicked ass!! I wish I couldve seen them. I was only 8 when I heard Sufficeintly Breathless. At the time I loved that song!!

  • This is actually side one of the debut album.

  • I saw the Baton Rouge show on the 1973 tour with King Crimson. They opened with "Distant Sun" & that groove immediately recombined with my DNA. It's been there ever since. I hope CB is still selling copies of this revolutionary mind blowing masterpiece. Better than Captain Crunch.

  • Where is this concert? The damn audience was really lame. I just to jam-out with the first album!!!

  • Their debut album and even this video doesn`t do them justice. I saw them open for Alice Cooper in `72 and they blew everyone away. When I bought the album later I couldn`t believe it was even the same band. Rhino was mesmerizing on that guitar in concert. It didn`t come through in the studio.

  • first video ive ever seen of this band. can't get over that drum intro though! damn, that an awesome groove

  • the eternal question :

what was my arm worth when they took it away ?

  • Sometimes I am proud of the presente times: today Captain Beyond is much more known, admired and respected than in the 70's. It is true, however, that such an album hardly would be made today...

  • Kicks arse big time! Got the 3-D original LP--awesome licks and kicks!

  • The band is Excellent but they needed a better Singer. I hate Rods Evans and have no respect for him. They needed a singer like Gillan or Dio.

  • @Drumguy1988 Rod Evans was awesome on the first Captain Beyond album. And that's the only CB album you need! As to why they didn't make it big, read the article in a recent issue of Classic rock magazine. Rod Evans had no confidence and quite the band several times. That, and the usual suspects (drugs).

  • @TheWolfe666 Have that Album and it's Fantastic.

  • PFFT. Are you kidding. Tons of great bands don't make it big. You can work really hard... fortune also has alot to do with success. Timing and all of it. Really shitty bands make it monstrously big just because they get the marketing support/radio play, and usually the only part of any "hit" song is a really catchy and simple chorus. Pop fans just want to hum something stupid all day that makes them happy. lol

  • This singer got booted out of Deep Purple for Ian Gillan.

  • @Wrathdemon YEP ! GILLAN RULES

  • Hurra endlich gefunden Supergeile Mucke

  • I'll never understand why a band this talented never made it really BIG. Great guitar, vocals, percussion, songwriting; they had it all!

  • WHEN THE MUSIC WAS GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!THE BEST PERIOD EVER!!!

  • Favorite hard rock! Rhino & Rod Evans are peerless.

  • Caldwell & the time changes are ridunculous..

    He is from another world..

  • The only thing I dont like about this video is that Evans sings over the outro guitars - anyone who has the record will know how awesome that bit sounds on it's own.

  • I'm from Orange County (Newport Beach) and when this album came out I had a band called Roundhouse. We were in our late teens to early 20's and had a pretty good local following. The first time I played this album (not CD!) we were totally 'baked' on LSD (not condoning, just a fact). Needless to say we immediately learned the whole album and embarked on a mission to turn others on to this music. Hadn't thought about that in years! Thanks for the post. PS I couldn't even dance forward!

  • I listened to them on 8-track...and I don't mean a studio recorder.

  • esse disco mudou meu espirito.Muito obrigado..nunca saira da minha vida.Faz parte da minha historia, como musico e como amante da musica.

  • I'm amazed that anybody could pull this off live so well! Makes me wish I were around while heavier rock could still be taken seriously, unlike today where there's too much emphasis on trying to look badass than actually playing your way to that status. Imagine how many of the faux-rock bands today would exist if they had this kind of music to compete with. As long as everybody decided to have good taste, that is

  • Masterful album,a true gem in Rock history of the early 70's

Rhino - Ion Butterfly- Bobby Caldwell - Jonny Winter Group

Lee Dorman- -The Doors Rod Evans - Deep Purple

These men went on to perform for hundres of thousands of people. In this group they made only 2 albums before different projects came and splintered Captain Beyond. A Golden Classic still.

    Peace.

  • @PrinceofPeace9957 No...Rhino from Iron Butterfly, Lee Dorman also from Iron Butterfly.

  • What was the guy cleaning up on the stage floor at approx. 7:00 into the video?

Anyway, I didn't know any video existed of CB. This is absolutely great! I always said you can tell the worthiness of a band by how they perform live! This confirms my theory! This sounds as good now as it did in 1972!

  • I have this cd. I found it about 20 yrs ago! I had the 3d album shortly after it came out. One of the best unheard bands ever! If you love Captain Beyond you should check out Armegeddon. The lead singer was Keith Relf of the Yardbirds. They only put out one album, but man what a great album it is! You can get it at Amazon....

  • lee dorman; power bass!

  • According to my vinyl,,,this is "Part One" (got the 3-d one) ,,,,,,,,I traded my coat for this album in '73,,,was really worth it!!

  • This is a hard rock classic much like Lucifer's Friend's first album-Rod Evans (sadly)will never sing again after the fiasco of 1980.

  • Of course, to create timeless music, one must first have the prerequisite of a great drummer. And to the question of why one should jam, I think a better question is why not jam all the time? And the lyrics tend to make playful fun of the hippy age.

  • OK this is going to piss some people off, and it probably should but....

I think live Rod Evans sings a little bit like Steve Miller does when he plays live.

  • @kemicon

I think you are dead on with the Steve Miller comment. I grew up in Marin County, CA where Steve is from. I never liked his voice that much. Loved the music....just not his voice. He just did not seem to be "into" it.

  • @jammie4u Although currently living in Concord, New Hampshire I grew up in Southern California (Newport Beach) From 2000 to 2004 I lived in San Anselmo :) Marin is very nice but expensive!! Anyway, just thought I'd touch base with someone from that particular part of the universe :)

  • @MsSpawn1234

    Cool. :)

  • Space tripping...........

  • Rod Evans come out of hiding.

  • loved it then ...still love it

  • This is some great rock and roll!

  • @j4unumber1 right man ! rock'n'roll will never die !

  • Bought it new in 72. Thought it was cool because it had a 3D album cover. Had no idea it would be my favorite record all these years. One of those records meant to be played in its entirety. No dancing. No conversation. Just listen and take it in.

  • Iron butterfly meets deep purple

  • muthers fom yesterday

  • Whit Witch was ahead of their times. Class of 2000 with George Brawdley on guitar. Saw them many times in South Carolina in the 70's.

  • Capricorn Records had no Idea what to do with them or White Witch( some really good players lost in the dust) Bobby Caldwell was THE drummer at this time.

  • I bought this album in 1973. It was, and still is, too far ahead of it's time. If you have a copy, just place it in a time capsule. It will get discovered in the year 2173 and then begin to top the charts.

  • Catch the show name? Super POP, LOL! I knew maybe 2 people who had the "3D" 1st album and they didn't like "Sufficiently Breathless"! I wore'em both OUT!

  • I bought these albums when they came out, 1973 was a very good year!! I figured I wasnt the only person who knew of this band. Its an honor to see this, thanks.!!!

  • Never heard of these guys, but I have an archaeological interest in early 70s rock. So, thanks for posting, and cheers to all of this band's fans.

  • for sure, there could be no metallica, or anything like it without this band, well, zeppelin aside. many don't know that this was deep purple's original vocalist before ian gillan. he did the 1st 3 purple albums and the single "hush". shame their members shifted so much. they couldn't get a cemented sound. 2nd album stands up to time really well. whatever happened to rod evans? thx 4 post

  • Man Oh man. Does this ever take me back to the god ol' days. I still have the album, belive it or not.

  • Yep this ban are so underrated it's a crime. What an impact these guys could really have made. Anyway it's under the bridge. Impeccable musicians.

  • Their first work is the best rock album of all time. My father showed them to me and... well, it changed my life.

  • This album makes most other rock albums look pedestrian.

  • Best thing I've seen/heard in ages.

  • Never thought I would see this. Mind blowing! Thank you for posting.

  • If there is a God please get old hard rock back.

  • @Eldryzif there is... he gave us youtube...

  • I saw them way back... opened up for Jo Jo Gunne then finished with Alice Cooper... CB was totally underrated from then on... but not by me... this and Suffeciently Breathless... two of my all time favorite albums... great concert... great memory...

  • @barrabus999 ah....Surreptitiously Breakfast! A great LP in its own right.

  • I saw them way back... opened up for Jo Jo Gunne then finished with Alice Cooper... CB was totally underrated from then on... but not by me... this and Suffeciently Breathless... two of my all time favorite albums... great concert... great memory...

  • listen you fuckin lady goo goo gaa gaaa fans... now this is music and learn

  • still hushed!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • my little brother bought this in the 70's for 2 bucks at a bargain bin the record got ruined had been looking for it for years thank god for the net i now have the whole album on c.d. my fav album of all time

  • I like this band Rod evans captain Beyond is thrue

  • El Rhino... Need I say more??

  • They're the Greatest band of all time.

  • Over the years I have listened to this album often enough to know every note. It's amazing that they can reproduce it perfectly-many thanks! Never thought I would get to see them "live".

  • great cd great band...wa ahead of their time, too bad this new generation of kids don't hear this stuff.....they're really missing out

  • @Bluesbarri I do!

  • Back in the day my band played this, Raging River of Fear and Mesmerization Eclipse. We had NO commercial potential but had big fun!

  • @RichardScott1958 I see rhino chose to play the rthym instead of the riff in the album at 216 before the lead solo he was so far ahead of his time .

  • I remember covering this in the 70s. Nobody knew quite what was going on musically. Not exactly a dance number, but at least the band liked it.

  • Good Rockin

    Thanks for sharing

  • Awesome! I CB are just he band fell in love with them when I was a teenager in 1976... Yikes I was a teenager in 1976!

  • nice very good rod evans

  • incredible....I have always love this bands music! it's great to finnaly see some video!

  • Armworth is still one of the all time great anti-war songs from the Vietnam era....

  • Glad Rod was able to have such a great band after Purple.

He had a great voice , too bad he didn't stay in music.

Album still sounds tiptop after all the years.

  • Their music reminds me too much of Hendrix...especially the vocal stylings. TOO MUCH LIKE HENDRIX!

  • AWESOME Nuff said !

  • All of my rock snob friends thought I was a total loser bringing this one home. Since that time I have played it for three generations. All have loved it. Today's metal kids lap this up. Either that or they are being very nice to this old man. By the way, is that baby powder on Rhino's right hand ala Jeff Beck, today?

  • It's a matter of taste, but I prefer the first Captain Beyond album to anything Deep Purple ever did- more musically adventerous/challenging IMO...

  • I love this album, always have, they were ahead of their time, but I bought this album when it came out in "1971" , the 3 D cover and all,... why does it say 1972?

  • Think about what Ritchie, John and Ian thought when they herd Captain Beyond! they had to be invious of how fantastic this lp is. boy did they screw up tossing Rod and Nicky out of DP.

  • Why arent we calling radio stations and demanding this now?

  • Love these guys! Kind of an early super group coming from Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly and Johnny Winter's band. Really happy to find this! Thanks!

  • There hasn't been a year gone by that these tunes haven't popped up for a listen at some point or other. And that's been since '73. Thanks for posting.

  • When you die, this is what you hear if you are fortnate enough to ascend into Heaven.

  • WKTK FM 105.7 Baltimore, man those were the days. I used to hang out at the radio station after school. The DJ's were the best. They loved having us, gave us bumper stickers and iron-on patches. When everyone else was playing Top 40 these guys were playing underground stuff like this. We were so cool.

  • Man they fucking kick ass live. One of my favourite records of all time! Thanks for posting :)

  • shit - this ain't too bad. If I was a teenager in the 70's I would definitely have listened to this in my parents' attic. Not exactly on par with what Deep Purple were doing at the same time though...

  • Great! Much better than Purple. Rod Evans was Purple's original singer-he sang their hit version of "Hush"!!! The guitarist smokes Blackmore...

  • I would have to completely agree with you. Captain Beyond blows the Rod Evans version of Deep Purple way outta the water. I think all the members of this band are incredibly talented, particularly the drummer...

  • That's exactly what I was doin in '72-'73 Used to listen to this station on my little 'ol radio after school- all Metal music-

    WAMU-D.C.-RUSH,MAHOG RUSH, CAPTAIN, ACDC,KISS,AEROSM,DEEP PURPE-AWESOME!

  • Phenomenal.

  • these guy rock i had a cassette tape made from a record but i dont have it any more .......thanks for putting this up i

  • KAAY LITTLE ROCK ARKANSAS 11PM BEAKER STREET WEEKENDS BEAKER THEATER now it's a christian station and yes it was AM....

  • This band was never given adequate "air play" for some reason.

I grew up trying to play to this album. I still have the original "3D" album.

I think that we can all agree that they were a very good band in their genre. The competition was very stiff during this era.

  • Fantastic. If only this band had made it big. Rod Evans was perfect for the line-up. Actually, Willie Daffern was an excellent singer too.

  • Caldwell is tearing up that kit. Such a great album, cinamatic and progressive yet still heavy.

  • From 1968 to 1976 this was the better Rock age.

  • @MrMoralillo from 68 to 76 was a better age of the world

  • @MrMoralillo 1966-1976

  • fu----n awsom musicians for the era!

  • well i think u suk. you probably wasn't born yet and they didnt need an organ. i think they got a year or two on deep purple. it dont matter any way, u still suk!

  • hahaha.

  • @claudiauruguaya You wouldn't know a time signature from a Mini-B (that's a Hammond, dope). I was 17 when this was done, an' is one of th' main reasons I can count 7 or 13 to th' bar. Savvy up or shut up. Just for curiosity's sake,...what kind of stuff do YOU find exempliary? Tony Orlando? Or maybe "The Archies"? I ain't ever made decent money playin' clubs 'cause there are so many goofs out there that'll play for free just to get stage time. My guess is you've never dealt with that.

  • Well..it ain't Stonehenge!

  • I knew a iocal group (where I lived at the time), called Stonehenge, a 'monumental rock' band and the lead guitarist loved Captain Beyond's first lp.

  • The riff where it speeds up is very similar to Black Sabbaths Megalomania ,the part where that speeds up too. Wondered if Mr Iommi had this record

  • Captain Beyond could possibly hold the title for 'best rock LP ever' for their first LP. Of course I have all of their music (on vinyl and CD). We drove to Youngstown once to see them and they cancelled!! Damn!

  • Get out!!! They were playing in Youngstown and I don't remember it.....what a shame. yrrah23, do you remember any specifics of the concert that never was? Like to read about it.

  • Still loving it after all these years. Take a look at BUDGIE album IN FOR THE KILL '74...You'll like it too. Guaranteed...

  • Rod, Aunt Muriel would love to hear from you if you could contact her at Craigentinney.

  • They don´t make em like this anymore, do they... just driping of insperation

  • That . . . was out of hand.

  • Outstanding!! BRAVO~thx 4 posting. Got their 2 first albums on CD's but never saw them on video before...They really kick ass...

  • badd ass fucking solo !!!!

    thankss for posting

  • I loved this band, and had the lp back in the day.

    Still listen to it occasionally.

  • this is awesome. thanks for posting

  • one of my all time favorite bands. after watching this video i now know the lyrics for Myopic Void.......I.....no longer.....saw color........only grey, only gray.....I......

  • So what was my armworth? (anyway)

  • GREAT POST THANX !

  • Dancing Madly Backwards (On a Sea of Air) 1st album. Rod Evans on vacals-Deep Purple's first lead singer, Rhino-guitar, Lee Dorman-Bass (both from Iron Butterfly) and Bobby Caldwell Johnny Winter Band, on drums.

  • thanks for th post of this lance, it'sgreat to finnaly see this awesome band live...got the album in-73 when i was 16 years old.... thank God i was young in the late 60's and 70t's :)

  • haha lucky bastard

  • Great Video!Clean sounding audio track found on this Great Vintage Video of 1 of the Best Bands of days gone by! Thanks for sharing it!

  • not to sound ignorant but who is still alive from this band? I saw them in a National Guard Armory in Rockford Illinois back in the day. What a great band they were. Underrated no doubt, but great non the less. Thanks for the memories.

  • Rod Evans lives in the New England area but no longer doing anything musically....

  • hadn't listened to this for ages but dug it out again today

pure brilliance from start to finish - great LP and awesome footage of the band in action there

    what a drummer!!

  • Comment removed

  • Where is Rod Evans today?

  • Bobby Caldwell has to be one of the best drummers in rock history. He really gets into it. Very rare that the drummer is the center of the music usually they just sit in the back. This guy leads the band from the drum throne. And with a pink shirt no less.

  • This album and Sufficiently Breathless were

dedicated to Duane Allman and Berry Oakley

    respectfully.

  • Along withLucifers Friend, Buffalo and Warhorse, Captain Beyond were the most underrated Hard Rock/Proto Metal band of the 70's, truly awesome.

  • thanks for th post of this lance98541. my neighbors boyfriend gave me this record in 1973 when I was 13. Ididn't leeave my room for days. i lost the album someway along life's journey but found the CD Import in the 80's. I still to this day turn them on to people that have never heard of them. it's great to hear it live! I never got to see them in person but there was a Dallas area band in the late 70's that pulled off a pretty good tribue. Long Live Captain Beyond!

  • Love it...love it...Where did the 30 years go? It takes me back to when music was truly magical!

  • one of my all time favorite albums. Allways wished i had seen them. I hop you know how much I appreciate you posting this.!!!!!

Music will never be the same,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • first time I did window pane and tripped to this record very obsecure thanks! I have a cd from japan of this rcord that I pad 50 buck for in 1990!

  • Gwen, first time tripped to window pane wasn't to this record but i did have a live conversation with a radio disc-jockey...without a phone!

  • Wow!

  • capain is one of the few holy grails in hard rock music. under appreciated as they are, it does not change the fact that this super group made up of iron butterfly's, dorman and reinhardt, johnny winter's bobby caldwell, and deep purples's rod evans are about as dangrous of an adult sound since roy gallagher.. love it

they went beyond (hence the name possibly) normal great rock by adding other deminsions of sounds and dynamics. get their first ablum and you''ll this piece of the holy grail.

  • @mmusicmann Roy gallager,,,,,,,,- Rory gallager ,,and I agree, they were the wave of the future.........I traded my coat in the winter time, ('72), for this album and it was the 3D cover,,, it was worth the trade!

  • @mmusicmann Actually it's RORY Gallagher.

  • @mmusicmann you, sir, an articulate historian! Well stated!!!!

  • Great to see this stuff showing up. This has been a favorite for years nex to KE9 and One of a kind - fantastic drumming.

  • Bobby Caldwell Also Played With Johnny Winter at The "Live Album" -1971...really great...oh...and the opening line of the album it's a shout of Johnny and a fuckin' great solo of Bobby...

  • So what was my arm worth when they took it away?

  • I just downloaded the album this song comes from. KICKASS Man. Bobby Caldwell Amazing.
