This movie was deep. It was a psychological thriller that takes the viewer through the mind of Natalie Portman's psychosis. Contrasted against the intensity of competitive Ballet, this was definately a unique and engaging experience.

Honestly, I don't think there was any reason for two of the scenes in this movie; the lesbian sex scene and the scene where the old guy is hitting on natalie portman by touching himself and making knocking noises (which, if that were me, I would have whacked him with my purse, called him a perv, and left). It seems like the whole movie was very perverted and gross. But then, that's just my opinion. And maybe i'm just being uptight. Meh, whatever.

It happens with girls but its called electra complex and is normally for the father but not typically sexually attracted. But in the case of the movie Natlie's character had an Oedipus complex. And her mom was sexually abusing her as it is.

I thought this movie was complete and utter bullshit! As a muscian, I know what it's like to be in a competative enviornment. However, this movie was just melodramatic! I don't fucking cry when I don't get solos and I don't go mad when I have to play them! This movie was so fake! The ballet director should've gotten his ass fired, the skank should've gotten fired when she came in late, and Nina took her roles WAY too seriously! She was just the Swans, not a fucking empress.
@AuroraCelest You know it's not actually about dancing right? It's about what's going on in Nina's mind as a fragile, 'sweet girl' who falls off the edge.
I think the big deal was that Nina wasn't mentally sound. And by the sounds of it, she's had similar breakdowns before.
I am also a musician and I know I have cried and was extremely depressed when I worked hard practicing to get a solo part only to not get it in the end. I never took it as far as she did of course, but it can happen. And it's not really controllable either.
I'm glad there are few directors who still think the core of a good movie is the story and this one is a good example. It has visual effects only when the script needs them and that's how it should be.
I hope this movie achievements make us realize that CGI creatures, fire, explosions, tsunamis and space robots will never replace the importance of the storytelling art.
My mom and I went to go see this movie in theaters. During the more...provocative scenes...we both got uncomfortable.

I thought this movie was complete and utter bullshit! As a muscian, I know what it's like to be in a competative enviornment. However, this movie was just melodramatic! I don't fucking cry when I don't get solos and I don't go mad when I have to play them! This movie was so fake! The ballet director should've gotten his ass fired, the skank should've gotten fired when she came in late, and Nina took her roles WAY too seriously! She was just the Swans, not a fucking empress.

I think the big deal was that Nina wasn't mentally sound. And by the sounds of it, she's had similar breakdowns before.
I am also a musician and I know I have cried and was extremely depressed when I worked hard practicing to get a solo part only to not get it in the end. I never took it as far as she did of course, but it can happen. And it's not really controllable either.
Simply put, she was mentally unsound.

I'm glad there are few directors who still think the core of a good movie is the story and this one is a good example. It has visual effects only when the script needs them and that's how it should be.
I hope this movie achievements make us realize that CGI creatures, fire, explosions, tsunamis and space robots will never replace the importance of the storytelling art.
