I've meet Mike at shows in Orlando, Fl (Sapphire Supper Club) in 1990 - 1999; From the Minute Men, Fire Hose to his solo career, I've always greatly admired his works in creating punk-rock with the Minute Men. But specially his collaboration with Carla Bozulich, that was my greatest of influence.
i think this is an interpretation of what dj wanted to achieve in the original. fair play firehouse they brought out more of the music but lost some of the lyrical meaning
YOU GUYS ARE FUCKING SNOBS, who gives a fuck who wrote the song? So what if in YOUR OPINION the Minutemen are better than Firehose...? Get the fuck over it, get educated, grow up, and learn to like something --- or not---- being critical of shit just to criticize it only annoys us and makes you sound like an asshole. BTW, great song!
@seekauwilfinda I myself prefer fIREHOSE... just because I heard of them first. Next, I got to enjoy Minutemen. Both have Mike Watt, and he seems to be a big pull. Ed Crawford from Ohio rocks, and God Bless D. Boon. The story how fIREHOSE is nearly as interesting as the music these two bands made.
If I'm not mistaken the silent guy on the left is Nels Cline Guitarist supremo,
The original song is a great thing and the fIREHOSE version just shows the innate brilliance of the song, they don't improve it, you can't improve it, but through their own singular interpretation they show just how good a song it is.
daneil's version is way better......... i just don't get it the minutemen were amazing and firehose well isnt even half as good... not trying to be mean.. only making an observation...

What a nasty man and nasty boy. How the hell he milked the cow lying down with bucket in a horizontal position. Shame on these nasty people who made this video.Theyll go straight to hell.
Why do cats that normally play Telecasters always do videos using a Les Paul? Noticed the same thing with a couple minutemen videos with D.Boon. I guess Kids will think its country or something Gotta have a gold-top to get on eMpTyVee.
thanks for posting. depressing? lotsa things are. i don't find this that depressing..it's a visual to go along with a GREAT song as performed by fIREHOSE.
Astoundingly great band. Saw them in 1987 with X and Jerry Lee Lewis at the Universal Ampitheatre in Hollywood. I was blown away and saw them more than a dozen times. Incredible catalogue of music. Also saw them at McCabe's in Santa Monica -- acoustic. Watt, Ed, and George...what can you say? True greatness. The true "Watt-esque" flannel shirt has a diagonal pattern on the pockets that differs from teh rest of the shirt. A small detail, but crucial. Watt was way ahead of that grunge fashion.
It WAS an awesome bill. I was there for X, but was pleasantly surprised by firehose. In between, Ed said, "If we look out of place here, it's because we are." He was referring to the spacious digs of the Universal, which was quite a contrast to dive bars. My favorite firehose song that night was "Operation Solitaire," played with incredible feeling. They played most of "If'n" that night. X was supposed to play Breathless with Jerry, but "the killer" had left. Exene was pregnant if memory srvs.

Daniel's genius produced the original, and it is great. Watt's interpretation is rich, melodic, beautiful. I love them both.

Well, if I just watched that video I should be aware since he gives credit in the interview. But, The Daniel Johnston version pales in comparison.

MTV censors/bans videos for ridiculous reasons....I'd like to know the reason for this video. I think it left a lot to the imagination.
