  • I watched this as a massive Manics fan in 1994, aged 14, and I thought: he is so cool,

Now I am the interviewer's age, I am watching this thinking: for fucks sake, cheer up you miserable bastard.

  • i didn't know thom yorke was a scene queen. richey is lovely. the loveliest.

  • i'm not crying i've just got hayfever.....

    happy birthday richey <3

  • Paul King is a Douche! lol

  • Paul King talks like a commercial airline pilot

  • I'm studying music and looking to make a career in it but I'm now in love with the idea of making one perfect record and then disappearing.

  • Fair enough

  • I love the Manics but am i the only person on this planet who thinks Richey was an egotistical, self-important cock?

  • @Boidert probably, yes

  • @Boidert he just was a unfortunate person...that explains his disappearance

  • i think richey might have been a bit depressed and pessimistic

but maybe i'm just reading to much into what he is saying...

  • Richey! I wish I could hug him and let him know how much his really broken lyrics mean to me and have always! I won't sorry RIP because its so crass! Altough he probably liked crass! N x

  • He looks like a young Eddie Izzard if only he could speak clearly

  • Has someone been putting full stops in that announcers autocue?

  • Richey and James are probably the most shy low confident musicians iver ever seen.

  • @Sk0osH You're sure?

  • I would LOVE to find richey and just talk to him...

  • I've had some experience with depression and Richey sounds seriously sick in this. :(. He sounds a bit better towards the end but my gosh, it's like he's struggling to talk even in the beginning...was knowledge of depression that bad in the Nineties that people couldn't tell how sick he was?

    Also wtf Thom Yorke!

  • @sorathehero82 It's hard to figure out that you are depressed when you don't have anything to compare your depression with. As for your question, I would say knowledge of depression is still not very comprehensive.

  • "makin' a record" but I don't sing or play anything on them

  • @ChristopherJRobin and thats all there is to making a record?

  • your dog dies.

  • Believe me, kids. Thom Yorke really did look like that in 1993 :)

  • I don't profess to know a lot about Richey, or indeed the Manics in general, but you can tell how bright this chap is just by listening to him talk..

  • Richey's off his tits.

  • he seems to be so lost, and that voice...

  • Bloody hell. Is that Thom Yorke at the end of the clip?

  • @tomd2103 omg, i hope it's wig not his real hair.

  • I just want to Hug him, and it is so sad that he said barely few bands make huge m, but then manicscgot huge when he went missing :(

  • Why do interviewers always seem to find his unhappiness comical? Quite upsetting, really. Anyway, God bless you Richey.

  • What is with Thom Yorke?

  • I think he's still alive, I think he just got fed up and ran off, 14 days after he went missing there was CCTV of him so I don't rec he dead, he's proble other side of the world or something

  • @classicbritpop Difficult, without a passport, though. And the footage is of the car, near a notorious suicide spot, not actual footage of him jumping into a banana boat, and sailing into the sunset, or anything like that. You're quite right, though. He could very well still be alive, however, I personally, seriously doubt it.

  • I just want to give him hug

  • That is well fake 'crowd noise' played over it....weird. Enough to make you have a paranoia attack

  • psycho

  • richey edwards and graham coxon are very similar i find.

  • He had a slight speaking disorder, so to speak? Sweet interview altigether!

  • @serpentchimera what do you mean with speaking disorder?

  • @serpentchimera It's called a welsh accent, not a 'speaking disorder'

  • @serpentchimera

Richey didn't have a speaking disorder.

Also, I don't know why everyone thinks he's really out of it in this clip. He sounded like this a lot. He's completely coherent and knows what he's saying. He's a little relaxed, has a few drinks in his system, but I don't think he's really on anything.

  • @thebobbseytwins My bad. I'm not into Welsh accent.

  • This is a great interview with richey,no bullshit always the truth,so wish he was still around the music world would be so much more intersting,he's a genius, always in our thoughts butt!:-)

  • Poor bloke. He was far too nice for this world.

  • He's just so sweet.

  • Comment removed

  • I am not gay, but I am in love with Richey.

  • @Tommo6300 It's natural! He is sexy as hell!:)

  • Comment removed

  • Fucking dick head interviewer i want to kill him.

  • His voice is so so fragile..Everyone should have some richeyness in their soul..The world would be so much better and deepful. Although he seemed to look at the negative side of the world but thats just a sign that he adored a beautiful world where everyone would enjoy life. He seemed to be a very lovable person who got caught in a very dark trap.

  • @JormaX deepful eh?

  • so sweet

  • Comment removed

  • Even when he's talking about depressing things, I find his voice so soothing it lulls me to sleep. I met him with my sisters randomly when we were on holiday when I was about 4, they were huge manic fans but I didn't have a clue who he was. He was so sweet and lovely (even though I think he was pissed off we were bugging him) I fell in love with him. I'm just so sad I didn't know who he was until I was older and I was so sad when I found out what happened to him. He was a truly amazing person.

  • richey is all fucked up..

  • he's drunk

  • "As you get older your life definitely gets more miserable. The people you grow up with die, your grandparents die, your parents die, your dog dies. Your energy diminishes. There's less books to read, there's no more groups to discover. You just end up a baron wasteland, just trying to find something new, which never really occurs". I love him so much. He speaks so much sense. It must be hard for people like him to live in a world so full of ignorant people. I hope he's happy now. <3

  • thats my nabour!

  • god this guy is so gay

  • @gargano3000 And you just love it ;)

  • @SuperMegabar lol i do this guy was a genius who felt the world too much and it didn't bother to feel him back love u rich x

  • @gargano3000 Ironic. I just looked at your video's and you say ''Manic Street Preachers are the shittiest band on the face of the earth''

  • @SuperMegabar they are now it's been proven

  • @gargano3000 Proven? please, Journal for Plague Lovers is one of their best albums!

  • @gargano3000 no not at all please do me a favour go put gt on and comeback an tell me they aint well an truly lost it, right after richey went they turned into like oasis and the verve one of those shit 90s bands that appealed to drinkers and uni wankers too

  • @gargano3000 Haha, look i have nearly everyone of their albums and i can say that yes, they aint as good as their 1st 3 albums but, they're still better than most bands out now days. Their new album aint that good yes, but they even said that was their last shot at Mass Communication. They should be making less commercial songs on their next record.

  • You can't help but find Richey endearing. It must be how soft spoken he is, even when he says the most over the top, eccentric things he comes off as utterly sincere.

  • Yeah! Nothing wrong with not wanting to be a rockstar if you really don't want to play that game! Plenty more to take your place.

Richey would have been an awesome teacher or professor. A deep thinker, that's for sure. Xxoo

  • Thom's hair! Brilliant!

  • Gotta love Richey :)

  • I love him... so so much.

  • "i recognise you from your dubious past"

  • Make a record that encapsulates a time (The Holy Bible), then go live with his dogs on the coast... Whose to say that isn't what he did?

  • that interviewer is infuriating.

  • The host is presenting like he's an airplane pilot.

  • Is he high or something?

  • @thewickedzirenita He's not high, he's anorexic and that makes you speak like you're stoned, very slowly and spaced out.

  • Interesting to hear Richey say that they wanted to make a record that encapsulates a mood and a time and then bye bye, go live on the coast with his dogs forever. Maybe the Holy Bible was that record for him.......

  • @littlebabynothin Must have been.

  • Maybe Richey should hang with Jersey Shore. Mike 'The Situation' would cheer him up no problem, "Watch out for the grenades Richey!'. Afterwards, the pair could hang out with the land-mines in the jacuzzi. Seriously though, he is the backbone of the emotionally crippling 'The Holy Bible'.

  • Hard to belive MTV used to feature actual stars of rock'nroll like RIchey Edwards.

  • was richey gay?

  • @peehpeeh no. probably asexual

  • He's so like Graham Coxon, it's unreal.

Except for the guitar playing ability. And dress sense. And politics.

But it's especially strange that their voices are so similar. South Wales is NOT Colchester.

  • @ZZKe7 I know what u mean. Richey & Graham are my two favourite people. Have u seen the No Distance Left to Run movie? very sweet

  • @ZZKe7 I've always thought this, but never come across somebody else who also thinks this! Soft spoken and vague, alcoholism, dreamily pessimistic, intelligence, likes own solitude. Pale, dark eyes + hair, skinny.

  • love you richey xx

  • If I can offer my take on this interview is that Paul King is being more or less ironic with Rich. Paul was probably with Ray Cokes the best part of the old MTV. I don't think he really was after hurting Richey's feelings. This was a interview where the both of them was a bit drunk or so. My 20 cents.

  • MTV interviewers fucking sicken me. I bet they sleep like fucking babies at night

  • @andymaq At least they are all old or dead now

  • It was awesome up until the end.

    Then it was effing EPIC!

    THOM WTF!

  • His voice is really soothing.

    :( which makes it sadder

  • Thom Yorke at the end looks like a Motley Crue reject

  • I like the interviewers expression during that rant.

  • Lol - 'roxxanne'

  • From where is taken the clip in beginning? Please, please tell me someone!

  • @grafiene its the you love us music video

  • @calythethird that is, the original video, for the single released on heavenly records

  • great never seen this before iam like everybody on here its so sad you can see that hes ill

  • What the fuck is wrong with that reporter guy? He's just smiling and laughing like Richey isn't talking about depression. That fucking bastard. But I love Richey in this interview, even if he does sound kinda depressed. He looks cute too. R.I.P .........if he is dead......

  • @rainbowsfordays The interviewer is hilarious!

  • look at Thom!!!! what the hell is that?!!! i have to say the interview with richey made me depressed but seeing thom with that haircut was great. lol.

  • Fuck man Richie is clearly talking about how depressed hes feeling and the interviewer is just smiling and laughing as he does so. What a cunt

  • Nice interview with Richey. This is the first time I am listening to Paul King speak.

  • Damn, Richey's interviews always make me sad. He's adorable intelligence and view on this world is something really depressing. I don't know why. I think he's one of the most honest persons who I have seen in music industry.

Its weird to see Thom so young here. Radiohead, along with MSTP, has always been one of my favourites.

  • This makes me cry.

We always lose the..most amazing people.

Its hard to believe that..he's gone...:*[

  • Haha Thom Yorke really looks like a cunt at the end of this video.

  • Believe it or not, this is the first ever Richey interview I've ever watched. He's so mysterious and wonderful.

  • I want to comment on Richey's interview, but Thom Yorke made me laugh too much :)

  • Is it me or is Paul king really leaning into him. Or might be the camera angle

  • Richey - the only man i have ever loved

  • Just when I thought no one could top Richey's misery, we see a Thom Yorke acceptance speech.

  • Terribly sad that he was going through the routine of the Interview with some random twat, and trying/not trying to get his point across with someone really bland and pointless, but who would possibly get the band some sales? It's just very gloriously sad.

  • he talks different to anybody ive ever heard

also lol at thom yorkes hair

  • Notice how Richey looked up a lot in interviews? It's almost like he was seeing something we weren't, either that or he really really struggled to look people in the face.

It's a shame we may never know what happened to him but by god he was one all- round beautiful piece of work :'(

  • @greenheather Maybe he is drugged? If not he is like me and just gets nervous around people. But then how could he stand going up on stage?

  • @greenheather let's assume he struggled with eye contact and he swam with the fishys.

  • That interviewers a right nob, ppl here are right, he can't just allow the interview to be a conversation.

  • I love how vague his voice sounds, like he's on a totally different planet. <3

  • @KittyLilyy i want to be there, whatever planet that is x

  • @KittyLilyy thats cause he was

  • minicrumpet- thankyou, you put what I feel when I see/read interviews with Richey into words far more eloquently than I ever could.

That combination of wonder and sadness is a rare thing. We can all see how beautiful and special he was it's a just a pity it seems he couldn't. -le sigh-

  • isn't it interesting how he speaks such sad things while the interviewer smiles, seeming really amused?most people know how to talk only to ppl who are entertaining.hence they can't appropriately take part in a slightly meaningful/honest conversation..

  • @aliaemar22

That seems to be the case with nearly every Richey interview I've ever seen. The interviewers don't know how to react, so they often make bad jokes or smile stupidly into the camera and laugh nervously the entire time. I also get a feeling many of them didn't think he was "4REAL" and that it was all a part of some sort of tortured artist/genius act.

  • good choice rich!

  • Such a dear little Welsh baby.

  • nice hair thom

  • Happy Birthday Richey!

    xxx

  • Hard to believe MTV used to exist a music-oriented network.

Richey always manages to leave me equally inspired and heartbroken. Perhaps that's what he was going for. Perhaps.

    -alex.

  • @minicrumpit It IS hard to believe that MTV used to have music once upon a time. And particularly music this good.

  • had to sign in to say this... THE INTERVIEWER IS A CUNT! A COMPLETE SMUG CUNT - FUCK OFF! Richey Edwards FTW!!!!!! x

  • Have some manners! That's 80's hitmaker and singer of the popular song "Love and Pride" Yes!................... Paul King you're talking about. No respect

  • what a legend!!!

  • Do you think he went to the coast? He did make that perfect album (Holy Bible) that may be why he left. He always preferred the quiet life...

  • @jamesmullard

Richey didn't feel it was the perfect album though. He was still striving for something better. I don't know if he would ever be truly satisfied with anything he did. He said he just wanted to write the perfect lyric.

  • He could really speak, that Richey. Good guy.

  • Wow......Never seen this before. Richey always came out with such amazing, speeches, summing up pretty much everything in one or two sentences or even a few words. Also, he looks so beautiful here, like usual. So lovely and polite too. Love this interview, thanks for uploading (:

  • M dad met the manics before they were famous, my dad and them were exchanging demo tapes when my dad had a small time band in the late 80's and we have one of their old demo tapes in the attic :) :)

  • At 6.08 "Radiohead suck!" Hahahahaha

Saw this when it was first broadcast. Thanks for making a diminished man happy/sad by uploading it.

  • I have to agree with Richey's philosophy about life. If he was still around I think I would have really gotten along well with him. You can see the guy like "ahhh" when Richey was talking about life geting worse all the time, he just didn't know how to take him lol Us fans do though

  • Aaagh! I love this!

  • Richey!! 4ever He's so cute when he requests the police video

  • i think maybe he's a little drunk?? maybe???

  • Thom Yorke looks really the worse for wear at the end of the vid

  • Got to say thanks for putting this up, archive stuff indeed, and now they are one of those millionaire bands. Though they have kept their dignity and passion, thankfully.

  • Haven't seen this one before either - Richey seems really spaced out - wonder how long before he went awol that this interview took place????????????

  • Is that Radiohead at the end?

  • lovely! thank you! i always feel slightly saddend hearing richeys views sometimes

  • As StepmothersTeeth I thought I'd seen every Richey interview out there but apparently not. Thank you so much for posting.

  • I guess it's first interview from THB era I've ever seen :D P.C.P. jacket :D Cool thing !!! Thank you !

  • woW! just when i thought i'd seen every richey Interview.. Thanks 5/5

  • thank you for uploading this!

  • Never seen this before, thanks!!! I guess this was early 94?
