Everybody who tries Whitney Houston usually gets torn up by the judges for such a performances, especially by Randy. But Melinda Doolittle was so great that Randy actually suggested it for her! As if that weren't amazing enough, she's the only one on American Idol to ever pull off Houston.

I found this video of Melinda by mistake, haven't seen American Idol since season 1, haven't heard Whitney Houston sing this song, and let me tell you, this Melinda Doolittle, on her own, is a fantastic singer! I couldn't compare it to anything as I never heard this song before and I must say Melinda should be famous! Great singing!

That's right, this song was out of her vocal range, but she still made it sound beautiful! She did not choose this song herself, never would have! You can't blame her for Randy's song choice. I really, really would like to hear what mess Jordin would make if she tried to sing ANY of Melinda's songs, like I've got rhythm or I'm a woman... She can't sing difficult, up tempo songs with any twist in them. But that's ok, she can keep on singing Disney tunes with lots of high notes, that's her genre.

You are confused with a couple of things there. Melinda's voice is never thrown off, she just isn't a soprano like Jordin is. That doesn't make Jordin better, it just makes her different. Have you noticed that Jordin can't sing low notes? Melinda can, because she's an alto. Randy tried to mess with Melinda with this (seemingly impossible) song choice, but she nailed again, because she's a PRO. Not a bad performance all season. Bow down, people!
