I just talked to a fellow Navy fan, and what he told me leads me to believe even more that Paul Johnson will remain at Navy forever. This fan said that, no matter how much money other schools offer him(even more than 3 million a year), Navy will offer him at least a matching amount. They love him that much! And, in addition, with Paul Johnson's no-nonsense style of coaching, he would much rather coach Navy players than thugs who like to showboat, taunt, do drugs, and commit crimes. Who agrees?
Well, I was wrong! And Paul Johnson did love it at Navy. However, the only thing that made him decide to move on was his desire to win BCS Title, which he couldn't do at Navy. But I have news for you. At a school like Navy, five straight bowls and five straight seasons of eight or more wins is as good as winning a BCS Title at a school that is an easy sell for talent. Navy Football may not be as good, but don't count them out. By the way, what is the status on Kirk Ferentz' job?
Wow, dude, chill out. I greatly respect and admire Navy and know how hard it is to win at a service school (Army, Air Force, and Navy) and Paul Johnson is my favorite coach (I LOVE option football - that's why I am an Iowa fan watching Navy's 2003 season highlights on youtube). I wasn't knocking Navy and I'm sure PJ did love Navy, but he would've surely left for an upper level team in a BCS conference. Kirk is feeling a little more heat, but his 3 straight #8 finishes and 2 Big Ten titles...
from 2002-2004, along with 4 consecutive New Years Day Bowls (1 BCS) is keeping some the heat down from where it may have been had he not had that run. This season is huge for him and the program. We don't have any sure losses on the schedule, but could lose about 6 or 7 of our games at the same time. Don't think you were asking that question seriously, but there you go anyway. I wasn't trying to knock on Navy or PJ, but just stating that your comment was funny looking back. Best of luck!
Hey Iowafan2! I am so sorry that I took you the wrong way, and I apologize. Just like you, I love option football. Maybe Paul Johnson being at GT and showing how it WILL work at the higest level will lead to other coaches using it. By the way, do you think that PJ's success at Navy may be the best example ever of a coach doing more with less. Of course, Tom Osborne ran it for years at Nebraska and Lou Holtz did a great job using it at Notre Dame. Now, I am hoping that Ferentz can do it!
gymman, don't worry about it. It's instinct for fans to defend their school/team because there's so much pride involved. I'd be lying if I said I haven't snapped back before in my defense of the Hawks or misinterpreted what people have meant by their comments (especially online). I'm far from qualified to say if what PJ did at Navy is the best example EVER of doing more with less. There are so many instances and things to take into account. I'll use Iowa and Ferentz as an example (as that's...
what I know best). In the aforementioned run from '02-'04, many said he was great a doing more with less. That's true to an extent. He developed players that weren't all that highly touted out of HS and made the good (some great). That said, those players ended up actually being very good, very talented players even though they weren't highly touted recruits (guys like Bob Sanders, Robert Gallery, Dallas Clark, etc.), so maybe they were actually solid prospects from the start that were just...
I say that, no matter what happens in 2008, Kirk will be back in 2009. However, could it be that, if they don't make a bowl in 2008, 2009 will be bowl-or-bust for Kirk?
That's very likely the case if we don't go bowling again this year. I agree that he is safe this year no matter what, however. I just can't imagine that we wouldn't make a bowl this year - we have a pretty easy schedule and I think we'll have an improved offense (can't be worse than last year) and a pretty stout defense. Man, I can't wait for football to start!
I can't wait for football to start, either. And, although the Big Ten is slightly down right now, I know that it will be much better soon. Ohio State will be great as long as Tressel is there, Michigan will thrive under Rodriguez' offense, and, as long as Ron Zook is recruiting like he has been, Illinois will keep on winning. Michigan State is recruiting great and will get even better, and, believe it or not, ditto for Minnesota. And, Iowa will be back too! Can't wait for football!
underrated by the recruiting "experts"/services. I do think that PJ developed players very well at Navy (especially given the limitations and disadvantages he had in many aspects compared to most D1 schools), but I also think his scheme (X's & O's wise) and play calling may have gotten more out of his players than most (if not any) coach(es) I can remember. I, too, hope to see more option football back at the D1 level (Rich Rodriguez is doing it to an extent, but I'd prefer the "old school"...
option run from under center rather than the spread, but that's the new trend now) and hope that PJ can have success at GT and show that it can still work. I'd love to see Iowa incorporate more option into their offense, but we're more of a "pro" style offense and don't really have the personnel to run it now - oh well.
Guess what, everyone! It was announced that Navy and Maryland will play again in 2010 to kick off the season at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. From that point on, although nothing has been planned, they should play every year in Baltimore or Landover! Amen?

Hahaha!! That's funny for a lot of reasons and it's even funnier now looking back at what happened (Johnson to GT).
