HI Buddy, great job for just doing it off the cuff. Can you tell me if you video with the lens and how that worked for you? Focus is manual I know but did you find it to be of semi pro quality and zoom with your camera? You forgot to mention which type of camera your using there.
great review. I just got the lens and plan to use it for some surfing and outdoor water sports and nature/hiking footage. Any tips for a wanna bee photographer?
Although the 70-200 has a wider aperature at the lowest focal length, it does not necessarily follow that the longer focal lengths will have wider aperatures than the 100-400. Another main advantage of the 100-400 is the slide action as opposed to twist, time to focal length tradeoff is usually worth it for wildlife and sport photographers. Lens build and quality would be exactly the same as they have the same amount of elements, although there may be some barrel distortion
Actually you're wrong, well certainly in the case of Canon L lenses.
Canon have five 70-200mm L lenses and they are either rated f2.8 or f4.0 these aperatures remain the same throughout the entire focal range (hence why they only quote the single f. number as opposed to the (eg.) 100-400mm L lens which is f4.5 - f5.6; meaning that the widest aperture ranges between f4.5 & f.5.6 depending on the focal length.
A few things...try it..put a zoom lens on your camera. Set your camera to Av(Aperature biased) keep the lens at it's shortest focal length and then open the aperature up to the max. Try the same thing at the longest focal length. You'll see these two values coincide with those on the box. Now try closing the aperature down past the values on the box at any focal length. I think you'll find you'll hit the lowest aperature value your camera is capable of. Cheer loneboarder7
The videographer didn't claim to be an expert photographer, and neither is exodusfman800 based on his reasoning for purchasing the 70-200. There are many reasons you would want to use a Telephoto zoom other than sport/action photography. If you want a wider range in focal length a 100-400mm lens might suit your cause.
Huge thanks for posting this unboxing. It is one of the only videos on all of youtube about the 1-4. Shame you didn't keep it long enough to make a proper review.
I'll be picking mine up within the next month. It's replacing my EF-S 55-250 IS. I can't wait!

Wow...it took you 10 minutes and 18 seconds to unbox this lens and say that it's big, heavy, and slow? This was a huge waste of time. I love how you say, "I know, I am just so amazing," when in reality, you're just a conceited little kid with a lot more money than you know what to do with and have no real understanding of photography. You're apparently so amazing that you buy lens without knowing what their intended purposes are. If I could give this video a 0 star rating, I would.
It's a unboxing, not a review. I just told you what I initially thought of it. And yes, I know what the purpose of the lens is. After using it for two weeks I figured it wasn't worth the money, seeing that I wouldn't be using it as much as another lens I could have bought for the price. Thanks for the feedback though.
...Sarcasm is also almost impossible to get across when you're one man talking to a camera. Hence why you thought I was serious when I said "I'm so amazing."
hey so u didn't like the lens and returned it right? for the 80mm 1.2L ??? what didn't you like about the lens cos i was going to get this lens or the 70mm to 200mm 2.8L lens
the main reason was that I figured I wasn't going to use it as much as i should, seeing how I spent so much money on it. I also saw it to be a little slow, but if you're going to be using it primarily outdoors, that shouldn't be a problem.
He didn't like this lens because he bought an f/4.5-5.6 aperture lens thinking it was going to perform like it was an f/2.8 and because his weeny arms have a hard time holding this lens. My 70-200 f/2.8L is great though. If you're shooting just sports/action, get the non-IS version because you shouldn't be going below 1/60s anyway. I have the IS version because I use the lens for a lot more than just sports. I hope that helps!
i like how it looks like you did this video in a broom closet ... and that you occasionally stumble through the descriptions, and trail off at the end of your sentences... classic
i would never have know you planned it. you are a master, very entertaining indeed.
in the future, if you put the video camera about another meter or two farther away, i might be able to see the lens on a consistent basis, thanx
bummer, I wish I could see some shots with this lens. How is the focusing speed on this?
Also, we don't have that cool 2 week trying out thingy here in Japan. Once you buy it, you buy it. Which makes me wonder, what happens to the ones that are returned... Do they just put it back on the shelves and sell it as new?? what the deal?
The autofocus works great, it's fast. The shutter is pretty slow though... Indoors it's at least a second or two, unless you have tons of light. Outdoors it works pretty good :)
I'm not sure what happens to the ones returned. You would think they would be checked out pretty good, before being restocked.
I don't have a flickr, I do have a DeviantArt though...it's under CrushingSteve as well. There's a link on my profile here for you.
Thanks for getting back.Yeah I guess it's not the best lens for low light and indoors but I really love how it stretches out like that. Are lot of stores doing that return policy in the states? When you returned it, did they check the lens carefully so that there were no damages to it? I mean, it would be cool if we had that policy here in japan to but that also makes me worried because it wouldn't be brand new right?
Most places here in Canada and in the States would have a similar return policy. It goes with pretty much anything we buy. If we don't like it, then we can return it within two weeks for full refund or exchange. Some places have other rules but I'm just speaking general.
They did check the lens, but they only looked to see if there was any visible imperfections. They didn't stick it under a microscope or anything. I'm bet the lens would go back to the manufacturer anyways to ensure A+ quality
hey great video, also go check out my channel, because im having a xbox 360 and a psp giveaway. And once great video, i rate it 5 stars, keep the good work up.
totally forgot to ask this too how much was this lenses it looks pricey haha cant wait for yur review on yur marco lense! also any ideas for yur next lense to buy?
hey man i love your unboxing videos cause yu always get canon lenses i have same camera but no money for good lenses yet what job do yu have if yu dont mind me asking? and also have yu thought about buying the 70-200mm f1.2?
I looked at it.. But I wanted something with more zoom capability. I have the 55-250mm already, and I figured if I was going to be spending the money on a lens, it would be on something that my other lenses can't reach via performance. The 70-200 is def a good lens though, perhaps one day it'll come as a replacement to the 55-250.

The rated value refers to the widest aperature possible at the lowest and highest focal lengths...you can stop your camera down much further

It's a great lens! I did end up taking it back though :( And I got the 85mm.
There was nothing wrong with the lens itself, I just figured that I wouldn't use it enough for me to feel like I got my money's worth out of it...
If that makes sense...
