Awesome stuff! I've always had a spot for renaissance/baroque/medieval music, especially where the lute is concerned (probably from listening to so much Jethro Tull growing up, though it's not classical, their version of the bouree from on of Bach's lute suites got me looking further into the music). Do you have any suggestions for an intermediate guitarist interested in learning the lute? I know it's a bit of a commitment if I'm going to purchase a lute, but any advice where to start? Thanks!
one of my favorite pieces...i really enjoy hearing your performance! well done! i stumbled onto this video, i'll be going to your channel now to subscribe!
Oh. It's not enough you write songs, have a very nice voice and even play a hired lute. You gotta work in the fact that you can run 10k. You're starting to make me a little ill.
That's a favorite piece. I've heard, of course, played numerous times on the guitar and even vihuela but I think that's the first time I've heard it performed on the lute.
i was wondering i study classical guitar and im going to work at the ren faire as a performer how much does a lute cost? also i would like to get one that is accurate to the time period of the renaissance any help would be much appreciated ~Doug
You can probably pick up a new 7C lute for around £550 today from the Early Music Shop, near Bradford. They have an excellent extensive range of early instruments. Google EMS Bradford; you'll enjoy their store I'm sure.
Hey, great playing! I love your 'Melancholy Galliard.' I was just wondering though, don't you need to have trimmed finger nails for the lute, whereas you need the nails for finger picking with the guitar? I'd like to play the lute, but I also play guitar.
Dude, thats tight! I wanna find myself one of those, and then learn to play it and then play it at the Ren Fest! Lol. Is it fairly similar to the guitar, or not?
I find the lute very similar to the guitar, in terms of its ease of playing. Just tune the 3rd string of a guitar down to F# (from G), and you'll have yourself a virtual lute. :-)
Enjoyed watching the Ignis Solus video by the way. Great music!
Just so you know, that wasn't my video, but I loved it so much, I put it on my front page! And i'll have try the lute tuning sometime, although it wouldn't quite sound the same (I have an electric). But anyways, keep up the rockin' lute videos.
btw, the definitive version of this piece of music by mudarra (imho) can be seen on Youtube if you search for 'Julian Bream Mudarra'; you'll love it. See also the lute vids of 'Edin Karamazov' ... mind blowing!
Perhaps the bunny rabbit in the background had a positive effect on 'ambiance' to make up for the lack of the carackling fire! Joking aside, this is a great take, you played well, Your other lute video is very good as well, I favourited it. Nice tone
Merhaba, gitarankara/Ahmet. Tesekkur ederim for your kind words. However, I've listened to your superbly controlled performance and this Mudarra work does sound much nicer and richer on the guitar...possibly a bit too light on my lute. :-)
i was looking into playing the lute - at the moment i am proficient in viola, guitar, and mandolin... do you know where you can buy a fairly inexpensive one?
Sadly, I know of no inexpensive option! I've now been without a lute for about 7 months. I'm having one made for me, but the waiting time is normally 1 year, and the expense of course is ....prohibitive!
ahh i see... these more or less "obscure" Renaissance instruments seem to be difficult to find... thanks for you input though! good luck with your new lute!
Hi, I love your work with the lute! You're very good and I really enjoy listening to your stuff. Its a beautiful piece and you play it so well. I play the guitar and dulcimer and am hopefully getting a flatback lute soon; I can't wait. In any case, how long have you been playing and how have you learned?
Hi, Corey. Thanks for your very kind comments. Actually, I borrowed this lute for just a few months from the English Lute Society. I learned my two tunes in about 4 or 5 months, then returned the lute. I'm saving for my own now! I've been playing guitar for very many years though...very big help. Quality of the lute build counts for a lot!!
Thanks again, Deborah. It's nice to know that lute music still holds some appeal. I love this piece and its discordant section near the end. When written, I think it was way ahead of its time!
Kind regards.
Alan.
p.s. I have no lute these days...still saving my pennies to hopefully buy one in the future! :-)
Thank you very much for sharing your performances. You are very modest: I have listened to the video several times and survived, without any ear-defenders.
Muchas gracias, Cesar. This really is the best I can squeeze out of this particular lute though. I'm beginning to realise that the Vihuela is more suitable for this piece of music. The lute is possibly too light an instrument. I believe Julian Bream prefers a lute of slightly heavier construction? I might be better off playing on a tennis racquet (or should that be racket)?! :-)
Thanks, Val. Been busy for a couple of months, but have now found some time to start recording again. I recommend some good quality ear-defenders, soon!
Hi, Ed. I've loved that piece ever since I first heard it 30 years ago. Just never got round to it. I love the discordant section in the middle. Mudarra must have caused some real upset back in the 1500's!!!
Hola, Marie. Que tal? :-) Wonderful piece of Spanish music this is, very influential; you can hear the beginnings of the modern day 'Spanish' guitar in this work.

Good to see that you are a Christian! :-)
You may be too young to have heard of Larry Norman, but I covered
one of his songs on YouTube; a song called 'Moses', my own arrangement.
Best Wishes.

Nicely done, and with a well chosen tempo. Often I hear that it is played too fast - for my feeling.

You produce a good sound with nails...is not always easy with the lute playing with nails i am experimenting as we speak..thanks
Robinom 2 years ago
very nice..You play with nails or no nails?
Robinom 2 years ago
Hello, Robinom.
With nails! My main instrument is the steel string acoustic folk guitar (see my vids). The lute was just a short-term hired instrument.
Thanks for marking Julian Bream's 'Captain Digory Piper's' Galliard as a favourute. I've not seen this footage befow. Very nice.
I see his lute's bridge has a saddle fitted in the same way as today's acoustic guitars do. Helps to produce that lovely inimitable Bream sound.
Regards.

Hi, LG1.
Re; finger nails, there are no absolutes. I do play with nails, steel string acoustic, classical guitar and the lute (very badly).
Take a look at Julian Bream's videos; one of the greatest classical guitarists / lutenists ever, imo, and with finger nails.
Regards.
