@DarkRetroFan64 He did mention it pretty much right at the end, but just in passing as a part of Final Fantasy Anthology along with FFV. Fantastic game.
@katanamanatee Oh wow my bad I must've not been paying attention when he mentioned Anthology lol. Funny because I have Anthology and was playing the FF6 disc recently.
@DarkRetroFan64 Ha ha, easily done with long vids. I've been playing it recently myself on the PSP. Never got round to completing it when I had it for the PS1, need to correct that!
I'm someone who had been wanting to branch out with my RPGs (having only played and finished quite a few Pokemon games and also the original Paper Mario), and I can't recommend Chrono Trigger enough. It certainly got me interested in other RPGs.
earthbound under 50?...good luck you gotta find it in a flea market pawn shop or somthing like that and youd be lucky to find 1 there...they retail cart only for 150
Listen kids, you COULD go this route and become a skinny geek the rest of your life, rarely getting laid and avoiding the reflection in the mirror. RPG's are just an escape from reality.
...OR you could join a gym, work out, eat healthy and within a year or two have girls hanging after you, have a successful life and feel good about yourself and your life.
RPG's are like poison, they make you weak socially and physically.
This is primarily directed my young white brothers out there. Live!
I remember Super Mario RPG being really hard for me, I even gave up(I was just a kid back then who still didn't have a complete understanding of RPGs but still loved them) But when I played it as an adult, I breezed through it in just a couple days, without any deaths, and I thought "Oh wow, that was easy." But definitely a good RPG for beginners, and people who love Mario. And Chrono Trigger, definitely gotta play Chrono Trigger!
@psychogundamjavelin And then right when you think your safe...BAM...Mini-boss at the exit...in my experience i had literally 15 seconds to finish the battle >.<
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue was my very first RPG that I finshed, then followed by ps one rpgs such as saiyuki journey west, xenogears, kartia the world of fate and the easiest is Rhapsody the musical adventure... and many more... hint FF...
I was about to be pissed until Chrono Trigger was said for DS. I was about to rage on SNES when you didn't say it. But I held out hope for it to be said for DS. Probably my favorite RPG.
Did you ever happen to play Legend of legia? I believe it came out close to Final Fantasy 7 so it didn't get much attention. But it was a good starter RPG for me when I was young.
I found FFX very hard to get into. After 30 hours I recognized that the battle system didn't make sense to me, and I never finished it. That was the first JRPG I tried (other than pokemon). I had an easier time with the system in Persona4. The fusion system never confused me, because the chart in the manual tells you the basic combinations. I would recommend it for beginners, it's not grindy and the story is fun and (mostly) lighthearted.
a lot of great recommendations there.Chrono Trigger was my 2nd RPG ever,it's really easy to play, the story is epic etc it's overall awesome.happily surprised you showed most Final Fantasy games.i think FF IX might be a good start for the old school ones,VIII might be a tad complicated.Legend of Dragoon i definitely reccommend as well, gameplay is simple enough and combat is interactive with button presses mid-attack.
I use to be a big RPG fan in Middle School/High School when my Big Bro live with us. My favorite RPGS is Chrono Trigger and Star Ocean 2. But i need to play more RPGS for research for my Video Game Idea, Return of Naga. would like Dragon Quest 8, Dragon Quest 9, Dragon Quest 6, Final Fantasy 13,Blue Dragon,Tales of Vesperia and Eternal Sonata.
I'd also like to recommend the Mega-Man Battle Network series on the Game Boy Advanced. Great RPG with an interesting battle system that is quite easy to understand, but a bit difficult to master.
Hello bro, I'm not a huge fan of turned-based RPGs, actually, I've never played an RPG game, so what about the Action RPGs? are those like Zelda? Could you recomend me a game with very complex story, but with action gameplay for any of the Nintendo consoles (including handhelds)?
@JAntonioGK hmm i think Star Ocean:Till the End of Time is a good one.the story is long, the game is pretty long and the battles are 3D action-ish type but menu based.it's real-time though, dunno if it'd be too hard.PS2 btw.Kingdom Hearts also, there's games of the series on the DS but the series began on Playstation consoles.no battle screen transition so battles are fluid but it's got a lot of Disney stuff so cartoony.Star Ocean does have screen transitions but no real loading time
@JAntonioGK how could anyone say any zelda game is an rpg....OMG ITS NOT A FUCKING RPG!!!!!!!zelda is an adventure game .....people need to stop calling zelda an RPG.....a true RPG fan knows this
@optimoblunt Actually I'm not an RPG fan so I didn't know, bro. But if you remove the turn-based combats, I think there is a very thin line between action-based RPGs and Zelda games right? or are there other elements that differentiate them?
@PeteDorr You never talked about Star Ocean! That series is amazing and a great starter RPG. My brother is not really into RPG's but that game grabbed him and now he is hooked! Whats your thoughts on Star Ocean and have you played it?
@ChimairaGod yeah the main reason being space travel is really cool and the battles are real-time action based which new generation kids can easily get into
I'd say start from the bottom up. Snes would be a great place to start. Final Fantasy V/VI, Chrono Trigger, Breath Of Fire I/II, Lufia I/II. After that, you'll be fully prepared for just about anything that comes later.
FF9 is my favorite FF also...and too bad you didn't recommend Demon's souls as a starter RPG. anyone who knows anything about it understands it's a terrible STARTER rpg...but it would be funny to get some reactions anyway. It's a great Action style RPG for anyone into the genre tho. Amazing if you stick with it. And Dark Souls was even better IMO. Love the souls games.
FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY FINAL FANTASY
My Little cousin (8 years old) asked me what RPG's he should get into first, So I bought him a Super nintendo and a copy of "Zelda: A link to the past", then I bought him a Copy of FF7 for his ps2 (originaly ps1 of course)... He is now a huge RPG fan ;)
Ooh, you had me until FFXIII. That game was blasphemy. In fact, Square-Enix hasn't made a single game that has impressed me, not even all their countless remakes they insist on pooping out, ruining, changing, and adding needless crap. I'll take my classic FFIV over the DS remake any day.. or the After Years crap. SE loves making sequels...
You definitely redeemed yourself with Final Fantasy IX (best FF tied w/VII IMO) and Lost Odyssey though. Lost Odyssey is the best console RPG in years!!
my first rpg was eternal sonata, it was decent, never finished it buts i learnt alot. i decided to try final fantasy 13 -2 i didnt know what was going on n how to play.. i went back in time, and tried shining force 1 for sega,, that is perfect for beginners its simple. so simple. and you learn as you . as you gain an extra to your team you learn a new approach to beating the enemys and is like pokemon, level up, magic, strength weakness. im atm doing shining force ll.
But the story, and sound was amasing.one of the best in FF series.and besides FF XIII have ABSOLUTELY worst combat system (you just have to select auto battle and press X button and thats all)
@squintsicle cheeky cunt lol why must he change his appearance just so a woman would bat an eyelid at him. how would you feel if some1 said they would date your or pay you attention if you changed your image or lifestyle. if they cant take me or him for what i am, there likely not to be worth it. peace!
@misterneckbreaker88 lol He is an attractive person, I'm not saying he has to do that to get girls, I'm pretty sure he gets enough girls. He's very knowledgeable and I know plenty of girls who totally dig that, I myself being one of them. That line was a conversation starter, and obviously it worked. lol (: xx
Earthbound and Super Mario RPG where 2 of my very first rpgs that I've gotten my hands on growing up. If a 6 year old can play em then they definitely are good starters :-)
I'm playing earthbound at the moment, just finish earthbound zero (mother 1) and these games are for me the best games to start playing rpg type of games! highly recommend these!!!
I'm not one to play RPG games. I'm honestly not that open to the idea of playing one. But, I love these reccomendations based on what my friend play's. (He plays RPG games) and this is a good list. Thanks for the list!
I've been an RPG player since I started gaming and I think your list was really well put together. I was waiting the entire time for you to mention FFIV, and I'm kind of surprised you listed the DS version because (in my opinion) it was the hardest version of the game. Anyway, regardless it was a great list and I enjoyed watching your video
The first RPG I've ever played is Phantasy Star Universe and it is quite an easy game to get into (even though it isn't turn based) with many action elements :)
@mishwag11 would you shut up this guy's being kind and helping out people who are interested in something he loves, and he's more than happy to share his knowledge with them. just leave him alone if you only know how to be bitter against people who play video games. shame on you
dragon warrior 3 got me into rpgs big time. i always liked the first one, and had yet to play the second one at the time, but when i played 3 for the first time i was blown away.
Might I make a sugestion? Parasite Eve 1 and 2 on PS1. The first one being more of an action RPG, only having 1 character to manage, and being pretty short, I think it could be a good intro. The same with PE2, it plays more like Resident Evil, but it has the stat building and exploration of an RPG.
Well if you're thinking of playing "Lost Odyssey" i'd be careful about the copy you pick up (in the PAL region anyway) because Disc 4 would not read on some copies of the game.
Some of my favourite games are RPGs such as, Fallout 3, TES: Oblivion, TES: Skyrim and Fable The lost chapters. I'm also going to get Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Dragon Age because those games look good. Can anyone suggest adventure/rpg games like those? It doesn't matter what system.
@mmaperson Good examples mate. RPG's do not have to be all Emo and turn based (V.A.T.S. is a good turn based system, is has to be said) as those games you mentioned demonstrate. If you don't have these RPG's already, get Deus Ex: Human Revolution, NIER, Mass Effect 1 & 2 and the Bioshock games. All are great action RPG's.
Final Fantasy VIII was my first RPG which I played when I was 7-8. I did not understand the junction system WHATSOEVER but that was probably because the first time I played it through I skipped the junction tutorial that Quistis gives you. I just loathe tutorials, I'd rather figure it out myself. But luckily there was an auto junction feature which I used constantly.
the rpgs i first started with were on the c64 times of lore bards tale might and magic and ultima were some of the rpgs i had for it so far ive played through every ultima game the first 6 might and magic games final fantasy 1-10 plus numerous dragonquest games plus phantasy star 1-4 and the shinning force games on sega
funny thing is i played pokemon as my first rpg, and it made me love the turnbased system, then wen i got a lil older i got ff7 and it made me love the more complex rpg that has a realy good deep story, thers a game on ps2 called aarc twilight spirits that i think people shud try that are into rpgs its a turnbased kind of grd kind of not game that has a prity good story and is realy fun
I came to this video because while I did used to play RPG's in the past, the last few RPG's I've played didn't really grab me that much thus I was starting to lose hope in the genre. Then, I came across this video on my recommended videos section and thanks to this video, I'll probably get back into the genre. But, I have to start all over from the basics from what you recommended. Because I think if I start that way, then maybe my love for RPG's would come back.
@GeekCritic89 Of course way before I saw this video, I already own FF7, FFX and Brave Story: New Traveler. And I think they are pretty good games. But, I'll definitely check the ones that are for the PS1, PS2, PS3 and PSP since I own a PS2 & a PSP. And also that my sister owns a PS3 and I do play games on there.
Great video PeteDorr. It was very informative and helpful. And by the way, nice Howl's Moving Castle shirt. I personally think that it's my 5th favorite anime from Hayao Miyazaki.
I am new to rpg's i'm playing ff7 right now and the thing I worry about most is not being strong enough to beat A boss. So I grind occasionally. What I wanna know is how do you know what rpg's require you to grind?
@superglenn217 It's mostly about trial and error, FF7 was really good and balanced, some bosses were terribly hard and i had to train before hand but some I just killed easily, most of bosses are just techniques you need to learn before hand than having to grind.
I myself am also into the (j)rpg scene and a video game/console collector as well.
When you mentioned that FFVII and Wild Arms were the games that started your love of the rpg scene,i thought what the hey....,that was the same for me and my wife.
Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion is a great way to ease yourself into RPGs. Now granted, the game itself does feel like a button masher, it does deliver a great RPG experience as you farm materials for synthesis, learn new abilities, compete side quests, all while indulging yourself in a great story expanding various Disney worlds. Yes, as silly as that sounds, it is a great beginner series. IT HAS FINAL FANTASY CAMEOS TOO :)
Well basically you gave example about Final Fantasy's battle system when describing what the battles are like in RPG games.Well I buy that cause' I'm a big FF fan ;)
I was surprised to see no mention of PS1's Legend of Legaia. Great game to start with. It was my first RPG and to this day still my favorite. Turn based with VERY interesting battle and magic systems. Even if you're not a beginner, Legaia is still a great RPG!
I like ur videos dude but in this one I think i someone want to start whit rpgs it doesn have to be with easy shitties. It have to star with chrono trigger chrono cross vagrant story final fantasy VII final fantasy XII rougue galaxy final fantasy tactics or tactics ogre and in my opinion persona series and if he want a classic introduction final fantasys and dragon quests and that enough to star and whit that its done no more neccesary just a couple of legends

I was waiting the entire time for you to mention FFIV, and I'm kind of surprised you listed the DS version because (in my opinion) it was the hardest version of the game. Anyway, regardless it was a great list and I enjoyed watching your video

Kingdom Hearts was the first RPG I ever played back in 2002. I would highly recommend it to any RPG newcomers.

The first RPG I've ever played is Phantasy Star Universe and it is quite an easy game to get into (even though it isn't turn based) with many action elements :)

Might I make a sugestion? Parasite Eve 1 and 2 on PS1. The first one being more of an action RPG, only having 1 character to manage, and being pretty short, I think it could be a good intro. The same with PE2, it plays more like Resident Evil, but it has the stat building and exploration of an RPG.

i lost you when you pulled out ff13....WTF!! that shouldn't be labeled as an RPG it should be labeled PIECE OF SHIT made in japan.
Deadnsd 1 month ago
Well if you're thinking of playing "Lost Odyssey" i'd be careful about the copy you pick up (in the PAL region anyway) because Disc 4 would not read on some copies of the game.

Some of my favourite games are RPGs such as, Fallout 3, TES: Oblivion, TES: Skyrim and Fable The lost chapters. I'm also going to get Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Dragon Age because those games look good. Can anyone suggest adventure/rpg games like those? It doesn't matter what system.
mmaperson 1 month ago

GeekCritic89 1 month ago

What I wanna know is how do you know what rpg's require you to grind?
superglenn217 1 month ago
@superglenn217 It's mostly about trial and error, FF7 was really good and balanced, some bosses were terribly hard and i had to train before hand but some I just killed easily, most of bosses are just techniques you need to learn before hand than having to grind.

Aww... no Kingdom Hearts?
Kingdom Hearts, in my opinion is a great way to ease yourself into RPGs. Now granted, the game itself does feel like a button masher, it does deliver a great RPG experience as you farm materials for synthesis, learn new abilities, compete side quests, all while indulging yourself in a great story expanding various Disney worlds. Yes, as silly as that sounds, it is a great beginner series. IT HAS FINAL FANTASY CAMEOS TOO :)

I was surprised to see no mention of PS1's Legend of Legaia. Great game to start with. It was my first RPG and to this day still my favorite. Turn based with VERY interesting battle and magic systems. Even if you're not a beginner, Legaia is still a great RPG!
