Aja had to be one of the best albums ever recorded in the 70's. It was so well produced, band never sounded tighter, and the songs on album are timeless!!!
why so many haters, the aristocratic hyper ciritcal with uninterested wives playing arm chair donalds? nahh, I'm 27 and have seen the Dan a few times down here in Clearwater, once on my birthday when we spent the last half dancing around in the back right by behind the rear soundboard. just glad they are touring with summer filled with warped tours, and warped people but the haters are probably just album junkies. @alexhirschmusic -- Yeah I know that but I think he toured with the Dan a few times didn't he... maybe I am wrong -- Steve tours once in a while with different musicians.

@GaribaldiInTheMaking i think it just a cheap two octave keyboard (not midi controller) you have to blow into. one tone choice.miked, with a clarinet mouthpiece, which i'm going to guess was his instrument in high school band.
Very cool version of a difficult song to play. I thought Donald's singing was real good on this one. I love the entire Aja CD. Have listened and supported SD since 1972.

@raunjohn1 Do you have a set list maybe ? Hope it's not a bother. Been listening about as long as you. I think I wore out the grooves on The Greatest Hits Album.

@friendlier Well said. "Aja" is one of the most brilliantly written albums I've ever heard. They (along with King Crimson) took whatever "rules" applied to song writing & blew them to bits. You know if the "B" side is as strong as the "A" side, you know you did something right.
31 dislikes? Are 31 people really that clumsy and hit the wrong button. Oh that's right they want to hear it exactly like it sounds on the record. That's a shame.
Just got home from the concert here in Portland.....OH MY GOD! It took 30 years to see them live, but it was worth every minute of the wait. Incredible live show....trust me Donald and Walter still have it. Never heard a better horn section......great way to tip into the 4th of July. My respect y'all
Aja. Chosen by the Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Recording Registry for being culturally, historically and aesthetically important, and/or inform or reflect life in the United States.
@frankitoxi man, you're right. i never noticed...this changes everything. i'm listening to all steely dan songs with a different ear from now on #lifechanger
This version of Aja most certainly is not crap, and KC is one hell of a drummer. I applaud and respect him for not just copying Gadd. The studio version had many takes before the boys deemed it worthy of release (Fagen and Becker are notorious perfectionists). You have Keith in kind of a no win scenario here. If he tried to emulate Gadd, you would probably get on his case about that. But since he doesn't do that, you call him a hack. Hey, if you want to hear someone trying (
Who are the people who "dislike" this? Why would anyone come here, watch this amazing video, and decide they don't like it? It's like there's a breed of radioactively mutant trolls out there. Or maybe the nutjobs who are expecting the Rapture next week and are just giving the finger to everything worth knowing a loving on their way out. If so, good riddance. And give my regards to Jesus. I'll seem him on the other side when the time comes and we'll watch this video together.
Steely and Dan (I kid) are top notch but the rest of the band, vocalists, maybe not the bassist I can tell, are just a bit green or low-grade and I MEAn that in a respectful manner, I mean, they can play but ... they lack a magic... I mean, you can be a great musician but its more than that... anyway, current tour sounds amazing if you haven't heard the plans.
Where is the God of Aja, Steve Gadd. Without him the song barely flies. The Drummer looks, plays like a student. This is awful. Everyone: get out the original vinyl or cd and listen to Steve Gadd rip this song to absolute shreds. He nails it w/ truly ballsy, amazing fills. This is like 2 week old pizza w/ warm mayonnaise on top.
@bucketdaweed No, you can tell he studies and can keep time, but the ratamacues, roughs and improvised fills Steve does are priceless. Makes the song very powerful. Very difficult to imitate but this drummer could have learned them for this epic tune. Donald Fagen's little Casiohorn is silly too.
@eqsmooth Well if your not familar with Kieth Carlock then you need to get on that.. No one can be Gadd, and im prety sure he is playing what he does best and not trying to be gadd. hes not gadd hes Kieth Carlock a legend in his own right. I love Keith and i love Gadd. I think its cool to see how 2 great drummers would play the same song differently... you think Vinnie would play gadds stuff note for note.. hell no.. thats what makes this music interesting to watch with diff players.
@eqsmooth If your not familar with Kieth you need to get on that. Im certain he can play Gadds stuff note for note. but he got hired cause hes Kieth Freakin Carlock!!! hes a beast! I like to see how 2 great drummers would play the same thing.. it be boring to see Kieth playing Gadd, Kieth plays like Kieth and Gadd plays like gadd... thats what makes them both great. they have there own playing styles. Both are great in there own ways. No one can be Gadd, and no one can be Kieth.
@weedWhich version sounds better? This crap or the 1977 recording w/the fills that make the song. One of the best songs ever written, Steve Gadd makes it all come together. Carlock can play (I believe he spells his name Keith) but this recording sounds terrible. What if another drummer came in and played w/Rush and decided NOT to copy Gadd note for note. It would suck. The only live drummer for Steely Dan is Dennis Chambers. Keep smokin' the good green stuff, you might even sound good, stoner.
@bucketdaweed I just wanted to say "stoner", like O'Reilly says "stoned slacker" and I love John Bonham's playing very much, but I didn't study every reference to him such as bucketdaweed. Perhaps i should have. Why did you remove the comment? Bonham' s drumming on Fool in the Rain is a great as Gadd;s Aja and on Good Times Bad Times he plays like it is the future. Magical. What Keith does here is fine but there is something otherworldy and improvisational about what Gadd did in 1977.
@eqsmooth Yo yo ma! I removed a comment cause i posted the same thing twice for some reason... Actually its buckdafish the weed part is from buckweed, snl ... my friend gave me the nickname while i was studying at music school... and some how it ended up as my name on here. . at least you got good taste in music.. keep watchin youtube, its great i get stuck on here all the time weaving a maze of music videos.... peace broda.
@bucketdaweed I still don't know hoe buckdafish or bucketdaweed has to do w/John Bonham but whatever. Isn't it "Buh wheat" based on Litte Rascals "our gang" played by Eddie Murphy on SNL. He played Buck Wheat or Buh Wheat. In anycase I will watch some more Keith Carlock videos. Very into Vinnie Colaiuta right now and that babe bass player Tal Wilkenfeld. Jeff Beck's chick bass player.
@bucketdaweed With my comments you could not tell? I'm not on the level of a Carlock (I listened to more of his playing btw) but I've been known to come up with some original rhythms & a bad ass solo or two. Paiste, Zildjian, Yamaha, Gretsch for now, all vintage. I'll add and subtract later. I was a constant clinic go'er & met and played with some of the best. I can't believe that Wilkenfeld is like 25 years old and how she just came to America & became one of the best. Incredible story.
@eqsmooth Ouch.. well i appriciate both... lets agree to disagree. and my name has nothin to do with weed. ever heard of john bonham and buckweed from snl... anywhoo thats doesnt matter.
Reading positive comments from young people is very liberating for me. I'm 68. I recall when I was a kid listening to this new phenomenon called rock-and-roll. Adults would call it revolting jungle music, and long for the sound of Glen Miller (the REAL music). I didn't know anyone of my age who agreed with them. I was afraid I'd turn into one of those dinosaurs, a fear that intensified when rap and hip-hop took over.
This band is cleaner than a Safeway Chittilin, and can write any song about anything and make it sound great and I notice the music is in all the band memebers hearts which makes it so much easier for the listener.
I play trumpet in a 20 piece band and we often break out Steely Dan charts. It's challenging and great fun to play. The crap that passes for music these days is appalling.......bad poetry with no melody, harmony and a load of electronically produced garbage in the background. Wake up kids..it takes real talent to play a proper instrument..years of study and practice. Any Schmo can do rap and hip-hop...there's no talent there .Wake up...SD forever.
this gets my shivers-down-the-spine-rating

Incredible live show....trust me Donald and Walter still have it. Never heard a better horn section......great way to tip into the 4th of July. My respect y'all

I've loved this band ever since they released their first LP but Fagen got weirder in appearance over the years - he is like a caricature.

That ain't Steve Gadd on the drums. Don't get me wrong, this drummer is good, but, it ain't (as the title says) Steve Gadd.
KellyVisionPictures 8 months ago
@KellyVisionPictures The drummer's name is Keith Carlock, accompanying The Dan since a couple of years.

@eqsmooth.

ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME... PERIOD.
VEGANSAM 8 months ago
Where is the God of Aja, Steve Gadd. Without him the song barely flies. The Drummer looks, plays like a student. This is awful. Everyone: get out the original vinyl or cd and listen to Steve Gadd rip this song to absolute shreds. He nails it w/ truly ballsy, amazing fills. This is like 2 week old pizza w/ warm mayonnaise on top.
eqsmooth 8 months ago
@eqsmooth agreed gadd is god but kieth carlock is no slouch.
bucketdaweed 8 months ago
@bucketdaweed No, you can tell he studies and can keep time, but the ratamacues, roughs and improvised fills Steve does are priceless. Makes the song very powerful. Very difficult to imitate but this drummer could have learned them for this epic tune. Donald Fagen's little Casiohorn is silly too.
eqsmooth 8 months ago

No one can be Gadd, and no one can be Kieth.
bucketdaweed 8 months ago

Magical. What Keith does here is fine but there is something otherworldy and improvisational about what Gadd did in 1977.
eqsmooth 8 months ago
@eqsmooth Yo yo ma! I removed a comment cause i posted the same thing twice for some reason... Actually its buckdafish the weed part is from buckweed, snl ... my friend gave me the nickname while i was studying at music school... and some how it ended up as my name on here. . at least you got good taste in music.. keep watchin youtube, its great i get stuck on here all the time weaving a maze of music videos.... peace broda.
bucketdaweed 8 months ago
@bucketdaweed I still don't know hoe buckdafish or bucketdaweed has to do w/John Bonham but whatever. Isn't it "Buh wheat" based on Litte Rascals "our gang" played by Eddie Murphy on SNL. He played Buck Wheat or Buh Wheat. In anycase I will watch some more Keith Carlock videos. Very into Vinnie Colaiuta right now and that babe bass player Tal Wilkenfeld. Jeff Beck's chick bass player.
eqsmooth 8 months ago
@eqsmooth Ya shes pretty nice to look at. Are u a drummer?
bucketdaweed 8 months ago
@bucketdaweed With my comments you could not tell? I'm not on the level of a Carlock (I listened to more of his playing btw) but I've been known to come up with some original rhythms & a bad ass solo or two. Paiste, Zildjian, Yamaha, Gretsch for now, all vintage. I'll add and subtract later. I was a constant clinic go'er & met and played with some of the best. I can't believe that Wilkenfeld is like 25 years old and how she just came to America & became one of the best. Incredible story.

Thanks for saving me.
Yea! SD still rules.
