  • UMG!!! IM # 99,999 to watch this video... I FEEL SO LUCKY!

  • This is an amazing video to teach the basics and now I can spell my name in sign language! THANK YOU :)

  • after like 10 seconds of the piano i immediately knew the song lol i love owl city

  • Fui aprendendo como ASL para agora meses e esta feito o alfabeto. sou surda , mora Brasil ! vou trata mais aprendeer libras . bjs

  • Sean used the "lazy deaf E" which is the "open E". Not the closed one. Its the same but for interpreters we have to use only the closed E......how LAME.

  • @Piggiesunshine I've had plenty of interpreters use the open E. It isn't wrong. It's just a variation which many people use. There isn't a single 'right' way to sign it, just as if you were pronouncing tomato the standard American and British ways.

As long as the Deaf person can understand you, you can use either.

  • @Soosane If you are left handed then you would mirror what the right handed people are doing. Unless you feel more comfortable signing with your right hand being dominant, like me :D Most of the time if there is movement in the sign, but only one hand moves (like in EASY or BROTHER or SISTER) the hand you move will be your dominant hand (aka your left hand).

  • I've been learning ASL for like 2 months and I was done the alphabet by the time they got to E.

  • Damn, Emmett can teach me all day long....grew up learning sign language but got hearingaids and went to a hearing school so i forgot it all....I'm now in college relearning it. I'm also use a wheelchair most of the time to get around cuz my legs aren't so great. I would love to get a deaf boyfriend who can both accept me relearning ASL and me being in a wheelchair....my time will come but hopefully soon.

  • @TheGirlWhoGames Wow you have a wonderful story, and yes you WILL find your soulmate in this world :)

  • The background music is the instrumental of The saltwater room? <3

  • Can Sean Berdy please have more interviews? Please?

  • Random question about signing but if you are left handed, do you just mirror what a right handed person does or is it the same but with your left hand?

  • @Soosane its the same just with your left hand.

  • I live in the UK and I've just started teaching myself sign language, the ABC's seem so much easier in the states!

  • @smackjack1992 lol it's cause british sign language is sooo different than asl.

  • Where did you get this song from?! I know it is saltwater room by owl city, obviously a piano cover. I absolutely LOVE it, and the end gets cut off, I want to hear the end!! :( Can someone PLEASE tell me where I can listen to the whole song?

  • Where can I find this song? :)

  • @SuperSecret23 you mean deaf not dead.

  • I love this song :) owl city rocks! and the video was very helpful. Thanks :)

  • my new favorite letters: e, k, s, u, z

i just watched it because sean was in it ;)

  • @SuperSecret23 Cool :) Thanks!

  • @SuperSecret23 she means deaf not dead lol and first not fist....im her sister just correcting her spelling if idk if you understood you probably did. Anyway glad you liked the video :-D

  • But when you are "saying" your name in sign language, do you actually spell it out with the ABC's? Or does each name have a certain sign with it?

  • @discolemonade719 Only someone that's deaf can assign you a sign its part of the deaf culture. Until you have a sign you have to spell your name with the ABC letters....so the answer to your fist question is yes and the answer to your second is yes, but you can't assign it to yourself.

  • @SuperSecret23 Not a real one. But in sign language class, we did get to assign ourselves a sign name. ;)

  • @discolemonade719 Getting a sign from a deaf person is like a gift. When you become someone to a deaf person, he or she will give you a name sign. Until then, you spell your name in the ABCs like it is above. But you cant assign one yourself, Only a deaf person can do it for you.

  • @discolemonade719 and dometimes at my school in the sign language club, the people that are hard of hearing sometimes give you name signs. I didnt get one yet though :/

  • I know how to spell my name now(:

  • at my school there is a deaf kid and he dose the abc so different to what they did

  • @theoneandonlyme5 i go to a high school where there are about 50 deaf kids and no, they just do it very very fast

  • It's Owl City, The Saltwater Room!!!

Great video though, i need the review for an upcoming asl class...

  • I really liked this video it helped a lot so thank you. And yay! i almost got it!

  • whats the name of the song ? i really like the sounds of the piano (: thank's )

  • @RaniarPutri0229 see my comment above :)

(It's either that, or another one of those times where I fail to recognize a cover...

  • бред полный, мой русский клевый.

  • emmett-fanfiction.tumblr.com if you like emmett or switched at birth you should read this

  • saltwater room(:

  • Owl City on piano! :D

  • Waiiitttt...so when we "write" Z in the air, or trace, I guess, do we trace it so it looks normal to someone who's watching us or do we write it so it looks normal to us?

  • @marisagm9 - It's traced so it looks normal to you.

  • @snugglebunnykalea Ok thank you I was confused for a minute!!

  • @marisagm9 You sign the letter "Z" the way you write it (only if you're right handed). If you're left handed, you start at the top right and end at the bottom left (as opposed to the right hand's start at the top left and end at the bottom right).

  • Owl city?? Salt water room

  • 1:11 I GOT YOUR NOSE!

  • Whats this song called? I love Sean :D plus the rest of the cast <3

  • @xoxoclairexoxo1 never tell a deaf person they are wrong, it's very rude cause it's their language and it doesn't matter if they are wrong or not

  • i love this song!

  • @leahbea513 he actually did e correctly

  • Anyone know the name of the song?

  • @freetobeme96 The song is a piano cover of The Saltwater Room by Owl City

  • Alphabet! First thing you learn, last thing you master. =)

  • does it matter if i do 'G' the opposite way?

  • @harukojerryyanlove I'm not sure what you mean by "opposite way", but you should do it the correct way.

  • I can remember all, but Q and P :(

  • Owl city saltwater room <3

  • what happens if your name has 2 of the same letters in it? like L-Y-N-N-A-E? how do you show 2 n's? or you dont?

  • @AznAshes You do this by spelling it out as in.....L-Y-N, when you get to the second N just move your hand down slightly and spell the rest. So you are saying......L-Y-N-(move hand slightly downward, but keeping the N sign.) N-A-E. Its kinda hard to explain but I hope this helps.

  • @SuperSecret23 ohh. So when Emmett spells his name he moves his hand down twice? (<- exampele.) but thanx :D Helped a bunch ^^

  • @AznAshes you can either move it down or to the side but yes. your welcome then :)

  • @SuperSecret23 - If you slide it, it will go in the direction of your dominant hand. I'm left handed so that's my dominant hand, but I learned to sign with my right. So my right is considered my dominant hand for this purpose. When I slide, I slide my letters to the right. If you're signing with your left hand you'll slide to the left. I hope this helps.

  • @SuperSecret23 hi im 13 and after watching switched at birth for the first time i want to learn sign language or is it called asl ? but im really intrested in it do u no when i could learn

  • @AznAshes You just do that letter and keeping that letter you move your hand outward. I learned that in the 5th grade.

  • I took a sign language class last year, and this show has really helped my fluency in the language :)

  • Thanks for putting this up, finally, it's been a long time since i ever had to do sign but I want to learn it well.

  • m and n look exactly the same

  • @almighthamster you thumb is in a different place.....for m its in between your pinkey and ring finger and for n its in the middle of all you fingers then t is in between your middle finger and your pointer finger. So a little different

  • i wish i could sign better..... :(

  • @jocylinbsings PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE. i was just able to actually memorize my abc's in sign language a week ago. I use to mix up a few letters now i can do it really fast and make no mistakes. So the more you practice you will pick it up, I promise :)

  • Aww Vanille Twilght in the background! Owl City<3

  • How cool!

  • I already know my ABC's in sign language. I just watched this for Sean Berdy (:

  • @xoXSlothsXox oh i know right!!!

  • @xoXSlothsXox im deaf and i know asl.. and i agree with u just for sean! LOL

  • Sweet! I also love the Owl City in the background ;)

  • btw, who on earth would dislike this? That is like offending a race.

  • Everytime I watch a video about switched at birth I just want to cry. Sean, and everybody else that is deaf goes through so much. God bless them, I <3 ya Sean!!!! Nice work on Switched and on Sandlot!!! :)

  • btw cute video. I wonder about sean. Got talent and i like his character....but its so hard on Deaf actors sometimes. I felt worse for Deaf entertainers after watching See what i saying

  • @neverjanay thanks....I feel as though they are the same as everyone else. I mean they grew up that way so they know how to deal with it. Sean is a fantastic actor and performer and he never lets that get him down. marlee matlin who plays his mother is the same way. She grew up deaf and has a fantastic career and is married and has 4 kids. I mean they may have it hard in movies and stuff but think of it as its their life and they learn to live it.

  • @SuperSecret23 yeah it is hard on the average actor. its worse when you stand out cause of something like being Deaf or born a dwarf. Studios are like we do't want this or that. They are just picky. I researched his history. he's actually quite active in Deaf films & other things. He has enough multiple talents, so he can go far, whether the general population knows it or not. Yeah marlin is a awesome person and i thought she was a great influence on him with all her experience.

  • the way i learn the letter z was to use the little finger instead of the index finger because when u transition from y to z, ur little finger is already out. Is this considered wrong?

  • @juicycoprussia it means something else so yes because you would be the only person that knows that if you were talking to someone in sign language

  • @juicycoprussia

    No it's not wrong..

To the person who commented first..

It goes with your comfort level. You can either use it with your pointer finger or your little finger it's all about preference and which you like best. Which ever makes it easier for you to "go in transition from y to z"

  • im taking asl now i love it!

  • It's Owl City!!!!!! The Saltwater Room is my FAVE SONG!!!!!

  • they say you should sign with your dominant hand as your primary signing hand and your other hand as the second for signs requiring two hands.

  • Do you have to use both hands for the ABC's or does it not matter

  • @MsBwilliams961 some words yes you have to use both hands but no it dosen't matter what hand. Some people say you have to use your right hand but it really does not matter what hand you use. You have to make sure you have the expressions on your face that's what matters because since you cant yell they use thier face expressions say it.

  • @SuperSecret23

I met a sign language interpetor the other day randomly and asked her about which hand to use because I am left handed and she said it is the dominant hand of the signer!

  • @SuperSecret23 For the ABC's (or fingerspelling really) you only use one hand, but you always use your dominate hand (writing hand). So the actor that plays John is left handed, everyone else is right handed. When you get into signing beyond fingerspelling, you sometimes use both hands, although your dominate hand will always be the most active.

  • @SuperSecret23 Incorrect. You must use your dominant hand.

  • @SuperSecret23 you mean use asl grammar? Grammar is used for more than expression of emotion or something else. There is no reason to use both hands in fingerspelling. I am an interpreting major, and I have yet to see that in any of my classes.

  • does it matter if i can do the letters but at the wrong angle, but i do know about the I and J. and if your saying (-ing) you use the J hand for that right at the end.

please someone reply i am still trying to learn ASL

  • @rockandrolldude22 I took ASL for a semester in college. I would say it depends on the angle, yes....because certain angles can mean different things. Like the letter "v" is also the number 2 so it would matter what your signing like if you are spelling something out or saying a number. So i would say yes it does matter but as long as the person knows what your signing then it dosen't as long as you have it right.

  • What is that song? I like it!

  • @DramaticLife1997 to tell you the truth I don't really remember but I know the band is called Piano Tribute. All of there songs are made from other songs and they just turn it into all piano music. They have a lot of famous songs.

  • @DramaticLife1997 It's originally from Owl City -The Saltwater Room. Hope that helps.

  • @DramaticLife1997 This song is called The Saltwater Room and it is from a band called Owl City

  • @dancelovekat its a cover to the song by Owl City actually. It's just the piano playing the music

  • @SuperSecret23 I know that, I just gave the entire name incase anyone wanted to hear it with words too =)
