Dougie is one of my favourite artists but I never heard him sing this before. I knew it was his song but I only ever heard it from my Unvle Davy. Him and I sing it to a totally different tune! xD
My favorite song of Dougie's hands down... I remember walking the streets of Las Vegas listening to this song on my IPod and thinking about how true the lyrics were in contrast to the glitter and sham that surrounded me. I put the song on repeat and listened to it for the next few hours as I roamed around taking in how scarred that city seemed underneath all the shiny neon.
This is one of the great songs of the real Celtic tradition and well done by all concerned. The Celtic spiritualist, John O'Donohue would be well pleased I'm sure.
Anybody remember a fantastic BBC programme about Dougie Maclean and Kathy Mattea... Broadcast in 1996 I think. I have it on VHS tape somewhere. Is it on DVD..?
What a fabulous song!! I know its boring and I should be able to figure it our myself but......I can't!! (LOL) ..... so, is Dougie in an open tuning? DADGAD or "D"???
Should it be of interest, Kathy Mattea is involved in the filming of a Transatlantic Sessions series 4 30 Jan - 01 Feb. No idea who else is attending this time.
Good news for all fans is the release of the DVD "Transatlantic Sessions: Series 3" bringing together the best of Nashville, Ireland and Scotland to perform what has been called "the greatest backporch shows ever".
All of the six half-hour programmes from the BBC/RTÉ TV series are included, recorded in a beautiful old converted farm steading in the Perthshire Highlands.
mnemonyxx...Randomly discovered this song, while searching for Jerry Douglas videos...uh...wow. It's kinda my new favourite song. Thanks for re-introducing me to Dougie, and for the rest of your videos.
Wow. This song blows me away. I just discovered him by complete accident on the internet today. What a blessing! And as a budding songwriter, his lyrics are so on point. Wow.
This is great! I have loved his music for long years now, it would be wonderful to have more of his work available online...I probably won't ever have a chance to see him in a live performance.
I hope that's not true - he is awesome live. I've seen him 5 or 6 times - my husband knows that whenever Dougie comes within 100 miles of us, we're going. ;-) I'm really excited because this summer he is touring with his entire band.
This is great. Thanks for the post. We need more of Dougie on YouTube. I was dissapointed with Mary Black's version of Dougie's song. I thought it lacked fire - unlike Dougie's own version, which is so wired. I've seen him perform this song solo and it's still a knockout!
And my favorite, Donal Lunny on bouzouki.

Sunambra - Dougie pretty much never plays in standard tuning. Usually a dropped 'C' tuning.
