Google is cataloging all of your personal emails in a giant database and using it to improve their ability to generate ads. I think that is BS. I find it very disturbing when I'm typing an email and the ad is about the subject that I'm typing about. It's none of Google's damned business what my personal correspondance is. If they feel that it is, I guess that I will have to go elsewhere. And to those who are defending it, I say this, how much is Google paying you to say it?
Gmail is free and offers more than 7 GB of storage for your mail and a lot of functionalities like IMAP and Push Notifications. If you're using Gmail with a mail client, you do not have any ads. I don't know what's worse, saying that they're trying to make more money with high-performing ads, or that they're using bits and pieces of your personal e-mails to tailor the ads specifically for you. They don't say how they use the data; they may be copying parts of your e-mails to an aggregated database where a plethora of information about you is kept.
It just implies a lot. What if search results become based on not just your search history, but your personal e-mail patterns?

1) I visit this webpage to see the page content, not ads.
2) Put ads out of the way so that they are not getting in my way of anything

To those still stuck in the stone age of ads; Get firefox and get Adblocker Plus for firefox. If it blocks too much you can even filter out the links you want unblocked easily.

I don't know what's worse, saying that they're trying to make more money with high-performing ads, or that they're using bits and pieces of your personal e-mails to tailor the ads specifically for you. They don't say how they use the data; they may be copying parts of your e-mails to an aggregated database where a plethora of information about you is kept.
It just implies a lot. What if search results become based on not just your search history, but your personal e-mail patterns?

i still believe more relevant ads are better for us than less relevant ads. yes, they are just ads, but just think about it: if I can choose between an interesting or a bullshit ad, I would take the interesting one. I've also ignored the gmail ads, it is pretty easy, but at times you read it - maybe by accident - well and then i'd rather read something interesting than some bullshit

Honestly! Has anyone ever looked at the ads that come up in gmail or any other Google service? If you did... Did you ever click them? I mean seriously I've completely forgot they were there until I saw the Google update banner tonight. Pretty much the whole right side of the page I completely ignore. Unless I have a chat window up in gmail, and then it's only the lower right half I pay attention to.
I don't care what the ads say. If I've ignored them since beta I'll continue to do so.

Ads? I've had AdBlock+ for so long I forgot they even existed. Feels amazing, man. I recently heard a friend telling me they had to wait for a commercial on YouTube before the video started. I was in shock that this had actually been going on for a long time. Imagine all the time he will not have wasted in 5 years from now because he now has the add-on as well.

You know what? Yeah, sure, almost no one likes ads, and almost no matter how relevant they are. But if they help keep Gmail free, then I don't really care. With this, they're just trying to help keep us more happy with relevant ads, and them being able to keep giving their service for free. And the ads aren't even in-your-face or anything at all, unlike other free providers. You even get 7.5GB of free e-mail storage. All free. All we have to do is put up with a few ads.
