Yeah its automatic, you have to be in front of the net. The higher the players deflection skill the higher the chance of the deflection being successful

We all have our opinions, but Cliff Fletcher, the smart man he is, didn't take Mayers for his goal scoring ability, he took him for his grit and toughness. He's had many fights this year which he won at least 90% of them, and he's a great leader, and that's why he wears an 'A' on his jersey. The same goes for Brad May. When he was younger like Mayers, he put the puck in the net a lot more frequently. But now as they're older, they're for leadership and toughness.

deflections are automatic based on angles, deflection rating, etc. pressing L2 doesnt guarantee a deflection standing near the goalies shoulders seems to be the easiest way.
