I'm kind of getting there... so it is actually possible. Before trying to ad the thinner strings make sure you feel entirely comfortable about the bass pattern as Tommy says. That what has done the trick for me
goes way back, Travis picking, Mississippi John Hurt, Elizabeth Cotton, once you get the independence comes it all falls together and you DON'T NEED a thumb pick to do this, don't think about it is difficult when too much 'mind' is put in...he's showing a MUCH more difficult version than alternate picking as he's doing this with three stings and through chord changes...I would suggest start with John Hurt and work UP to this...to me he's showing a more complex version of alternate picking
The problem is when the melody and the bass line are rhytmicaly apart... you don't have 2 brains. Apart, I mean, the melody plays a tripplet for instance and then a 1/2 pause then 1/2 (weak time)... that's when this stuff becomes difficult. You really should be playing that bass line WITHOUT even thinking about it. And that's the problem IMO...
@usalespaul59 That's not a problem. That's a challenge, and it's incredibly fun and rewarding to work at it! How is it a problem if it ends up sounding amazin? Indeed, it isn't :)
@Demoras By "problem" I mean that it is not easy to play, not that it sounds bad. And if you are so smart, show us some of that boom chick magic yourself...
@usalespaul59 What the hell, man. You totally misinterpreted my comment. Where did I say that it sounds bad? Nowhere! Where did I say I was a smart-ass? Nowhere! @_@
I'm saying that if you approach it as a problem rather than a fun challenge you usually end up not liking the process of learning it at all. Look at it positively ("I'm becoming better!") instead of negatively ("I still suck!").
Yes, I can "boom-chick", but I'm not nearly as good as Tommy, obviously. I'm not here to boast >_>
i think this is a bad way to learn it you should learn the chords then wright out a tab yourself showing where exactly the base and melody occur and just follow it really slowly its so much quicker learning it that way i tried 2 months trying to do tommys lesson on here and didnt get anywhere but within a month of this way i learnt it
@guitarreilly and thats why you will never play this stuff naturally! i used to think like you and now i have to relearn this stuff because i did it via tabs and slowly doing it! now ive gone back and am doing this and can now jam out stuff in this style by starting a bass line and adding melody lines
@ox0Jason0xo what are you talking about you havnt even heard me play and why are you re learning it if you can do it already?! and yes i can make up a bass line and a melody its so easy once you know how all you do is hold a chord and the melody is usually within the outline of the chord and then you apply boom chick style
@ox0Jason0xo yep why was this a fail can you not think of anything better to say im just gonna say mt point again once you learn the song really slowly you kinda stumble upon the style and are suddenly just randomly able to do it in any position so please be quiet
This is a big help & it teaches you discipline !! Thanx for the post !! You can also do this without a thumb pick, with just thumb & fingers !! A thumb pick is cool but seems to get in the way sometimes cause you can't FEEL the strings !! But I think to do it both ways is best !! Even CHET had to practice this stuff a million times to get there but it is well worth the effort !! You CAN DO THIS ,don't give up !! PEACE
I've been practicing 'that' for the last six months!.. At first I though he was joking... A week seemed like a long time to just do something that simple and I though he was joking. When I realized that he wasn't joking I then realized how much it takes to be a great player.
Lol, I can't understand this: I had no problems learning this, as a matter of fact, I got it in less than a minute. But I can't learn the chord progression for Freight Train XD I fail :P
He doesn't mention, but he demonstrates...the position of the thumb pick (behind the nail), and the way he makes his bass and rhythm strokes. Bass appears to be slanted outward from the beginning of the attack to clear the next lower string naturally (not resting on the lower string after he makes his stroke). The rhythm stroke looks like a "scoop," which starts going straight down, hitting the 4th and 3th string, then scooping to avoid the 2nd. Any other observations out there?
sounds like a transposition with embellishments of E B A... i think...please dont answer offensively, thats hardly the point of my post, we're here to learn...peace
The thumb pick is used mainly in order to get a specific type of sound - it doesn't have much to do with speed. There are people who don't use it at all - or use hybrid picking instead (like Tommy does from time to time), and can still play at pretty fast tempos.

Do note that @3:27 the video is not synched to the sound.
The first note of the F measure is played on the bottom string and not the D string (as is shown). The same applies to the G measure.
