Definitely a top 5 drumline in DCI history. Even with virtually no book. I love the leftover concert band segment at the very end of the tape. Viva la VHS!
Man talk about working hard but also having an experienced staff. I was in Suncoast Sound that summer and from Florida so we were fine ( " used to ' 0 the heat down south but Star.. They would be rehearsing at 12 midnight when we were finally pulling into town passing some of their housing sites. I think they slept in or did other body/stretching stuff indoors during the hottest part of the day while in Florida anyway and made their schedule work . That's smart
I marched with Phantom Regiment in 93 and we saw Star regularly throughout the tour. The show was certainly ahead of it's time and was VERY VERY clean. Hornline was great as well. But either way, it wasn't all that exciting (but I was biased ;). Still you have to respect the effort that goes into EVERY DCI show. Regardless of who had a higher score, lots of sweat is left out there.
I'm sure that Star is a result of great talent, great instruction, and a true meaning of the word drum corps. I spoke with the lead tenor player from this corp, he judged a competition in wash st. He basically said they all worked incredibly hard on what they acheived. That's really what it takes. So for anyone who's about to give up...DON'T!!!
Star was the heat, period. They did it RIGHT. Paid their staff well (there is NO honor in teaching drum corps and being broke), and treated their kids well. People that came to Star from other corps did so to march under the EXCELLENT staff they hired. They were successful 'cause they were smart enough to hire experienced staff, rather than hiring age-outs from their own ranks. Star was created to be excellent, not just win. I'd rather have marched at Star then Cadets ANY DAY. And I won.
actually yes. that is how they did it.... just without giving money to kids marching. they bribed (offered more money) to the best instructors. then scouted out kids in other corps. they didn't just hold auditions and in one year they are one of the best. thats insane. it takes MANY years to build a great corps.
you cant buy sweat and effort. but you can entice the ones who find it easier.
LOL...they didn't scout kids from other corps. Hell, there were about 5 or 6 corps that had more talent than we did the 2 years I marched Star. Heck, my highschool region band in Texas had more talent than our hornline. Where do some of you people come up with this crap?
To answer your question of where this was filmed it was at preview of Champions in Ypsilanti MI.
I see you've got a copy of one of my tapes. I uploaded all my drumcorps videos about 3 months ago about 180 in total to YouTube. Mark Underwood taped the first segment till he had to go pee and I taped the last part using my parents old VHS camcorder. Mark, Eric Eves and myself had a long day of recording and this was the last Corps that's why it was so shaky.
It was only controversial because the powers that "had been" in DCI at that time, did not understand it. They feared it because they did not understand it.
This is a very, very weak reaction in my opinion, as an organization that supposedly bases itself on innovation, artistry, technical perfection, and musicality, completely misunderstood this show.
However, many corps members from many different corps did not misunderstand this show, even at the time it was occurring.
definately their best show, despite its wierd-ness. why the hell did they quit doing drum corps after that year? They finished 2nd in 1993 and then, they disappeared. What happened?
wow. that shows no class at all. now I'm glad they left if all they did was get pissed off if they don't win. In DCI, the fact that you got second doesn't mean you're chopped liver. The fans love watching all the shows no matter what they place. Look at Phantom Regiment. 2nd and 3rd place finishes out the wazzu, and yet, they're still here. They never cry and run away from DCI like Star did. If you ask me, they deserved 2nd in 1993 and all of their prevous placements before leaving DCI.
Sorry dude but you've got it all wrong. Sorry to sound harsh but it seems that this myth will never die. Star decided to leave competition in June of '93 to tour with the Canadian Brass. If we had won, we would've left anyways. The show was called Brass Theater and eventually became a Broadway show called Blast. Here's Bill Cook's explanation if you want more details...google Star of Indiana and click history and then click recollections. Read chapters 6 and 7 in particular
Thanks. Now I know the truth! I just based what I said on things that were said on google video and other chat-rooms. Go to google video and look up 1993 Star of Indiana and look at the comments. You'll see where I came from. Sorry about the incorrect info.
damn they were so clean

probably the cleanest drumline in DCI history! amazing stuff. look for the entire show on Google Video. very controversial, but awesome!!!

And now, 16 years later, everyone acknowledges the sheer brilliance of Star 1993.

After the controversy of their show in '93, they decided it was best for them to move on.
Basically all the higher ups got super pissed that they didn't win the championship that year when everyone knew they should have.

you cant compare the regiment (a history corps) vs star (a corps created to just win a championship).
