The " Tunnel of Love" in Asbury Park , circa 1930's by the boardwalk ,lost it's fight for preservation and was torn down. Used to remind me of this great song every time I drove by it. Most likely the inspiration for it, as Bruce incorporates many local themes into his songs.

That's exactly right. Perfect description. I first heard this song when it came out. I was 4 years old and have loved it ever since. It's underrated but should not be because it has a touch of everything Springsteen has to offer. I was at the St. Paul show recently and was hoping he would play it. He didn't, nor did I believe he would - his wife wasn't at the concert for some reason.
