@bruno1210yo Clicker marks the behaviour. It tells the cat that they have done the correct behaviour and will get a reward for it. First you have to charge the clicker by clicking once and then giving a treat. You have to do this for about 15-20 times or until the cat gets the meaning of clicker. Once you know the cat will look up at you everytime she hears a click, that's when you can start using clicker to mark good behaviours.
@Johnlly123 she is clicker training the cat like you would with a dog so they know when they done whats expected so you no longer need the target stick
Good, but it would be better to train the cat to do it even when it can't see the trick. The woman in the video was holding the treat basically right in front of the cat's nose, so of course it would jump. If you do that, the cat doesn't really know the trick. A cat really knows a trick if it does it on command, even when it can't see the treat you're holding ready to give it
Wow, that cat is amazing. It's weird i spend nearly everyday with my cat with a stick and all she does is chew. Oh and is there a way you can train your cats tricks without any objects or chewiness or stuff? PL Z Answer.
Wow, that cat is amazing. It's weird i spend nearly everyday with my cat with a stick and all she does is chew. OIh and is there a way you can train your cats tricks without any objects or chewies or stuff? PLZ Answer.
@stripesmommy the clicker is supposed to signify that the cat accomplished the task that it was set out to do. You don't need a clicker in order to teach the cat to do tricks, but it's good to use instead of treats, however, you're SUPPOSED to clicker train the cat first so that it learns to associate the noise with receiving food, and that way, you won't have to give your cat a treat every time because the click literally becomes the reward. I don't know if that makes sense.
@AnimalFreak111 it's for conditioning the cat - once the cat associates the click with the treat, a click will also work as positive reinforcement when the cat gets the trick right, without having to treat it all the time with sweets etc.
rigth...so basically ....teach your cat to jump from one chair to another by tempting it with a treat.....put a ring in the middle (which the cats probably gives a damn abt), and do it again. I think my cat was born with this ability!!
Oh, by the way, my first two comments, the lowest ones down, were directed as replies at reindeer1489 but they came out as regular comments for some reason.
You are a very good trainer! :D I also train my cats, but you are better than me! My kittens are also very fast learners - they learnt to jump through a hoop 2ft in the air in one day! My cats, however, love their training, and jumping is their favouirte game. I highly recommend Burmese as they have a very long attention span, are very loyal, always try their best, and are generally very agile and muscular cats.

Well, that was offensive. He's an Egyptian Mau. I get to be his favorite person whether I like it or not. Even so, cats are not into pleasing their human companions, that's the point I was trying to make. It's only fun if they get food, or any other kind of self-indulging reward from it. Part of why I like cats so much. No bullshit with them.
I agree with SRNF that it might be a bond thing. Cats are similar to any other animal in that they're very interested in pleasing humans so long as they're treated well by humans. However, they're different because they're not pack animals and they behave in a more solitary manner. They also have a much shorter attention span for that sort of thing.
Spike can learn tricks, he learns them incredibly fast and has a knack for it. But if his choices are A) do tricks for a while or B) run around the house and play tag with me, he almost always chooses the B option. Training is boring for him, no matter how enthusiastic I am. If I had the space and equipment, I'd teach him something involving running and jumping. Sit, stay, and all those basic dog tricks aren't up to his brain power.
That's only half of it. Animals are much more interested in pleasing their humans than we think they are, cats included. If you begin teaching animals tricks you'll find that it's much simpler than most people suspect. Most of the time even the most complex-looking tricks are just a simple matter of getting an animal to follow food.
I think this is Spike's personality alone, but, he's doesn't really try hard to please me. I get treated like a litter mate/sibling. I get chewed on, scratched, tackled (don't let the fact that is below the average size for a domestic cat fool you. He can jump over my head), and sought out for constant play related attention all the time. Like you said before, cats tend to have short attention spans, especially if they are spotted breeds (Egyptian Maus, Bengals, Savannah's, etc...)
Cats are as easy to train as dogs! My mother always taught all our cats to roll over. I also have taught our cats to roll over. After about 2 years of not rolling over one of our cats remembered how to do it! I was shocked. Cats are a lot smarter than people give them credit!
To phase out the treat you slowly start to only reward every other time and then only every so often. Even if you didn't give them a treat the last time they did it, They know that there is a possibility of you giving a treat the next time you ask for a behavior and so they keep trying. This is know as "the gamble" in food based training. If the animal stops responding every time, there is nothing wrong with giving a treat to refresh their memory and get them to start gambling all over again.
The clicker is given meaning by clicking & treating over & over. It's like saying "good boy!" only it's a neutral sound, that can be consistently repeated & 1 they don't hear everyday. it knows it will get a treat when you click & quickly links what it was doing the moment you clicked with getting the treat the click promises. This leads him to repeat the behavior. Once they grasp this they try very hard to get you 2 click. Add a command word phase out the "tools" & you've got your trick!
training your cat is an awesome way to bond with your cat, but i personally don't like using a target stick, i use my hand a lot.... i just feel like it more loving that way, and i feel your almost belittling a cat with a stick... how about i get a target stick and put freeze dried donuts on it and tell you where to go....
Training cats is so rewarding. It's great having a pet, but being able to do activities with them like this makes the experience so much more enjoyable. Check out my videos, there's a whole training course available for novices.

Not impressive. Dogs are much better since they can do loads of awesome tricks as well as work many important jobs (like sniffing out drugs and bombs, finding lost children in the wilderness, pulling people out of avalanches and collapsed buildings, guarding property and people, et.). Also cats don't really love you, they just want to utilize you as a human resource. A dog will normally be willing to die for its master.
I'd say it's a matter of opinion... You say cats don't really love you, i say that dogs are too stupid to act on their own. They just follow their masters, like stupid little minions. Actually, that's not exactly what i think, because i don't hate certain animaals like you.
Actually what I said about dogs doing useful jobs and cats not, is not a matter of opinion. And I never said I "hated" cats, I'm just not a fan and would never keep them myself.
Ok, I agree that dogs can do some more usefull things than cats. But you can't say that dogs are "better". Some people like dogs more, some people like cats more. And cats DO love you, if you treat them the right way. Cats are very social animals. It has been proofed (typo?).
I think cats do love humans. A while back there was a fire nearby and a baby was trapped inside. The cat ran back inside and came out carrying the baby. It then collapsed and later died (the cat that is, the baby survived). When I cry my cats lick the tears from my face. They keep me company and I truly KNOW that they love me just as I love them.
Dude, Cats do not do tricks! They aren't dogs, they are not ment to serve us, as they are free willed. If you were a cat who had to do a trick, wouldn't it be humiliating?
My cats will willingly jump through a hoop 2ft up in the air. If I leave it up after training, the leap through it anyway! They love their jumping tricks!

Cats can do one important job, They can keep mice out of a house, and mice carry many nasty things and ruin food stock. I call that a useful job.

Cat's are funny at times because, they are uncontrollable. It is good that fun tricks can challenge and bond with your lovable cats.
