I think the drama that surrounded them at the time certainly helped catapault their music and legacy. It probably wouldve gotten there regardless, but from a different perspective. people saw this serious new form of music emerging and all the death and violence that came along with it. The general public eats up violence, so of course it projected them further than they would have done without all the craziness. IMHO anyway!
