Good review and a very peculiar film. I wondered what the some of the symobolism meant. There was a reference to zodiac type constellations. The 3 beggars (fox, crow & deer) which Defoe realised are not constellations, but real. Astrotheology perhaps? Where its believed that the sun is "the son". The figurative death of the sun (son). The fall of winter. Only the son was called Nic, might be a reference to the Devil (Old Nick).
Excellent review, man. The movie stays with me. Metaphorically confusing for me (too many to "over" analyze) and you helped me. I wondered if there would ever be a good psychological horror firm - well, this movie is it. Like all his movies - Breaking the Waves, Dogville, Manderlay, Dancer in the Dark, Melancholia - they all leave me thinking, & thinking for some time This director is genious in having his movies "stick with you" - like having something stuck in your shoe, or eye.

@Jeorney Thank you, and very well spotted. The film really is alive with symbolism.

Loved the film personally, and a great review (especially after some of the narrow minded reviews that viewed this film as nothing but gore)

@moviedude1500 Thanks, it's used in the opening scene of the film. One of my favorite pieces of music.

@moviedude1500 'Lascia ch'io pianga', from the opera 'Rinaldo' by Handel. One of my favourites too.
