By my previous comment, i meant both gilmour and syd singing. What a duo. Personally I like Gilmour more than Waters anyway. Waters lyrics are almost too depressing and ego-centric (the wall was more or less about him, and the final cut was solely focused on his dad), even though Animals was brilliant... but here I go, rambling about pink floyd more and more. Syd Rocks.
Syd's vocal abilities are clearly demonstrated here in the lyric "Why can't you see?" which uses that screaming technique made so famous by the likes of countless after him such as Scott Weiland and Layne Staley along with the rest of the "grunge" movement such as Kurt Cobain plus inumerable British bands like Blur and countless others. My god, even the heavily touted "punk rock" movement (Sex Pistols) owed quite a bit to Syd's Floyd. And all the while his response was a resounding; Nothing.
@TheBoss351Mustang Nah, dude, DSOTM is nothing compared to other possibilities we can list here... Imagine Barrett working on ATOM HEART MOTHER. Can you picture Syd working on "More Soundtrack"? Imagine what would be Syd playing with Pink Floyd on LIVE AT POMPEII. He'd probably have a mental breakdown while recording it, too much acid.
On the other side, would we ever see "The Wall", "Animals" and "Wish You Were Here" if Syd was still in the band? Probably not.
@TheBoss351Mustang DSOTM would've been worse. I know I'm going to get a ton of crash about this, but just listen. Syd and Roger always disagreed. DSOTM was Roger's idea (mostly), and Syd would've changed it or said no, and then that would also make all their other albums worse. Or, maybe I'm thinking the opposite and Syd would change everything for the better. Maybe he would've improved DSOTM and the others.
... david would've have been able to integrate the band and even if that had happened, syd would still have been in command of the themes and lyrics of the songs not roger xD
@TheBoss351Mustang I applaud the thought but DSOTM would never have been if Syd had made it passed the 60's. Gilmour would never have made it into Pink Floyd, there would have been no need for him. The material that Pink Floyd did put out is largely based on Syd. DSOTM, WYWH, The Wall, all largely in part based on Syd, Wish You Were Here is pretty much their homage to their lost leader. So in a way you could say that he had everything to do with post-Barrett Floyd. It's his continuing gift.
@TheBoss351Mustang Barrett and Gilmour together would never have worked. What happened to Syd was tragic, and I love his music, but ultimately the Waters/Gilmour/Wright/Mason era was far better.
@patrikrush its about a real person. its not invented. Syd and Roger were studying at the university. And in the Girls Campus, there was a boy/man who stole the girls underwear from the washing line. Syd loved this story and wrote a song about the misterious boy/man whos called "arnold layne".
I hope you understand me... I know my english is awfull :S :)
@HippieR0ck Dude, your english was nealy perfect. Good job. :) Foreign languages are tough... I'm learning french right now and my french is TERRIBLE. Oh well.
Arnold Layne's only a character they invented. If I understand the lyrics, it's a song about a guy who collects women's clothes after sleeping with them, something like that.
@Twilightprince10 One of the greatest in my opinion. This song kicks ass but my favorite psychadelic rock song is Interstellar Overdrive by none other than the Floyd in the Piper at the Gates of Dawn.

DSOTM would have never happened if Syd had stayed around, which probably would be for the best, as Piper is one of the best Psych albums of all time.

maybe most UNappreciated PF album
I love Syd as much as anyone but Floyd history is such as it is, and I wouldn't want too see it change

@HippieR0ck You said it. That's exactly what inspired Syd to write this song. See Emily Play is also believed to be based on a real person.
