I can understand your point, but these engines are well known for their longevity. Keep in mind, a lot of these are used in dairies etc where the dust is much less. It's hard to argue with the results - these go for decades and are highly regarded and sought after.
I dunno why but the lack of covering for the valves / valve train / air filtering etc still amazes me the people were dumb enough to do it - even when the principles of grinding paste - a mixture of dust and grits in oil or water - had been understood for thousands of years,
@MusicMan20061210 unfortunately, heavy mass = inefficiency. :( don't get me wrong though; i, too, like heavy machinery. it seems as if it would last more than a life time (if being taken care of correctly), unlike todays' chinese junk. :\
@leonscorpio19 I know where there are a few that might be for sale, but would need to be rebuilt/restored. They would have to be shipped from ND so nothing about the whole experience would be cheap. But they are real Listers.
I disagree. For stationary applications such as generating electricity or pumping water, heavy mass and low RPM = longevity. These things run 24/7 with excellent fuel economy. The equivalent low mass gas Briggs & Straten is very noisy and wears out after a few hundred hours of use.

Could it be that they are a too good product to be made available to the public?
These engines (the Brittish made) can last a person's lifetime.
Instead, complicated junk lightweight designs are offered with no heavy flywheels.
The heavy mass is what makes this what it is.
